I tried playing it a few months after release and was quite bored by it. Never went back and never wanted a sequel. No big loss to me but, if I do build my gaming PC I might pick it up on the cheap and give it another chance.
Sony's focus on exclusive blockbusters has come at the expense of niche teams and studios within the PlayStation organization, leading to high turnover and less choice for players. Last week, Sony reorganized a development office in Japan, resulting in mass departures of people who worked on less well-known but acclaimed games such as Gravity Rush and Everybody's Golf. The company has informed developers that it no longer wants to produce smaller games that are only successful in Japan, Bloomberg has reported.
This fixation on teams that churn out hits is creating unrest across Sony's portfolio of game studios. Oregon-based Sony Bend, best known for the 2019 open-world action game Days Gone, tried unsuccessfully to pitch a sequel that year, according to people familiar with the proposal. Although the first game had been profitable, its development had been lengthy and critical reception was mixed, so a Days Gone 2 wasn't seen as a viable option.
Instead, one team at the studio was assigned to help Naughty Dog with a multiplayer game while a second group was assigned to work on a new Uncharted game with supervision from Naughty Dog. Some staff, including top leads, were unhappy with this arrangement and left. Bend's developers feared they might be absorbed into Naughty Dog, and the studio's leadership asked to be taken off the Uncharted project. They got their wish last month and are now working on a new game of their own that will be part of a brand new franchise.
Can we just stop and admit that Jason got this one right. Pretty much everything from this article has turned out to be true. TLOU remake, Bend working on a new IP, Bend unsuccessfully trying to pitch DG2.
This forum's hate boner for Jason is so silly. The guy gets stuff right more often than not. And he's literally the only one holding devs and publishers responsible. I dont care if hes a soyboy in real life. He's the only journalist doing his job in this industry.

agreed - I love Days Gone but I played it after it had been patched to death. The reviewers received an unfinished product. After several delays they have no one to blame but themselves for how the game was received and it certainly affected initial sales. It has since become a cult classic with a huge fanbase - so hopefully somewhere down the line it can get a sequel - but I doubt it happens anytime soon. This guy certainly isn't helping matters.Jesus fucking christ, they are still so butthurt about this game.
It sold well because Sony market push does wonders. Every new IP from Sony sold tons right away: Days Gone, Horizon, GoT ...
But compare Days Gone Metacritic score to those two.
It was unpolished as fuck when it launched, and even today, its way worse than those other 2 (specially compared to GOT)
How many GOTY have Days Gone won? They are sticking to such a sore loser mentality
They are to this day trying to create this narrative that they were fucked by the press or whatever, when in reality they released an average game when every other Sony studio were releasing bangers.
Like someone said, if they got the green light for a new IP then not everything is doom and gloom between Bend and Sony.
I enjoyed the game a lot, but with the Last of Us franchise being what it is for Playstation, I'd rather have them move to something completely new and original.
He's got to take some responsibility too - the game was a buggy mess at launch even after being delayed a couple of times. They shouldn't have shipped a broken product - and that's exactly what
It would be one of the first modern high profile AAA games getting scores docked based on "bugs/glitches/performance" since reviewers sure as shit ignore them in other games before and after that game.People keep saying this but i played this at launch and it was not a buggy experience.
Bugs and glitches are nothing compared to bland and bloaty mechanics in this.It would be one of the first modern high profile AAA games getting scores docked based on "bugs/glitches/performance" since reviewers sure as shit ignore them in other games before and after that game.
It was more to do with the protag and theme.

