Is this a cockroach, GAF? And should I kill myself?

Anyone have any legit info, ideas, instructions, etc.?

My wife just moved the thing outside. She is not afraid of bugs (unlike me).

1) Turn in your man card

2) When vermin show up in your house, kill them. It's gonna come back, with friends.

The cockroaches that everybody in this thread is talking about can be very harmful, especially if you have respiratory issues.

Yeah, yeah, I know, Mr. Entomologist, almost every cockroach species is harmless and not considered vermin. Those are NOT what's being discussed here.

They've also been known to crawl into people's ears as they sleep.

*shrug*

You may be right about the respiratory issues. All I know is that I grew up in Texas, where the cockroaches are big and everywhere. Never had any allergy problems, never was afraid of em, never understood why people direct such murderous rage at them.

Nobody gives a fuck about insects and fish. WELL I DO. I think cockroaches are cool and if you kill them I think you're a dick.

It's a really blurry cellphone pic, but here are the seven cockroaches that were having a dogpile in the corner of my office bathroom the other week. Your one little guy is nothing.

I'm sure it'll surprise nobody to hear this, but roaches are pretty common here in Australia. You don't see them every day, but spotting one running through your garage or whatever is totally normal.

If you see another one, call the exterminators.

Two things:

1) only 1cm? hahahah you must not live in the south east US. Talking a couple inches down here

2) Buy a big can of Bengal spray and spray everywhere around your house, in cracks and stuff and watch them flee for their life.

I've never seen a cockroach in my life. In the 18 months my wife and I have been living in this apartment, I've never seen a cockroach.

But tonight, in the pantry, there was this fucking thing, about 1cm in length:

FUCK ME. FUCK THIS.

Is this a cockroach? Is it possible that it is some other kind of bug that is less heinous?

Also, if it is a cockroach, is it possible that there will only be one?

FUCK.

PRAY TO GOD THAT IT'S NOT A GERMAN. PRAY!

You are so fucked if you have any of those.

NOTE: If german. DO NOT SPRAY! I REPEAT DO NOT SPRAY!. Spraying them gives them powers to multiply.

Their only weakness it a good boot.

In one of my apartments we had dozens...left for a weekend and set off 4-5 raid bombs which did the trick

If you are looking to keep your home/apartment free from bugs, Demon WP insecticide pretty much wipes everything away.

Had a major roach problem in my house a month ago. Put this around the house, and haven't seen a roach since.

I've never even seen a cockroach.

Do they exist in Canada?

Yes. OP is in Toronto.

That said, they are way more common in the Southern US, Mexico, etc.

I had a cockroach infestation in an apartment that I lived in once. They started showing up a month or two after I moved in. At first, I would see one once every couple of weeks, and soon it was close to every day. I ended up basically moving in with my girlfriend (now wife) to get away from them since the landlord wasn't interested in dealing with it. After a couple of months of not having any food in the place (I was at that point just using for storage), they were gone. When we officially moved in together in a new apartment a few months later, we had zero issues. I have been lucky with the 5-6 places I have had since.

I did some field work in the Peruvian Amazon about 6 years ago. There were quite a few cockroaches there as well, only they were 4 inches long and armored like tanks.

Sort of like this

I've seen these bigger ones many times (never in the house though):

Archimandrita.tesselata.CR.Limon.Kekoldi.Jan08.2692c.jpg

that looks like a colossal roach, literally it is called ''colossal roach'' but it is not the largest

one much larger than this is the giant cave cockroach
fuulqr.jpg

they can go up to 4 inches long with a 6 inch wingspan

if you want to go even larger you have the rhinoceros roach, the largest you'll find on this planet

What a baby.

I've seen cockroaches ejected from my minisplit (it got cleaned afterwards).

I used the "miracle" insect chalk once, but then I read it's dangerous for us human beings.

the truth is every apartment building, no matter how nice, has roaches. if you've seen one after a year you're probably in the clear... (but still get roach traps, gels, ect)

i actually saw a roach in my new apartment for the first time today. its been about 3 months, and i live in south texas, so by those standards i consider that good. but i dread when i have to clean out my cabinets... i'm sure there's at least two or three dead ones lying around in there... there always is...

I didn't know cockroaches could fly until one night one flew in through a window and at my face on the 19th floor of an apartment I was living in. Quite a shock I can tell you, managed to kill it though after a bit.

Roaches can survive for weeks off of a greasy finger print. So make sure your kitchen is clean as fuck. Trap them and contain them and you should be good.

It's a shame that these fuckers ended being some paragon of evolution.

My ex-girlfriend had a family of Black Widows in her house. I didn't believe her at first, but then she showed me this sticky-trap contraption which literally had seven Black Widows caught in it. I rarely went over to her place after that.

As for cockroaches, I've had problems before. Just use:
RAID, bro.

if i let some roaches loose in space and let them breed and them bring them back to earth. will they be super roaches.

OK serious answer. A few years ago, my fiancee's college apartment was infested...apartment neighbor was a slob, so nothing could be done while she was there. What we did was before moving out, treated the old apartment, and treated the new apartment. We used this stuff:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006QYU85Q/?tag=neogaf0e-20

we treated all of the floor boards and around all of the appliances, shelves, and cupboards. The way this stuff works as insects tread through it, and as they preen themselves it destroys their reproductive ability. Eventually they die out. This stuff lasts several 6 months, but with a bad infestation every 3-4 months isn't a bad idea.

Beyond that, feel free to use roach bait and/or motels. Doesn't hurt to hedge your bet. Keep everything clean and sealed.. I'll echo getting rid of cereal and the like for a while. Bastards like that stuff. You'll want to wipe stuff down with disinfectant spray on a regular basis. They poop as they walk and roach droppings carry bacteria and can aggravate respiratory problems. Roaches are a pain, but they are beatable. Also, if you continue to see the roaches, make sure you let the land lord know so that they can check with the other tenants.

That's just a baby roach, probably got separated from it's brood. They usually all ride on the mothers back, so if you hurt this one its brethren will likely come for you in your sleep - invading every orifice.

Repulsive bastards. If one is around the house I will turn everything and anything to destroy it with extreme prejudice.

Lucky you it's not. Those things usually sneak in on plants n stuff. Nothing to worry about.
Edit- never mind you're fucked.

Oh, and cats tend to enjoy hunting and eating cockroaches. And my last one's absolute favorite food was mosquito.

Great. I will not sleep tonight because my room is kind of a mess right now and I fear roaches crawling on me in my sleep.

I grew up in Louisiana. It's really fun to be sitting on the john and one flies across the room -- and lands on your leg. The 2 - 3" long variety.

Good times.

I see them every once in awhile in my home in North Carolina. Really not much to do but try and keep your place clean and set out traps.

you should be happy that it's a normal cockroach.

the ones in our area thinks they are some kind of butterfly. ugh
