anybody see the drama version they did of Hotaru no Haka (Grave of Fireflies) a couple years back? It was pretty good.

Motokare was pretty good. I liked most of the actors in that one. Long Vacation is really old.. couldn't get past the second episode. Oyaji is a pretty good one with her as is Shotgun Marriage.

Non related to Hirosue, but Liar Game is pretty awful imo. The plot is so ridiculous and the acting is bad. Even with Erika Toda looking really hot/cute in there, its hard to watch.

I like j-dramas, but is it just me or do they always have the same actors?

Like, that one guy (was the ascii guy in Densha Otoko) who plays the "too cool for school" character. He's in like every show... as the too cool for school character. Actually, I've never seen a J-drama that didn't have a character from Hana Yori Dango in it.

Well, my guess is that you're watching fansubs. Some groups like specific actors/actresses and so they will sub the dramas with those people in them.

Then you haven't seen many dramas before 2005? Or many in general? I mean, yeah, the talent pool isn't huge, but its a lot bigger than you think.

They tend to use popular actors more often because it's an easy way to get ratings.
 
Haven't seen too many J-Drama's, I should definitely check them out. I've seen a couple of Korean Sitcoms, those are pretty good too :D
 
So, what is the mystique of Japanese dramas? I mean do they offer anything other than being in the language from the land of video games? I've never really seen a lot in them, and that gets even less so for a non-japanese audience. I mean, days of our lives probably has the better story arcs/acting/production/everything.

Plus I can't STAND the sound of dramatic Japanese. It just sounds so lame to me.

Well, of course I was exaggerating.

But, actually you nailed it right on the head. I haven't seen pretty much any before 2005. There are a few I have been looking for, but they simply aren't available or too difficult to find. And, yes, I haven't seen many. Just the ones that Gaf recommends.

I just thought it was funny that the past 3 dramas I checked out had a character from that show as the male lead. For example, Gokusen has that one dude playing the "troubled kid with the heart of gold" character. I didn't even know he was in it. But,
 
One thing that I like about them, is that they end! Rly.
It's nice to have a complete story that is 12 episodes or so... and then, that's it. Things get wrapped up, you move on...and if it's good, it leaves you wanting more.

Japanese dramas seem to me to have the same over the top mellowdrama that Soaps do;there are plenty of lame detective/hospital stories. It's probably partially true that there are some funny upbeat parts, but I would say it's a smaller part of it.
 
More of a sports/variety show watcher, but I catch a Japanese drama now and again on television. Was catching a little bit of a drama called First Kiss, nothing all that special though.

There are 4 TV season a year in Japan, so most drama actors are in 4 different series a year, in addition to other variety type shows and appearances. Also entertainers in Japan seem more like everyday workers, and less like the pampered stars in US TV shows.

I saw ads for this on the subway recently.

I have a feeling this was on TV a couple of years ago though. Or at least I remember seeing bilboards for it.

Almost all of the Japanese dramas give me that "haven't I seen this a couple years ago?" feeling to be honest, so I'm not surprised.

It's true. There's this guy, he's like the Regis Philbin of Japan:

He's insane, he's in like four shows a day. And they're all live! Starts off with the morning show, then a current affairs type show, then variety in the afternoon, then game shows in the evening (he even hosts the Japanese verison of Who Wants to be a Millionaire). The guy's Captain Domino on weekends and even does commercials too! I'm pretty sure he's a robot.

I just started to watch Hana Yori Dango, and the one other show I remember this guy from was GTO, where he was [spoilers]bullied by by some girls[/spoiler]. It is hilarious how opposite they are.

and im trying to watch a bunch of J-Drama lately, I finished Dragon Zakura which I enjoyed quite a bit, now Hana Yori Dango, next I have no clue.
 
Watching Yama Onna Kabe Onna (Mountain Woman, Wall woman (referring to the size of their breasts))

Pretty funny show. Enjoyable, feel good, silly. With actresses from other shows I've watched already. So classic J-drama stuff. lovely.

Also watched some Detective Academy drama... ooh boy. This one's no good. Stay away. Watch the anime. Live drama version is very poor IMO.
 
Hana Yori Dango is unbelievable, it is sooo good.

I cant believe how much I am enjoying it, I wish I found out earlier about how amazing it is.


has anyone seen Bambino? is that any good?

Serious question... do you really think it's good, or is this more of a "so bad, it's good" thing?

I'm watching it too... it's sooo terrible... but kind of funny every once in a while (and the main girl is of course crazy cute :lol). The comedic parts are enjoyable, but the drama comes off as trying to take itself seriously, when really it's like a power-rangers episode in terms of sophistication.

Needless to say, I'll keep watching.
 
I just watched all of HYD 1 & 2 this weekend after reading all of the manga earlier this week. I don't know if I would have liked it if I wasn't familiar with the source. They really didn't develop Doumyouji enough to make him likeable.

Inoue Mao was really good though :)

it was half and half.

I laughed all at all the fighting scenes and some other moments were pretty bad, but in general I thought it was awesome.

oh, and pretty much every scene with western people or set in New York were awful, the one scene from HYD2 that had me laughing hard was when the two guys were saying "what do you want with Mr. Domyoshi".

normally I dont find many girls that attractive when watching J-Drama, but I thought she was very nice on the eyes.
 
GTO is awesome :lol Tried to like Densha Otoko, it was alright but didn't enjoy it that much.
I'll give Nodame Cantabile a try these week.
 
I've seen at least 50 different J-Dramas.

Ikebukuro West Gate Park (IWGP) is by far my favorite. The books are really good too for those who can read Japanese.

Some of my other favorites are:
