J-Dramas

Is the new GTO any good. The original live action drama is my favorite of all time. I really loved that show, so much emotion and all regardless of the cheese factor. I remember hearing about a new one but haven't checked it out yet. Any impressions so far?

Has anyone seen Orange Days?

Kai Yuuki (Satoshi Tsumabuki) is in his senior year at university studying social welfare psychology. At present, he is in the middle of job-hunting season. He is finding it difficult with no job offers so far.
One day, he meets a girl who is playing violin in the campus. She is Sae Hagio (Kou Shibasaki). In marked contrast to her beautiful tone and attractive looks, her personality is somewhat impertinent. And to top it off, she communicates through very vulgar sign language.
Four years ago, she lost the most important thing for a violinist - her hearing. As a result Sae closed off her inner self from the outside world.
Kai finds himself on a date with Sae, in place of his best friend. Unexpectedly, he comes into contact with Sae's private side.
Love, job-hunting, friendship... Setting a campus in spring as a dorama`s backdrop, it's the start of a glittering youth drama.

I saw orange days a long time ago and I did like it, but then again back then I liked a lot of things I don't any more. But I think it's one of the better jdramas

So has there been anything good for 2012?

The only thing I've had time for is GTO (the remake) and Rich Man Poor Woman. GTO wasn't as good as the original, but Rich Man Poor Woman was pretty good for what it is.

If anyone has any other current season suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Probably mentioned many times: Liar's Game & Bloody Monday. Liar's Game is great as mind-bender, really great setting. Bloody Monday is a bit more J-Drama, but it is interesting to watch Japan's take on 24.

I'll check them out. Thanks.

Is there any J-Dramas that doesn't play by the rules of "Gorgeous guy gets the Gorgeous lady?" Like for example Densha Otoko or My Boss My Hero.

Frankly I am rather tired seeing that trope getting overused in mainstream entertainment--including J-Dramas, unfortunately--and would like to enjoy something new & refreshing.

Hana Yori Dango fits the bill, if you haven't seen it.

On the whole, Japan seems to enjoy tales of people from different socioeconomic classes coming together rather than plain people getting together with beautiful people. Celeb to Binbo Taro, Rich Man Poor Woman, Kimi Wa Petto, and others come to mind. Densha is the only example I can think of where a plain guy tries to get with a beautiful woman. By "plain" I mean truly plain, and not just a good looking dude that they've thrown some ugly clothes/glasses/a haircut/etc on before the inevitable moment where he gets a haircut and puts on a suit and turns into Prince Charming. I know that kind of happened in Densha, but at least he was still at least a foot shorter than Hermes, even if he wasn't really plain anymore.

Boys on the Run!
Watch it. It just aired this season and the main character is similar to that of Densha Otoko but just not as bad.

I watched episode 1 of Boys on The Run on your suggestion...

Mmm....I don't know how I feel about the main character. One episode in and he's
attempting to rape her in a love hotel
before magically
making up with her and getting in a bathtub
. This show is like Densha Otoko if you took all the innocence and whimsy out of it.

I'll keep watching
he showed her porn featuring a dog FFS, I have to know what he'll fuck up next
. Hopefully it gets better.

Finished watching Kagi no Kakatta Heya which was pretty good, though I always liked most detective/crime solving j-dramas. Some nice plot twist too with likeable characters.

Kaseifu no Mita eh, typical j-drama, not very well acted also very predictable.

Been going down a list of Television Drama Academy Awards to see dramas that may be good. Kagi no Kakatta Heya I liked, Mita not so much. Not sure how Mei-chan no Shitsuji won, remember it being pretty shit. It does have Galileo, Tiger & Dragon, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko and Ikebukuro West Gate Park, so the list is not all bad.

Just finished Soredemo, Ikite Yuku. Like it, it was a bit over acted but still good. Ending also was pretty decent.

Currently watching Monsters. Man this show is not clever at all with it's mysteries. You can easily tell who the murder is before the ep is half through. The comedic timing is also pretty bad, they try way too hard. Kagi no Kakatta Heya is superior in every way, same goes with Galileo. Watch those shows instead for your mystery crime dramas.

Doctor X is your usual hospital drama but it's pretty decent with a good female lead character.

Strange to find this thread after I finished Hana Yori Dango. I'll probably watch the korean remake just cuz I enjoyed it so much. I'm currently watching Ikebukuro west gate park.

..GTO is still KING.

My man

Kudo Kankuro is my favorite j-drama writer

Woah just finished watching Legal High, very fun show. It's not your usual good feel J-Drama show instead it made fun of those shows especially characters that are "good hearted" all the time. Seriously watch this show, easily the best of 2012 with Kagi no Kakatta Heya being 2nd.

First ep of Galileo Season 2 was pretty good. If you enjoyed the first series you'll enjoy the first ep of S2. The new partner is alright so far. Also watched 35 sai, Kasuka na Kanojo and Detarame Hero are first couple eps are alright but I don't see myself finishing those series.

Eh, this is kinda the unofficial thread for J-Dramas. Anyways holy shit Legal High is getting a sequel! Didn't know it had a special ep recently made.
