God I love that scene. Just embracing the absolute cheese of it all made it so much fun. Especially the editing.
I don't hate DmC's writing, but it never achieved what this scene did; which was to be fun and entertaining.
Mustachio Dante aside that is.

I guess they wanted to maintain their image after Enslaved (which had a good story and told it quite well), so they wanted to ensure people "DmC will mirror our past work!"

Seriously though, that dialogue is good from a technical point of view. It's extremely cheesy and over the top, but the way the lines are delivered and the animation pair very well - it's not "bad" - it achieves exactly what it sets out to do. The voice acting is also good, it has great timing and cadence.
There are countless games that fail these basic things. Lines delivered with the wrong word emphasized, pauses between two characters speaking, canned animations that aren't timed with the speech, etc.
It gets much worse.

I know the context, but that quote is an apt encapsulation of NT's initial arrogance about their reboot, where they publicly sharted all over the OG series while bragging about DmC's great and deep and culturally relevant story, and much cooler style.

Self-aware cheesiness is not the same as badly written dialog for a story that's meant to be serious and dramatic. Bayonetta has very bloated and flawed storytelling, but everything the title character says is gold.

I personally love DmC. Ninja Theory nailed a cohesive tone and style in every element of the game. It's over the top and stupid... and it's supposed to be. The game isn't aiming to be hard-hitting political commentary or smart comedy and it's really silly to see disillusioned fans of the previous DMC games lambaste the game on these terms. I'm not saying these fans don't have a right to be disillusioned; DmC is an entirely different product than the DMC series. But letting that get in the way of what I consider to be an extremely well-crafted game (I mean look at the environmental design!) is such a shame.

Whaaaa- how can you hate the writing in Sunset Overdrive? Sure, sometimes it's kinda cringey, but most of the times I really liked it. Just don't take it seriously, the game sure as hell doesn't. They even make fun of their own writing.

Halo 5. So much forced "LOL SO QUIRKY!" Joss Whedon tier cringe and awful melodramatic shit. That "speech" by Tanaka made me gag a little bit.
I still want a legit game, one like that, where a mariachi ends up becoming a gun-slinging demon slayer. That would be incredible. And have it be in spanish worldwide, no dubs. No dubs for anyone.

Why do you think people can't tell that it's tongue in cheek? Something can be tongue in cheek and crap at the same time. Which is exactly what "fuck you", "fuck", "bitch", "dick", "fuck", "bigger dick", "fuck you", "bitch", "raped by demons", "I am your bitch, bend me over and..." is.
The above DMC4 exchange with Agnus manages ridiculous tongue in cheek without sounding like it was written by an 11 year old who's just discovered swear words.
There's just not even the tiniest sliver of wit in DmC.
How could anyone think the scene in the OP is tongue in cheek, self-aware or witty. It is the exact opposite of those things. It's pretty clear Ninja Theory wanted New-Dante to seem 'cool' but he just comes off as an edgy teenager. The old DMC games, at least 3 and 4, were legitimately self-aware and tongue in cheek. Same goes for a game like Bayonetta. Original-Dante and Bayonetta are genuinely cool because they're allowed to be silly and over top. Their dialogue is funny and doesn't take itself too seriously. New-Dante is just an ass.

I haven't played much of DMC but Dante's voice acting and delivery makes for probably the most convincing angsty teen I've seen in a video game. And I mean that in a good way lol

The joke is that this ancient demon who had existed for thousands of years was reduced to a verbal slinging match of immensely juvenile proportions. It's a scene that's knowingly immature in a comedic sense. Whether you thought it was amusing or not is another matter, but I don't peg it as being badly written.
I thought DmC was a consistently funny game that had the good sense to (rarely) ever take itself too seriously. There are heaps upon heaps of games out there that have the dreaded combination of being both terribly written and po-faced, and anyone who can tolerate a dark soul filled with light should have little trouble sitting through DmC's cut-scenes.
Having dialogue that's not as bad as something translated or written by Capcom doesn't mean much when Ninja Theory is clearly into making cinematic games with real performances from actors.
But yes, all of the dmc games have shit dialogue.

I won't defend the older DMC games saying their story and dialogue were top notch and well written and that the older Dantes were some kind of superstar of characters. However, I do think they were at the very least funny compared to the new one who was a boring "fuck"-fest of a douchebag.
