Is the PlayStation 3 on its prime?

Gaming platforms still in their prime:
- Xbox 360 - Hit its prime when Modern Warfare came out
- PlayStation 3 - Hit its prime when Uncharted 2 came out
- iOS

That's about it.

I'd say 360 got its system seller with Gears of War. At the time it was the best looking game ever, even besting PCs.

I still only buy just PS3 exclusives for the system. The 360 is still my console of choice for multiplat games, not to mention XBL type content.

For some reason, MOST PS3 exclusives just didn't hit home with me. They are missing something I can't put my finger on. The best PS3 exclusive to this day for me was UC2.

I feel the exact same way. Like you, I only actually like a few exclusives. Uncharted, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Ratchet and Clank come to mind.

I look at the other PS3 exclusives, and the best emotion I can muster is that of indifference.

Killzone? Meh. Resistance? Bleh. God of War? Ok, but shallow. LBP? Boring. MGS4? Lost its way. Infamous? Just as boring as Assassin's Creed 1 was. I could go on, but you get the point.

But yea, PS exclusives really feel like they're missing something to me this gen. I just hope Twisted Metal is able to capture the feeling of the original games.

It's gloating time! My console is justified!

Lost billions, but it's all good.

Hey, atleast I tried to add something to the discussion about sales. This much backlash is kind of weird.

Your first post in the thread has dick all to do with sales discussion.

No weird backlash, you are maybe sore about having your obvious attempts at thread derailment pointed out.

Quit while you are ahead.

Next year is looking pretty good as well btw.

Twisted Metal, Starhawk, TLG, the new sly cooper from the first party studios.

And a slew of 3rd party exclusives like Nino Kuni, Tales of Graces, and possibly Final Fantasy vs.

I'd say next year is worth looking stellar as well. So the system is definitely not yet past its prime. Definitely the strongest library amongst the 3 current systems, that is not even up for debate, I'd say..

Oh really? I'm the "cop-out"?

There are a ton of great games for the PS3.

"B-b-but it lost BILLIONS in its first few years!"

Who gives a shit.

You totally went about that the wrong way, and I was almost going to side with you too.

Sure the idea of their financial losses doesn't 100% comply with the topic, its about the company over all. But to not give a shit means you're ignoring the fact that if Sony continues to lose money year after year, you might not get another PlayStation down the line, and that matters.

At the very least be civil about it, and just calmly state that you "solely wanted to talk about the pure gaming aspect of its current rise in the market share" instead of "Who the fuck cares".

It will hit its apex with The Last Guardian. I have been waiting for that game since I got my PS3. This shit's getting more ridiculous than GT5 at this point, only this game probably won't be a disappointing mess. *runs and hides*

Starhawk is the one title so far that is definite for me, can't wait.

Killzone 2 was a revelation in graphics when it released, and the campaign had a pretty good war-story, sadly they did the MW2 route with Killzone 3 and added Michael Bay sequences and story. Resistance 2 had some of the best coop potential ever, however it felt rushed and sadly they abandoned it for the sequel. Motorstorm: Pacific Rift was a great competitive racer, sadly the sequel had to include perks and loadouts just to attract the CoD crowd(which it obviously didn't).

God of War 1 and 2 was fantastic as PS2 games, some of the best ever, but after Assassin's Creed, God of War 3 with it PS2-like platforming felt a little underwhelming. Combat is still top notch for a western game though, easily beats its western competition.

Infamous, I agree. Boring game, and can't hold a candle to JC2, RDR or AC2/ACB.

And MGS4... just nanomachines.

With Journey and Last Guardian Sony has my two most anticipated upcoming titles in the bag.
Starhawk and Twisted Metal aren't really my thing, but at least it shows Sony are still trying to appeal to enthusiast gamers with the PS3.

MS have done a great job this gen, no doubt, but for the biggest software company in the world they really have been slacking when it comes to first party offerings. Now with Kinect being such a huge focus and rumours of a next-gen platform circulating they seem to be content with sitting on their momentum and coasting along on the strength of what third-parties bring to the table.

I honestly think MS have gotten awfully complacent, whereas Sony for all their many fuckups this generation appear to be trying harder than ever to appeal to my tastes.

Next year Nintendo throws their hat in the HD ring so who knows how the status quo will shift, maybe only a little, maybe a lot. But either way many multi-platform games are going to be getting an extra sku, meaning that platform exclusive content is going to be more than ever an important differentiator.

Actually, the PS3 Sony-developed exclusives don't really hit home for me too except for Heavy Rain *ducks* and Team Ico Collection. Uncharted 2 is nice. Looking forward to TLG.

Most of the games that I want are either multiplatform (FFXIII-2, SH Collection, RE:Chronicles, PSN games) or 3rd party exclusives (FFX HD, Ni no Kuni, Tales of Graces ƒ if that counts).

I would love to know what the ratio of Nintendo consoles of a 0 (or in Japan 1) game owner rate is, as I believe there is a good chunk of Wii's out there just with Wii Sports and being forgotten.

I bet you that the numbers between PS3, 360 and WII owners that are actually buying games is much closer.

