Jay Z Becomes The First Rapper Nominated For The Song Writers Hall Of Fame

I didn't know he was that disliked here. Personally I like him more than Nas though if it were up to me I'd nominate Biggie Smalls.
Can they do posthumous noms?
Nas and Big were both faves of mine before Jay, so I understand why people like them a lot, it was a process towards Jay being my GOAT.

i mean i liked Nas more but people are taking this awards to seriously. This probably a glorified publicity thing and Jay is only there because he respected enough by Hip hop and the pop community and is an "easy" choice for the hall of fame. I'm never going to expect someone like Black Thought or common (not saying there are the greatest) to be on there because they not that well known,

Lmao this made me laugh toooo Loud and wake up my gf😂😂😂😂😂

I like Jay Z but he definitely shouldn't be the first.... Tupac and biggie for starters
"The theme song to The Sopranos
Plays in the key of life on my mental piano
Got a strange way of seeing life like
I'm Stevie Wonder with beads under the doo-rag
Intuition is there even when my vision's impaired, yeah
Knowing I can go, just switching a spare
On the highway of life, nigga it's sharp in my sight
Oh! Keen senses ever since I was a teen on the benches
Every time somebody like Ennis was mentioned
I would turn green, me, being in the trenches
Him, living adventureous, not worrying about expenditures
I'm braving temperatures below zero, no hero
No father figure, you gotta pardon a nigga
But I'm starving, my niggas, and the weight loss in my figure
Is starting to darken my heart, 'bout to get to my liver
Watch it my niggas, I'm trying to be calm but I'm gon' get richer
Through any means, with that thing that Malcolm palmed in the picture
Never read the Qur'an or Islamic scriptures
Only psalms I read was on the arms of my niggas
Tattooed so I carry on like I'm non-religious
Clap whoever stand between Shawn and figures
Niggas say it's the dawn, but I'm superstitious
Shit is as dark as it's been, nothing has gone as you predicted
I move with biscuits, stop the heart of niggas acting too suspicious
This is food for thought -- you do the dishes"

The only person that should have been before Jay is Nas 2 years ago (since his debut came in 94).

Pac's skill was song writing and the imagery behind his words. As a rapper, he wasnt a clever lyricist, but as a poet, the man was a giant. I mean, if this award is literally for "song-writing", Pac should be getting it posthumously, cause hes probably GOAT tier as a song writer in the genre. His best work is extremely evocative.

This, agree completely. And dude wrote his shit and didn't straight bite like a motherfucker.

Uhuh, find me the bitten lyrics on Can I live and American Dreamin please.
Are you trying to imply that any homages Jay paid over the course of his entire 20 year long career are significant enough to pay any attention to?
In a 10 + album long discography?
Terrible, one of the worst arguments commonly used against Jay.
And I'm pretty sure Tupac paid homage to another rapper once or twice, you know like most rappers do.
Including people (like Kendrick a few times) using Jay bars.

There you go, I'm sure you can think of more rappers that could preceed jay Z into the hall of fame.

Oh well.

You've never heard Reasonable Doubt.

Bought it when it came out. It wasn't praised nearly as much as it is today (because there were better rappers out there).

On that note, has anyone ever entered their prime during the wrong era more than Rakim? Still remember when I got the Paid In Full vinyl as a little kid. And PE's "It takes a nation..." came out a year after. Not a bad time to be a kid.

Reasonable Doubt not being as praised then as it is now is no remark not the quality of Jay's lyricism or how he compares
It did well, had some acclaim, and got him on the map, that's all that was needed, and the people who did love it then (some people did), had a great album to rock with.
Plenty of those supposed much better rappers already had established careers so it makes sense that they'd be selling better than an independent Jay.

"Why I'm watching every nigga watching me closely?
My shit is butter for the bread, they wanna toast me
I keep my head, both of them, where they supposed to be
Hoes'll get you sidetracked, then clapped from close feet
I don't sleep, I'm tired, I feel wired like codeine
These days, a brother gotta admire me from four fiends away
My pain, wish it was quick to see
From selling 'caine 'til brains was fried to a fricassee
Can't lie, at the time it never bothered me
At the bar getting my thug on properly
My squad and me lack a respect for authority
Laughing hard, happy to be escaping poverty
However brief, I know this game got valleys and peaks
Expectation for dips, for precipitation we stack chips, hardly
The youth I used to be, soon to see a mill'in
No more Big Willie, my game has grown
Prefer you call me William
Illin' for revenues, Rayful Edmond-like
Channel 7 News, round seven jewels, head dead in the mic
Forgetting all I ever knew, convenient amnesia
"I suggest you call my lawyer, I know the procedure"
Lock my body, can't trap my mind
Easily explain why we adapt to crime
I'd rather die enormous than live dormant, that's how we on it
Live at the main event, I bet a trip to Maui on it
Presidential suites my residential for the weekend
Confidentially speaking in codes since I sense you peeking
The NSX rental, don't be fooled, my game is mental
We both out of town, dog, what you trying to get into?
Viva Las Vegas, see ya later at the crap tables
Meet me by the one that starts a G up
This way no Fraud Willies present gambling they re-up
And we can have a pleasant time, sipping margaritas
Ge-ge-gyeahh"

Shame, really, with Black Thought being top 5 dead or alive, as a lyricist.

1. Nas is better.
2. Jay-Z is still a mediocre rapper.
3. This is definitely his strongest card and a well deserved nom, easily one of the best writers in the game. I think plenty are better rappers, but as a writer, there are few.

Ive only ever heard this kind of stupidity on the internet, never in the real world & never amongst the dude's peers. Even from rappers that have reason to be spiteful toward him.

Jay Z won

Nas lost

No need to put down one to big up the other.

But Jay is clearly better

ya'll are ruining gafhop with this historical relativism

You've never heard Reasonable Doubt.

not even jigga's best work

He has GOAT level bars going all the way up to Magna Carta Holy Grail.

I feel like there's this line being drawn, where you acknowledge Jigga as the GOAT, or you're saying he's a wasteman.

I know I'm the one who started the shit. All I said was that he has made tons of amazing music, but he isn't top 10 GOAT lyricist. I still stand by that. That isn't even an insult.

If he's getting in for making lots of good music, I'm cool with that.

Of all the rappers...Jay Z?

I mean, in his prime he was great, but even then there are far more deserving hip hop lyricists to choose from.
