It's 2020, and I'm still impressed by my PSP - who needs a Switch?! Anyone else still play PSP?

I love my PSP. It has some of the best rpgs on it like Jeanne d'arc. But I haven't used it in years. My OG OLED Vita on the other hand, gets regular use still. Just finished Cosmic Star Heroine and Adventures of Mana, and will be starting Zero Time Dilemma and Meiq.

Edit: I still haven't opened my sealed copy of Persona Golden yet. I think I'll open it and play that after Zero Time Dilemma, and before I can't see clearly anymore without wearing reading glasses, which I don't yet have.

Oddly enough, just found the box mine came in with the original demo disc and wotnot. Left it out for my brother to take in his room as he's got the PSP now.
He reads this actually...

JAMES. TAKE THE PSP BOX INTO YOUR ROOM, IT'S ON THE DRAWERS ON THE TOP LANDING.

Mine sits in my collection display shelf ever since I got one of those micro SD adapters for my Vita and modded the absolute shit out of that. But the PSP is indeed still very versatile if it's what you've got.

I ordered a Japanese PSP prior to the North American release. It was the only time I did such a thing.

I got Ridge Racer with it - it was the only game I had for months until the NA release and Wip3out Pure ( which was also INCREDIBLE! )

I can't really think of a moment (in gaming) that blew me away more than playing that game for the first time. The screen was way beyond anything I had seen in a portable device. The graphics appeared borderline impossible for a handheld. For those months I must have been asked 100 times what it was I was playing by folks that saw me with it.

The PSP was and is an incredible machine.
I bought a PSP (with RR+Lumines) at launch then returned to the US for Christmas. The customs agent checking my electronics clearly never heard of the PSP yet, and looked at me like I was from the future. PSP as a device was years ahead of its time, on top of a having a great library in every genre

Still am myself. Between console titles and emulators I keep going back to it. Still haven't got used to how colourful and gorgeous GBA titles looks on this timeless piece of portable.

I've kept both my PSP and PS3 alive for many reasons...

...and one of the biggest is to play this gem:

It's 2020 and I have a handheld device that I can take with me anywhere and play Monster Hunter, Tekken, and NHL on the go. Truthfully, I don't need much else in the way of gaming.

It's so awesome to turn this on while taking breaks while working from home.

Plus, with CFW I'm able to store all these games digitally and have access to multiple emulators ranging from NES to PS1 all in the palm of my hands. The range of RPGs I can play this way is staggering, including those native to PSP.

It's 2020, and I'm still impressed by my PSP. The little device that could. DS was awesome too, but lol, I sold that thing long ago.

Here is mine playing the opening area of the original Wild Arms, special Hannah Montana edition:

PSP? I'm still impressed that I can play an Uncharted game that's more interesting than Uncharted 4 on my PS VITA!

I have CFW on my PSP Go. I love the go version of the PSP and being able to get all of the umd only titles on it is amazing.

I've never held a psp go but it's always looked kinda top heavy to me... is that not the case? Comfy to hold?

I do OP! I love my PSP Go but the only downside is that I get cramps from prolonged use. They Pair good with Sony headphones via blutooth

I like my PSP - used to watch videos on my way to commute before smartphone days. It's been sitting in my drawer for a while though, along with my Vita.
Playing game, because of the screen blurring - it's rather hard on my old eye these days.

edit: just pulled it out from my drawer and see if it still works... and yes, battery was discharged (I changed battery like a couple years ago) - but it seems to be still in working condition. :D (Just played a bit of Valkyria Chronicles II a bit)

My unmodded OLED Vita, on the other hand seems to be completely discharged and its flashing orange lights on the PS button. Hopefully the battery isn't completely dead... but I think due to its age, battery probably would be up for replacement.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
A fun PSP story:

A friend of mine, way back when, bought an entire pallet of this UMD (all sealed) from a discount wholesaler. I believe he had about a thousand copies.

Yes, soft-core Cinemax level porn but on a disc you could put in your PSP and watch anywhere. Over the next few years, he proceeded to sell every copy he owned on eBay and made and absolute killing. Apparently, kids were buying it and he got more than a few nasty notes from parents that were outraged. Near the end of the PSP's life span, sealed copies of this movie were going upwards of $40-$50 each, and my friend was laughing all the way to the bank.

