Is the PlayStation 3 on its prime?

It's the year that Playstation 3 users haven't regretted their purchase for sure. ... I joke !!

I still want Persona 5 though and we are nearing the end of the generation :(, I guess P4 didn't come til late though.

We will probably be playing Persona 5 when the new consoles are out.

This year I bought:

LBP2
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Infamous 2
Resistance 3
Killzone 3
Ratchet and Clank All4One
Uncharted 3
Ico/SotC
Heroes on the Move (worth the $10)
Everybody Dance

That is a pretty dense year of just exclusives, there are a few others I might get before 2012. If I had my 360 still the only game I could see having bought was Gears 3. So ya, 2011 was a great year for PS3 owners.

It's a great system, though I purchased it last I think it's right behind the 360 in terms of quality.

Why? The PS3 is the undisputed tech titan and if it had carried this generation the same way the PS2 had we would see longer, better games probably. But it moved too slow, too late and never got the opportunity to truly live up to the hype.

The Motorstorm and Killzone target renders were so far above what ocurred, even in the later Uncharted games, and the fact many assumed exclusives bled away really impacted the view of the system.

I am saddened that such a great piece of tech, with free online was defeated by the Wii and to a certain extent the 360 in profitability. Despite being great for the customer I don't think you'll see anything like it ever again.

I definitely think it's a great time to buy a ps3. I did yesterday and I'm looking forward to playing everything I missed as a 360 only user. Just finished Killzone 3's campaign and loved it.

There are plenty of games, first and third party, that run great on the system. The "PS3 is too hard to program around" excuse died awhile ago.

It's true, but there is surely a reason why 9/10 multi platform titles perform worse on PS3. It's so common that the "lazy developers" theory isn't really going to fly.

This is pretty insane. I would also say all of those game delivered, except for KZ3. I dont think its possible that 2012 will match, and I dont we will get such a good year until next gen.

Lately most multiplats have had negligible differences.

Very few MP games in 2011 under performed. The year of MLAA, but I just buy the PC versions if I have any doubt.

Its felt like any other year to me. I got 3 games for it released in 2011 an one that was released last year. 3 PS3 games a year has been my average for this system so I'm not feeling like its in its prime for me.

I would say some of those did not deliver, the Motorstorm, Killzone and Ratchet games rating poorly compared to their predecessors. Seems to me the PS3 peaked around two years ago in terms of quality of the exclusives, KZ2, UC2, Demon's Souls, Flower, A Crack in Time. Some great games around that time.

Lately most multiplats have had negligible differences.

The differences are mostly pretty minor these days, but still almost always fall in favour of the 360. And titles are still being released with rather noticeable differences.

It's not a deal breaker, but it is something that has been rather disappointing about the PS3 in general.

Coming with bonuses ala Dead Space more than makes up for it though!

I think we all knew that the PS3 was going to pass the 360 eventually but I am glad that all of these consoles are doing well. The worst is going to be all those fuckin PR and news stories that come out when the PS3 does pass the 360. Fuel for the fanboys, shit's annoying. I still wish I liked Sony's first party games. I just can't get it up for the vast majority of them.

Threads like these make me sad. It's looking like Next gen is beckoning real soon and FINALLY in 2011 developers are now capable and have the hardware knowledge to make games at a steady constant rate rather than 3-4 year dev cycle of the first generation games. I pray that the current consoles continue being supported for the next 3 to 4 years because I feel a lot of good things can come from dev studios now especially with the PSN/XBLA community. If everyone jumps to the next gen hardware next year, we'll be back to grotesquely long development cycles and the unavoidable "PS4 has no games" meme that will surely arrive.

And I highly doubt TLG is a 2012 title. Looks more like something around mid-late 2013 or even 2014.

2014 is just crazy. That's impossible.

Actually I'm real happy about the PS3 for the first time since the generation began.

It feels like it came into its own, and in my opinion, only last year did it actually get an identity of its own. At least for me. Now I play it almost as much as the 360, but more than the Wii.

Maybe for you, but not for me. I bought the system hoping it would be just like the PS2 and MGS4 basically sold me that image. MGS4 was a disappointment and since then Valkyria Chronicles has really been the only exclusive that I really would not have wanted to miss. I really didn't get the jrpgs or quirky games that I loved on the PS2. I guess it is in it's prime, because it has tons of exclusives and at a steady rate and they all are seemingly quality. For me I guess it's mostly Uncharted, but at the end of the day I really wouldn't have missed it if I only had an Xbox.

But then you have that 1 out of 10 that runs better on ps3 not to mention games like uncharted 3 gow 3 that look better than 360 exclusives showing that when the machine is used well it can match and at times better 360. Its more down to how much devs are willing to spend to get ps3 running as well and how well the engine fits on the console without major changes.
