In Gokusen's case the drama was definitely better than the anime, which I didn't care for at all.

Oh good, that gives me hope. I was not a fan of the Gokusen anime and only watched it because I wanted something somewhat similar to GTO.

Can someone recommend dramas that are funny but not excessively wacky? For example, I love Kekkon dekinai Otoko but had a very hard time watching My Boss My Hero. I could also use some romance comedy recommendations as well (along the lines of Full House, even though that's Korean).

What the hell, here's a list of shows I've liked and disliked.
Like: Densha Otoko, Full House, GTO, Nodame Cantabile, Dragon Zakura, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko

Dislike: My Boss My Hero, Nobuta wo Produce, Akihabara@DEEP

Mixed feelings about Yama Onna Kabe Onna and Gokusen

I read the premise. It's shocking. Jun Matsumoto NOT playing a "badass with a heart of gold from a wealthy family he hates?" Or is he still playing "a badass with a heart of gold from a wealthy family he hates?" and I haven't been reading into this plot enough?

I just hated the entire show. The characters acted like a bunch of damned brats and all that. Just killed me.

check out Hana Yori Dango, but to be clear I saw all the shows you like but none of the ones you dislike, so yeah.

im still gonna check it out, but if its as boring as the Honey and Clover drama, I will just stop two or three episodes in. That said, I need to revisit the Honey and Clover drama to see if they totally ruined the
biking
scene or not.

Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi is such an amazing show. After finishing it, I think it up there with Nodame and Hana Yori Dango as my favorite jdrama. I think it is easily the funniest one.

Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love SP just aired, I wonder if it's any good... I hope it provides a better ending/resolution than the final episode did lol...

girls love it thoough ... for some reason they looooove it

i just found it boring and cheesy, but i enjoyed the comic

I just finished Moto Kare and I'm starting Honey and Clover. I liked the first episode. I thought this was some kind of pedo story based on images from the anime.

It sure does :D
Jesus, Nagasawa masami is cute.

Well I am jumped into this little side of entertainment...

I am starting with Beautiful life.
I just saw the first episode and some of the second...I am really enjoying it.

:D

Odd question, but are there any recent dramas or movies about Zainichi other than Tokyo Wankei?

I am watching Proposal Daisakusen right now and while im enjoying it, I cant help but think that Ken is a jackass for wanting to ruin another persons marriage and that the girl he loves is a bitch because apparently for every good thing he does, she hates him for someone else and that is the reason they didnt end up together. Also, the short guy (Tsuru?) is pretty annoying.

Im so happy I decided to watch Proposal Daisakusen now that the SP is out, the actual series ending is terrible. The SP is pretty decent.

Just finished Nodame Cantabile. It kinda illustrates why certain comedic takes don't work outside the animated world. Chiaki comes off as an abusive asshole when they're just exaggerating for laughs.

I don't really agree too much for the main series, but I do think that for the SP they went a big overboard with some of the comedic stuff.

Oh, I really liked the show, but was just pointing out that some of the time I was thinking "ow, that must hurt" instead of "haha!" This doesn't include the slowmo harisen slap, though. :lol

Yeah, but im not sure if you saw the SP yet, but they have Chiaki
pick up and toss Nodame (replaced with an obvious doll in the air for no apparent reason.
That was one of the times I was wondering why they needed to go that overboard with the whole comic stuff.

the only time when making a drama way too comic like bothered me was with Honey and Clover, so much so that it got tiring to watch it after 2 episodes.

I haaated that drama

Hmm I'm looking forward to Gokusen 3
Hopefully it won't be as boring as Gokusen 2 *runs*

Oh and also rookies =)

I'm really enjoying Hotaru no Hikari right now. The main character (Ayase Haruka) is really cute and it's funny. In some ways it's almost like the female version of Densha Otoko since she's romantically inept.

Yeah she's awesome. I loved that drama :D
All of the characters were special in their own way
But that Makoto was so lifeless =/

K-Drama OK? I am almost done watching I Am Sam. It's funny enough, and all the main female characters are cute, haha.

