J-Dramas

J-drama newb here. Only seen an episode of random things here and there and wasn't impressed any of it.

So I will ask, any J-drama worth a damn compared to American shows? Romance preferred.

I keep seeing this advertised

Kiina, it airs tonight - a mystery drama.
Anyone gonna watch?

Is there a J-Drama that stands heads and shoulders over the rest? I won't say The Wire of J-Drama, because that's never going to happen, but J-Drama that's really fine piece of television, Japan or elsewhere.

I think My Boss, My Hero is one of my favorite things on television ever. I think its my 2nd fav thing (falls behind Duke of Mount Deer 2000 for me.)

My all time favorite is Ikebukuro West Gate Park. It is from 2000, but it is easily one of the most quality J-Dramas out there.

It doesn't come of nearly as cheesy as most J-Dramas either.

When I had access to the Asian Network, I remember an action drama that was called "24 Hour Police Drama" -- TOTAL 24 ripoff. So funny. I hope to find clips.

Watched Kiro Kage a little while ago (didn't feel like bumping the thread for it). It was OK, classic j-drama. It didn't deserve the votes it got on j-dramas though, I felt kinda mislead. But j-dramas are really hit and miss.

Seigi no Mikata is freaking awesome! I was looking for another show like this, I'm so glad I came across it. So much bad/mediocre jdrama out there.

this thread keeps on giving. I should get back into some J-dramas. But too much anime and TV and gaming backlog! Guh! need a clone to watch and play crap all day!

I was looking for some subs of that but couldnt find any, so watched Mei-chan no Shitsuji instead..

only episode 1 subs are out so far. They aren't hardsubbed, so you need the video and sub file separate.

the idea behind the show is that 4 struggling couples decide to see if their original mate was the right choice, so they switch them around and see if things are better or worse than they were.

I read the synopsis on this one. A prep school where everyone has butlers? Fuck it, I'm in. I don't even have to look this up: This is totally an adaptation from a serial comic targeted at teenage girls, right? Why do I always end up watching these? Furthermore, why do I end up liking them?

BTW, I made the NIT thread, and the OP had a joke that no one could expect to get unless they were both fans of J-Drama and Kentucky basketball, plus if they had a decent working knowledge of Japanese. My "Soukanzu" explaining the NIT.

I was totally going to bail on Meichan no shimobe or whatever after the first few minutes...

but then she appeared. I have to give it a few episodes, at least.

Also, I'm wanting to watch something campy and fun, much like Rookies. Anything of the sort? Preferably something not meant for 15 year old girls.

Alright dudes. Finished yet another show.

There is one convention in these teen comedies I wish would go away. It's the whole "I know you tried to fuck me over earlier, but it's okay now because you are helping me in the finale for a minute" thing. Like, you just want them to one time say, "Uhh, you shot me with a goddamn arrow. Fuck off."

A lot of people here seem to like Densha Otoko. I bought this series based on all the hype I read. The whole thing just seemed so slow and predictable. I could barely take Yamada's incessant stuttering. I did, however, thoroughly enjoy the ending where
Yamada confesses his feelings for Hermes and she returns them
despite it being the most predicatble scene in the whole drama. It almost made up for the pain of watching everything that led up to it.

I found Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend) quite enjoyable. It was really light-hearted and silly. Many episodes made me crave for gourmet desserts and cream puffs. The development of the robot is realistic and so is Riiko's (lead female actor) affection for him (afterall, it's not until episode 7 that she begins to show any sincere feelings for the robot).

Hanazakari No Kimitachi e (Hana Kimi) I would also recommend if you like your romantic comdies. It is about 20% romance and 80% comedy (the romance drives the characters and story but everything is executed humurously). Nakatsu is hilarious.

For me, Hana Yori Dango 1 & 2 did not live up to the hype. It was still enjoyable and is definitely an above-average series, but from all the people raving on about it I was expecting....well, more. Still recommended.

I'm currently watching "Binbou Danshi" and it's very strange.

It's good to see Shun Oguri play a part that is different from his usual "I'm good looking and too cool for school" part. Of course, I'm watching it because Yuu Yamada is in it and, well, she does it for me.

Anyway, basically, it's about a guy who takes on other people's debts and then uses his ingenuity to pay them off through various odd jobs. The main dude is really naive and it's endearing, I suppose. . Yuu plays a high-maintenance girl who likes expensive things. Same ol'.

Anybody else watch this?

I watched some of Binbou Danshi but I haven't finished it yet. I need to get back to it some day.

Is anyone else watching Love Shuffle? end of episode 6 is such a twist

Love shuffle plot twist didn't surprise me for some reason.. I was half expecting something like that. :lol

it's not so much the twist that got me as it was
that creepy ass look he gave Ojiro right after it was revealed. And the whole situation with Reiko was also a big twist.

true, that was a creepy look. Lol. Reiko I kinda figured it could end up being something weird like that.. just because of how she seemed about things. I kinda figured it would be a guy though based on how he was and showed no real interest in any of the girls there.

So it looks like there are at least (at least) a dozen dramas starting this coming Tuesday. Besides Atashinchi no Danshi (which will be the biggest release this Spring and I'm sure all of you will be watching thanks to Horikita Maki ), anything stand out to anyone? Lots of them seem like detective shows too.

Any romance show recommendations? I've seen a few romance/drama Korean dramas but I just can't find a good Japanese one.

Thanks for these recommendations. I really love light hearted comedies.

I did not see THAT comming!! It made me so sad i had no one to talk about it with!

Love Shuffle was good, but the ultimate finale was too predictable compared to all the crazy twists it had leading up to it.

there are always a billion detective shows to go along with the million medical drama.

the only two shows I'm going to check out are Meitantei no Okite and Ikemen Sobaya Tantei ...which are still detective shows, but comedy based, so hopefully not so boring.

Just watched the first episode of Shiroi Haru starring Hiroshi Abe, a new show for the spring season of dramas. It was really good. Great premise and great lead actor. I just wonder where it's gonna go.

hai guys, i've just watched the first episode of atashinchi no danshi, I'm not sure if i think it's awesome or utter fail. Either way im in for the ride now! I've also got Konkatsu!, and Smile linned up what some soft subs appear over the next few days, any other new dramas that most people will have on their radars that i am missing?

Shiina Ringo sang the opening for Smile, btw. I don't know why she wasted her talents for a show starring Matsumoto Jun. But e'rybody has to make a living, I suppose.

So Is spring usually a big season for J-Dramas as it is for anime?

(In the sense that more new dramas are aired around this time)

Dramas are always 12 eps or less (except for the rare occasion and taiga dramas) So the same amount begin and end every season.

any one seen love generation or am i just old =3

I saw it a few years ago >_>;. Only show I'm really gonna check out this season is Meitante no Okite. I am super pumped for Twin Spica since I love the manga and the anime but the airing date for it is weird, starts on the second to last week of spring or something.

Edit: After Shouta's post, I checked out Shiroi Haru as well, first two eps were much better than I was expecting and it probably became my favorite show of the season (though the competition isn't exactly stiff). As usual Abe pulls off an outstanding performance.

I'm watching Change right now and I really didn't expect the show to be so funny. The first episode's not great but from then until ep 5 (which I just watched) has been gold. The election manager is one of my favourate characters in a drama I've seen recently.

So far it has some pretty cliched plot elements but on the bright side it seems to be dealing with them faster than I expected. Looking forward to more.

Anybody interested in an invite to Drama Fever? It's going out of beta in August but if you want an invite pm me. It's all korean dramas right now but they're supposed to add other countries dramas later.