Ha, I'm trolling just because I said something that is fact. Dunno, these discussion happen in other threads fine without somebody called a troll. Dunno why people are so up arm on this, seems people are making my statement something bigger and "they do give a shit".

you're trolling because you didn't bother to address the OT and trolled the system on the basis of $. similary, idiots like yourself could run into every x360 thread and troll its success on the basis that it had a 1 billion RROD fund.

I think UC3 is the high water mark but I don't know what else other than *last guardian that I will play on it. visually, the ps3 has some of the strongest console titles so I'd agree. 2012 might be its last year. I tend to buy exclusives anyhow for it.

No matter what happens in this "race" now, nothing will change but I don't think anyone can say that the PS3 haven't had a major turnaround since its launch. I think its prime will come once it's 199 though.

Yet nobody bats a eyelash when that happens. I'm sorry, but people are making this a bigger deal then it actually is.

To be fair, I think the PS3 is doing fantastic. It has a fantastic library, great value and has a steller lineup for 2012.

I hate to feel like this since I've been a supporter of the PS3 for a long time, but the fact that I and it seems so many others were either bored by (or lost interest in quickly) Killzone 3, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3, LBP2, and Resistance 3 I think is a sign that it has gone past its prime. However I think this applies to all the consoles.

I feel exactly the same way about most 360 exclusives. The only 2 exclusives I could bring myself to finish were Halo Reach and Alan Wake.

I don't think the ps3 has hit it's prime yet, do to the fact that it hasn't hit a mass market price yet. When black friday rolls around, and the 199$ ps3 deals hit the market, then we might see. There is still potential in the ps3 for another couple years of fresh games, more so than even the 360, and studios are still finding ways to tap that power.

We've still got Sly Cooper, Starhawk, The Last Guardian, Twisted Metal, and likely other surprises to go. It's not over yet ^_^

I absolutely think its in its prime. I think the system might have more surprises in store for us. I mean The Last Guardian will be amazing, FFvs13 is the FF that everybody wants, and an old school classic like Twisted Metal right around the corner. As a gamer I only look at the games to judge a system. Sony hands down has the best exclusives out of the big 3. Games like Heavy Rain, GoW3, the Uncharted series, Killzone, Resistance, Infamous, LBP. These games were some of the very best experiences I've ever had playing video games. They might not sell as much as the other guys but these are top tier, high quality games that you simply cannot get on other platforms. I love that the PS3 has always been about the games and pushing the limits of the gaming experience. I think the PS3, when this gen is over, will be remembered as the best.

It's only a matter of time before the PS3 took it's glorious 1st place in the HD Console Market (yeah lol Wii can't be beat, but its not HD! :P)

You're making this sound way more important that it actually is.

Anyway, I'm glad the PS3 had a decent turn-around. Despite it's laughably bad start, it ended up becoming a pretty awesome console in the end. Not really something I'm going to celebrate or brag about though.

studios are still finding ways to tap that power.

actually with the news that studios are now moving into next gen developement; I think GTAV is the last real big hurrah and then next gen, No more tapping the power of the current consoles - I'd say they're pretty maxed out.

I'm really excited for next year, moreso than this year or any other year for that matter. Lots of Japanese titles coming up, most of it being locked in for localization and system exclusive.

I just love the fact that Sony makes games like LittleBigPlanet 2, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal, God of War, The Last Guardian, etc. They're so different from the shooter saturation and it's unfortunate that Microsoft doesn't have many high-quality games that dabble in genres like that.

Add me to the group where exclusives don't really do much for me. I acknowledge they are good games on the system but the only ones I really had a lot of fun with was inFamous 1 and Hot Shots Golf. Exclusives have never really mattered to me and I own a single Blu-ray movie I bought 2 years ago.

I mostly just play multiplatform games online and all my friends don't play online with the PS3 so that means I play less on the system. I would say from a peaking opinion that the system peaked with UC2.

I'd say it is. Especially when it seems Microsoft has thrown in the towel in terms of getting quality unique exclusives onto their system. Meanwhile Sony has been pumping out high quality AAA titles en mass for years.

Just a thought: have you tried InFAMOUS 2? I'd say it's better than 1 in a lot of aspects.

Ehh, it's declining each month in sales even with a $50 price drop recently. Maybe it's relatively catching up to other systems, but I don't know if I would call declining slower than your competitors financially a prime.

I'm responding to that stuff since that's mostly what the OP is about.

That's just in the US though. In Europe and Japan, it's killing the 360.

It's doing pretty decently in the US too, not as bad as people make it out to be. It's got Japan in lock, but Europe is still a wildcard. It's still better in Europe then the 360.

I agree, but mostly because the 360 has a shit library of exclusives. Also, if you exclude their racing games (forza and pgr come to mind), most of of their "exclusives" are also on the PC, and I've played a good majority of those games on the PC instead.

Nearly everything is multiplatform nowadays. I really miss the console exclusivity days of the PS1/N64 era and to some extent the PS2/GC/XBOX era. It's not that I hate multiplatform, but it really felt like games were better when they were designed for one platform.

Such a shame too, since they have Rare in their pockets. Such a missed opportunity.
