Is this the year a downloadable game gets GotY?

It very well may be. I should take a look at the list of retail games from this year. The only ones that really would be in contention for me are XCOM, Sleeping Dogs, probably Dishonored and Halo 4 (haven't played either yet). Maybe I'm missing something but I don't think so.

Walking Dead will be a pretty big contender for me, and possibly for some sites as well (e.g. Giant Bomb). Journey was incredible but since it's barely a game I wouldn't give it the nod. Then there's Fez, Trials, Dust, Spelunky: all incredible games that could be argued for GOTY, though I don't think I would.

not when Kid Icarus Uprising is out. Sorry, other games

Crashmo comes out next week, so i can't give it the "best downloadable title" yet

No, this is the year Mass Effect 3 wins GoTY

:)

But we do have separate "Best Downloadable Game" categories in most awards, so y'all can decide amongst that.

If dota 2 were to be released it would be my GOTY.

F2P and no retail copies.

Not sure if you'd consider it the same way you would journey or mark of the ninja, which are both single player *focused, on consoles and cost money.

I suspect most GOTY awards will still go to big budget $60 games:

Mass Effect 3
Diablo III
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Dishonored
Borderlands 2
Guild Wars 2

And maybe New Super Mario Bros. U. I think XCOM will end up being GAF's GOTY.

I wonder if GameInformer will be giving Max Payne 3 GotY after Rockstar gave them the GTA V cover and info...

Besides Mass Effect 3 (which had giant backlash) and Xenoblade (which a lot of game reviewers didn't play), Mark of the Ninja and Journey have the best aggregate review scores of the year. Dishonored, XCOM, Halo 4, and ME3 will probably take some GotYs, but do you think mainstream sites will finally be able to give treat downloadable games equally by giving them Game of the Year? Looking at the NeoGAF media GotY threat, it looks like Bastion, Minecraft, and Desktop Tower Defense were the only downloadable games to win GotY from multiple sites ever and they only ended up with two sites giving them that honor each.

Highest aggregate scores and one of the best games of all time. GOTY. I am not biased. ;)

It's most definitely been a great year for downloadable games. Will have to dig into Journey, Tokyo Jungle and The Unfinished Swan when I find some time

I think there's a better shot for one this year than ever before. But for me, personally, a downloadable game was not my favourite of 2012.

It probably won't be a downloadable game because there have been way too many excellent ones this year - that'll split the votes and prevent any one from winning, imo.

Even with the dearth of goty-quality retail titles this year, one with a sufficiently large fanbase will probably clinch it (undeservedly).

Ugh kill me now.

Are we talking media or gaf? I know gaf has picked some real stinkers as goty before but if we go there....yuck.

I very highly doubt Black Ops II could get GotY from GAF. My guess is Halo 4 or Hitman: Absolution if it turns out to be as good as people hope it will.

You guys already discussing GotY, we haven't even played Nintendoland yet!

gaf goty has been pretty good as long as we forget The Great Shame Of 2008™

Journey stands head and shoulders above every other downloadable title released this year, its far and away the strongest example to date of trying to use the videogaming form to create something of real artistic substance.

Phenomenal effort from TGC, and frankly a game that will be talked about long after pretty much every other title released this year is forgotten.

It certainly sounds like the year of the disappointing AAA blockbuster certainly.

Mass Effect 3
Max Payne 3
Diablo 3
Assassin's Creed III

And possibly Hitman Absolution and Black Ops II from some comments I've been seeing.

So I could see a downloadable focused title taking GOTY yeah. There are some great contenders in games like The Walking Dead, Dust: An Elysian Tail and Mark of the Ninja.
Personally speaking though my GOTY so far is XCOM ^_^

I'll probably think Gaf is trying to drive me nuts if they do that. I'll take COD over that.

ME2 was 2010 though.

Path of Exile is my game of the year, so for me - yeah.

However, its a kinda hardcore arpg with customisation that intimidates some (it really isn't as intimidating as it first appears once you spend a bit of time with it). It's also unashamedly old school in terms of its rough and ready appearance and controls - which for me was a point in its favour - but for most here and outside of Gaf will just ensure it has a niche appeal.

I loved Journey but fuck me if a game with next to no actual gameplay wins GOTY.

Anyway, my personal GOTY happens to be not only downloadable, but also F2P.

So far, mine is Dishonored.
I have to say, though, that Walking Dead is 2nd/3d (depends on how ep. 5 turns out), so yeah... quite a bit of disappointing AAA titles this year.

So far I'm going with Dishonored. Mark of the Ninja and Hotline Miami were pretty great though.

Overall, a weak year for blockbusters, but 2013 is going to go nuclear

ME2 taking it over SMG2 was the biggest travesty, I still can't believe that happened. I can feel my blood beginning to boil right now.

CoD over Hitman?

Pretty disgusting. CoD shouldn't make it near any top 10 list of a gaming enthusiast forum, just like Transformers shouldn't make Roger Ebert's best films of the year list.

Some years were better, some were worse.

I think Journey will scoop up a few GotY awards from mainstream outlets, but there's still an aversion to handing that award out to downloadables (which is fucking stupid), so I think we'll see a lot of Halo 4 and Mass Effect 3.

Fez is far and away my game of the year, but as of now it looks like the rest of my list will consist of download-only games as well (Thirty Flights, Spelunky, Hotline Miami, etc).

If Mass Effect 3 wins I will throw the biggest paddy. It does not deserve the top spot, not in the slightest.

Right now, either Gravity Rush or Journey has my number one spot. I can't decide yet.

I might need to play more games. Or less... either way. I haven't played anything from this year that I find redeeming. Mass Effect 3 would have come the closest, despite its overall flaws, until.... yeah.

Other than that, the only other new games from this year I have played are SSX and Halo 4. Cannot comment completely on 4, I'm only halfway through it, but I don't like it so far. And SSX was an outright disgrace, an abomination. Worst reboot ever.

Most of the games I've played in 2012 are games from 2011 that were on sale, so I haven't played a terrible lot that would be eligible.

Right now, standings are:

Console: Xenoblade Chronicles
Handheld: Kid Icarus Uprising
Mobile: Rayman Jungle Run

Overall: Kid Icarus Uprising

Still to be considered: Dishonored, Halo 4 (I don't like it right now but I love Halo so I'm willing to let it grow on me), Assassin's Creed 3, Nintendoland, New Super Mario Bros U, Scribblenauts Unlimted.

This is surely older than this year? I remember playing MNC last year at the very least.