I wouldn't call it exactly "comfy". It took a little time to adjust to the small buttons. Particularly the select and start buttons. I definitely don't find it top heavy at all. My favorite thing about it is the 16gb internal memory with a 16gb memory stick allows you to put a butt-ton of games on it.
It's very small and light. I think it the best portable form with the right balance between system/display size. You probably wouldn't want to use it for a marathon gaming session because of comfort, but that seems to be the case with any handheld.
I played 50+ hours of TiTS on it when I first bought it years ago. I could get 1 1/2 - 2 hours playing before I would notice any discomfort.

It's been 16 years and I'm still angry about the lack of second analogue stick. I'll never forgive, I'll never forget and the person/s responsible are yet to be named, shamed and made to face hard time.

I'd forgive them if they patched and remapped most games for the PSVita so that I wouldn't have to use the insufferable control schemes they had to come up with to combat this idiotic omission. I'd be surprised if it even saved them a dollar per unit.

As you can tell, after all this time, I'm having a completely proportionate response.... :messenger_pouting: 🤪:messenger_weary::messenger_angry::lollipop_pouting::lollipop_steam_nose:

I have mine original fat PSP battery inflated like a balloon ...but it works without it just connected.....still have the spiderman movie that came included.

Played great games like the MGS....but moved to Vita...

I played the shit out of mine. Ridge racer to go, yes please. I loved lumines and played a lot of GTA. I could use that disk to launch images of my psx games I made.

but it's an old old machine...i wouldn't replace a 1TF handheld with it

i do wish i still had it....riiiiiiiidge raaaaaaacer!!!!

I spent countless hours on my first job playing Final Fantasy Tactics on it. Damn, I love it. I had the white Darth Vader themed one. A looker.

One thing I do miss is not being able to play my physical PSP games.

not sure if you realize this but you can make psx games fill the whole screen. I know some people prefer the 4:3 aspect ratio but you should really make use of that OLED screen (hold the home button)

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
PSVita = Ultimate nostalgia portable device. Can play PSone and PSP games right away.

Coincidentally, I just revived my OG fat PSP and was just playing it today. Love my PSP, running CFW 6.61. So much potential.

I have finished a handful of lengthy PS1 games on there and that option to swap disc is done that way. Yet I failed to notice that. Genius. :messenger_grinning_squinting: It’s like I never even bothered to look for it. Thanks jeezhow embarrassing lol

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Ugh, please don't stretch them to fill the screen (unless it has a mode to only enlarge but remain 4:3 so you still have black bars at the sides, just not the top and bottom, or maybe integer scaling so it just doubles the pixels exactly or whatever).

It introduced me to Monster Hunter and had pretty cool Tekken ports to play multiplayer with so I'll always cherish it, but many of the games were either old ports (and we didn't even get the good stuff in the West, like Princess Crown) or no good lesser caricatures of console games.

The screen has awful ghosting too so there are better systems (portables too) to use for emulation.

I use my Vita but I'm still impressed by what an awesome device my PSP Go is to this day and the library is pretty impeccable. PSP games still look best on it, too, since there is some softness to the image when emulated on Vita.

I own three PSPs and two Vitas. I still play and love these devices. The PSP has a killer huge library. The OLED Vita is simply the greatest and most elegant handheld ever made.

Integer scaling might be a preferred option, to eliminate blur.

I have the stripped out model they released towards the end. Custom firmware was incredible especially for Ps1 emulation and backing up games. PSP is worth it for Final Fantasy Tactics and Ogre Battle alone.

I play the occasional PSP game on my Vita if that counts? Finished Ridge Racer earlier this year.

I still have my white PSP 3000, but I haven‘t used it since I got the Vita.

as bad as Danny Zuko in gym knickers
Yup! Got a 3000 version in cyan. Got it for the two GTA Stories games mainly. Pinball Dreams (PSP minis) is also one of my favorites. Don't take my PSP out of the house anymore, because I don't want to lose it.

A great console often perceived as a failure.
Just finished writing an article about it for the 15th anniversary.

I'm just still angry about the single analog stick...

I still have my PSP 1000 from. I played on it for a decade almost non-stop. Last time I checked the battery was fine and the console still worked.

Edit: so many great games:
