FF - December 1987 - 17 months into the generation.
FFIV - July 1991 - 34 months...
FFVII - January 1997 - 26 months...
FFX - July 2001 - PS2 - 32 months...
FFXI - April 2006 - Xbox 360 - 5 months...
FFXIV - April 2014 - PS4 - 17 months...

It seems last gen saw the fastest arrival of Final Fantasy.

(Only considered home consoles from Sega, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft)
 
I'm excited to see how FFXV turns out, but I'm not really excited to play it... Does that make sense?

In other words, I want it to be good, but it's not my jam. Turn-based 4 lyfe. Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later, but I don't think it's the series' salvation that fans have been hoping for.
 
We will see... I would love for that to be true but I have no confidence it will come out soon right now. I'm very excited for FFXV though based off what we have seen so far!

1. It being reworked on a new engine doesn't change the fact that it spent the entirety of the last generation on an old one. Timely will never be a word used to describe a game that was announced at the start of one game generation, then re-announced at the start of the next.

2. It's next-gen now, after years of current gen development hell. Your argument was that this game will be making a timely arrival. The game is already about four years overdue at this point, a timely arrival is not on the cards.

vXIII/XV wasn't just late to the party, it missed the party entirely and is now hoping to arrive at a decent time for the party the following night. That's how untimely it was.

3. Square Enix managed to fuck up XIV the first time round thanks to a fucked development process, and nearly bankrupted themselves trying to save the game. If that is supposed to be an example of their development process getting better, then pardon me if spending an entire dev cycle fixing a car-crash doesn't fill me with hope. Lightning Returns was using assets from a game that took three years to be released after its first reveal. Again, not filling me with optimism there.

4. There are capable people working on pretty much any major AAA game. XIII had capable people working on it. Still turned out to be a total let-down. Nomura's name being attached to this doesn't do anything to make me feel that SE have fixed the clusterfuck that is their internal development process.

The SNES was released in Japan in November 1990. July 1991 is eight months after that.

The PS2 was released in Japan in March 2000. July 2001 is 15 months from then.

FFXIV came out before the PS4 was even available for sale in Japan and is basically a launch title.

From where are you getting these absurdly long periods "into the generation"?

Using the Genesis for the SNES generation.

Should have used DC for the PS2 generation if they wanted the stretch that one out.

I was one of them as well... lol. At least then I could enjoy games from Sega. Sega would actually localize their games back then. Now I'm resorting to importing them. (PS I'm a HUGE Sega fan but yeah, even lack of localization annoys me).

If it wasn't for Sega and Bandai Namco... I would have regretted my purchase of PS3. PS4 needs some games for me to make me not regret purchasing it.

They're trying to make large-scale battles (it's a war going on...) and include destructible environments and such. This wouldn't be possible with a standard turn based system.

A straight action RPG is better than what FF XII and FF XIII did. Although I liked FF XII's battle system over time, and right now I'm playing FF XIII-2 and liking it a bit, it's unfortunate that those game's combat systems remain simply OK or serviceable for a long time. Never that good from the beginning. So it's nice that they're now just making an action RPG.
 
Don't you see? By taking 7-10 years to come out, it's looped back around to being early!

I have hope that we'll see XV next year, but I'm not going to start making bold predictions on that front. The game was announced 8 years ago, after all. More to the point, I hope that there won't be too long of a wait for XVI to come out afterwards.
 
Most of you misunderstood what OP is saying.

Without considering FFXIV which is a MMO, FFXV will be released sometime around 2015/16. This means it comes out around the same time where most other big hitters are released, compared to previous gens. Therefore, it IS a timely arrival in that case, relatively.

Most of the other big hitters didn't start development in 2006.

I hope Square are already working on the PS5 Final Fantasy, or they just might have to skip out a generation.

What proof is there that versus will even come out next year or the year after? The OP is presuming this with no evidence to back it up.

If we take our mind off the existence of "Versus XIII", mainline FF has actually came out in a fairly consistent manner.

FFX - 2001
FFXI - 2002
FFXII - 2006
FFXIII - 2010
FFXIV - 2013
FFXV - 2015/2016

Versus XIII wasn't/shouldn't be announced, because they were barely working on it for many years since initial reveal. Most of the involved developers were working on various other titles.
 
This couldn't wait six days? If there's no E3 trailer, unless they specifically say "Wait for TGS", Square obviously doesn't have it together yet. Why not wait until you can get more information?
 
I just dont know what expect anymore, they already said last year they wont keep us in the dark for too long anymore but guess what? no info since E3 2013

Im guessing they will speak about the release date sometime in 2015

If you know anything, you would realize that Versus XIII actually started full development on 2011.
 
The only way FFXV will ever be released is if Square Enix goes bankrupt, and the company that bought the rights to Final Fantasy will give its remains to Gearbox so they can actually finish the thing.

i honestly think they both will. TLG in april 2015, FFXV in october 2015.

HL3 in 2014. in exactly 4 months.

This is Final Fantasy architecture. People routinely build civilizations around active, massive flows of lava from very aggressive volcanoes.

OK, now I see what's going on. I still think that that way of calculating is invalid; what matters is the console that the game is released on, not a rival console considered to be of the same "generation". There are enough sticks to beat S-E with; this is not one of them.

Clearly, the boats are being protected by the same invisible walls that prevent you from wandering past the edge of any RPG map.

It doesn't seem functional, but that's been the case for many locations throughout the series. Geographical form over function, flash over substance with many FF's.
 
Maybe Holiday 2014.

Possibly Spring 2015.

Probably Summer 2015.

I still don't get it. The next-gen consoles (not counting Wii U) launched in 2013. The earliest we're going to see the new Final Fantasy is 2015, with 2016 potentially pencilled in as a later date. That's two years after the PS4 and Xbone launched, if not three. Not only that, but the first real big wave of titles is coming out this autumn, one year after the consoles were released.

How is FFXV timely when it's coming out at a minimum two years after the starting gun, and a year after the first big wave of titles? Entire games have been developed in less time than that.
 
Do we really have people expecting FFXV at "insert year here" after everything we have been through? Let's wait until we know when this thing is coming.
 
It's a delayed game already. It's timely in the same way The Last of the Guardians would be timely if it were to be announced with new name at E3 and release window given would be 2016. It's FF vs 13

I've never actually guessed when XV is coming out, or given an estimate. But to be fair, they seem to have just recently started working full force on XV. And if we look at how quickly they turned around XIV, it would be pretty strange if it took them years to get this one released.

I am basing my assumption on how tons of next gen heavy hitters are coming next year. (The Order, Witcher 3, Arkham Night, The Division, Mortal Kombat , Halo 5)

If we discount for a second the premature versusXIII announcements and assume that FFXV is indeed coming in 2015,then Single player FF is making pretty good time this gen.Its not gonna lag much behind compared to last gen.