No apparent reason? The depths of japanese live-action low budgetry know no bounds, and that is reason enough. ;)

Sometimes the low budget is hilarious. The first episode of GTO was hilarious because it had the scene where Onizuka runs upto gate, jumps, then it goes to another shot when he lands on the ground on the other side. There is another scene where he jumps up and kick someones head, but they basically had him jump before cutting to a video of someone foot on this guys shoulder, then finishing it up with him on the ground.

I have to now figure out what other series to watch. Everyone is now saying Kimi wa Petto sucks, so I might skip that. I do want to watch more of Binbo Danshi if only because it is odd to see Oguri Shun acting all happy.

HnH was a very cute series. :) I didn't really like Densha Otoko though so I wouldnt want to compare it to that. :lol

I just finished watching Nodame Cantabile. I Am Sam was good but Nodame Cantabile was just amazing. Truly brilliant. Any suggestions for other A-Drama's in that vein? I am truly humbled Nodame Cantabile. Man. Spent the last 11 hours watching it all the way through. Wow.

edit:

I took it completely differently. Sure the stupid plane and the ragdoll were annoying, but when it came down to the exaggerated moments, I've seen enough silliness in anime to appreciate it as that, exaggerations. I didn't really *see* him flinging Nodame into a rock because had that happened her face would've been bloodied up, etc. :)

I quite enjoyed the experience, but perhaps it is my love for classical music.

I don't know if they are similar in terms of theme, but other drama quality wise similar to Nodame are Hana Yori Dango, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, and Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi. Oh, and Densha Otoko is really good and others seem to consider it the "best", but I didn't like it as much as the previously mentioned ones.

The international channel started playing one called "Super Temp" or something, last night. The main character is the same lady that was the lead on the one with the fake bride at the peach farm, I forget the name of it.

Seems kinda iffy so far. I wish they'd play H2.

Wow, the first episode of Rookies is practically a movie in terms of length. I hope someone subs it soon, but I don't think ive seen a j-drama before where the first episode was this much longer.

As a fan of classical music myself, I frequently found myself getting annoyed at Chiaki's fake conducting. It didn't match the orchestra and music half of the time and I kept cringing. However, I put up with it. I also found Nodame the character to be incredibly annoying and overly wacky at first (I almost stopped watching the show altogether after the early episode where she puts on heavy makeup and acts crazy), but she grew on me. Overall though, excellent excellent show that gets better and better.

Nodame Cantabile was what got me into the whole J-Drama. I just love the wackiness thats present in most J-Drama.

lately I have been watching several Korean Dramas. What is up with quadri-love angle in every show?

There's a reason why K-Dramas are made fun of. =x

well I really liked Couple or Trouble/ Fantasy Couple. I thought it was great esp the character of Han Ye Seul.

As for Japanese Winter shows, of the two I watched I did not like them much. Ashita Kita no Yoshio and Shika Otoko were both average.

If anyone wants to watch a really good mystery/romance drama check out Koori no Sekai / Ice World. I am up to ep 7, its been amazing so far.

Those are usually just split into 2 weeks of shows on the channel here. I wanna see that before it comes on the channel here, though...

Buh? They finally made a drama out of that manga?

Yeah, it aired a day or two ago. Only show that really look good this season (I know nothing of the Rookies manga, but it seems like its GTO with baseball, so im game.)

Haha, yeah, I wonder how many in that show actually played.

Any dramas in the same style as the Chinese wuxia ones but set during the Sengoku Jidai or the time of the Shinsengumi (I forget the period name >.>)

Ok, imagine if Groundhog Day was a little more like Sliders in that every time the day starts over something would be slightly different than the last time. That's pretty much how Gokusen feels now.

I think it's my first J-Drama, and it's nothing really new, but I'm watching Teru Teru Ashita and enjoying it more than I thought I could.

Skip Gokusen, watch Rookies.