All valid and well thought out arguments and complaints. now go watch the Gamespot review and see how she brings up none of these points, and ends up turning this game into a racist and sexist stereotype.Bugs and glitches are nothing compared to bland and bloaty mechanics in this.
I enjoyed the game and plan on replaying it on ps5 but this is my take from my first playthrough. I've bought the game full price
-Shooting is average but takes forever to get going until you get good weapons
-Hordes are just annoying until you get good gear 15-20 hours in. Then the game gets more fun
-Bike is a nightmare of low fuel and durability. Gets better later
-Terrible, awful sneaking / trailing missions. Like wtf
-Idiotic, stupid characters straight out of walking dead. Like seriously ? Skizzo is a real apocalyptic survivor? Mike deserved to die, he is so damn stupid.
-PLenty of go there, do nothing missions.
-Huge repetitions in traps as your travel.
-Buying and shopping economy is broken. You get to buy good gear once you leave the camp for good...
-I killed the mill horde earlier and the game bugged the fuck out when it was time to do so in mission
-Your interaction with wife...
-Stupid gang of psychos who you flood and like... what ?
-tons of bugs and performance issues... I kept it installed since the day of release and it was patched like every week. I held off a year and it still was broken.
STILL. The game is somehow much better than sum of it's parts. It got good vibes, graphics and so on. But it's terrible... but I can see why people love it if even I like it despite so many flaws
edit: sorry, I am repeating myself. I really need to replay it on ps5
Check out the Ken Levine thread. Entire forum jumped down his throat and dismissed the article. This time he didnt even rely on anonymous sources, and had actual designers and directors on record and everyone was acting like Jason made it all up.We don't hate Jason for being factually incorrect in his reporting (he's often never so).
We dislike him vehemently because he's an egotistical, arrogant asshole.
IMO, you're right that his reporting is sometimes dismissed too quickly. I would even say he's one of a few people who really break news instead of regurgitating it. But can you really blame people here for having negative initial reactions to him? Right or wrong, his work over the last few years has lead me to believe he thinks those who don't share his views are beneath him, and he seems to stick to safe spaces where disagreement with his work can be stifled. I'd personally have a lot more respect for him if he was willing to debate some of his article slants in places where debate is less controllable, like here for instance. But for some reason that never happens even though the posters here pretty much all fall within the enthusiast crowd.Check out the Ken Levine thread. Seems that some things of the article were true and some other things were totally false:Can we just stop and admit that Jason got this one right.
Ross said the issue was local studio management, not the CEO. Where is the source saying they won't make Death Stranding 2? Norman Redus said they were in talks to having him in the sequel.Instead of making Days Gone 2 and Death Stranding 2, Jim Ryan paid for Godfall, Deathloop, Forsaken, and Ghostwire Tokyo.
If it ever existed, it happened before Jimbo got CEO. And as CEO he isn't in charge of what games get greenlighted or cancelled, there's other people who decides these things.Jim had them making an Uncharted spinoff that was cancelled after a year due to creative difference with ND.
After release they made many bugfixing, added stuff and ported it to PC, plus a big ass game like DG2 would be would need more than 3 years, but I understand what do you mean. It's only after they wasted two years that they started making a new IP last year. The thing with sequels is that they are easy to improve and make. Had they started work on it right away, we would be seeing a release in April if the dev time was 3 years. With a new IP, we are looking at 4-5 years minimum for a 2025-2026 release. Especially with both the creative and gameplay directors leaving the studio.
Him having good info doesn't change the fact that he's a clout chasing piece of shit. Can we just stop and admit that Jason got this one right. Pretty much everything from this article has turned out to be true. TLOU remake, Bend working on a new IP, Bend unsuccessfully trying to pitch DG2.

Reviewers played it without the day one patch. I also played it at launch without any issues.People keep saying this but i played this at launch and it was not a buggy experience.
in the end they succed (8 milions copies sold, 8.4 user metascore) and decision of not making sequel wasn't recived very warmlyInstead of going straight to "open world AAA game with zombies, vehicles, factions and etc." and delivering an unpolished game because they dont have the know how / enough devs yet, they should have gone for something more streamlined like Returnal
Internal management issues was most surprising. Sounds like local management let them down. And they felt deflated since management didn’t convey why they were shooting down a sequel. Not a Jim Ryan or Herman issue. And Jason made some shit up about them being a support studio. Or he framed it inappropriately.in the end they succed (8 milions copies sold, 8.4 user metascore) and decision of not making sequel wasn't recived very warmly
Im watching David Jaffe interview now and at the beginning Jeff Ross said Days Gone 2 was dead same time Shawn Layden stopped being CEO of PlayStation StudiosInternal management issues was most surprising. rofif lol Just saw the creative directors talk about the survival horror element and making the game hard on Jaffe's stream. The game director wanted to make it hard. I mean think about it, how many open world games are hard? All valid and well thought out arguments and complaints. now go watch the Gamespot review and see how she brings up none of these points, and ends up turning this game into a racist and sexist stereotype.
To me, THE biggest problem with the game is its first 10 hours. It is not just boring, it is painfully slow punishing and goes out of its way to make characters unlikeable. The thing is it is by design and I thought the payoff was worth it. You said it yourself, the shooting gets better. The bike gets better. The hordes get better.
In the interview with Jaffe, the creative director brings up how the game's character development wouldnt have felt earned if Deacon was dick only for an hour. The same applies to taking on hordes. Would it as satisfying if you could take on hordes in the first 3 hours of the game? Would you have even liked the bike if the bike was fully upgraded from day one? It wouldnt feel rewarding if it was great right away no? People forget that the game is a survival horror game. You are not OP in Resident Evil when you start out. By the end you are terminator. The same is true here.
I still think the game shouldve started with Iron Mike's camp. Just have the first two camps be optional ones in the middle of the game. Like you said, the game is better than the sum of its parts and thats because there is potential here. 8 million people seem to think so. Critically maligned games dont sell as much. There is something special here and Its a shame Sony execs didnt realize that.

lol Jaffe named a lot of Sony execs who he says are awesome and he loves them, but then left out Jim Ryan and Herman Hurst and says there are other people who are dicks and assholes.
Jim Ryan isn't really that involved with actual game creation & Herman was still just a dude at Guerilla when Jaffe was at Sony.lol Jaffe named a lot of Sony execs who he says are awesome (Scott Rhode, Shawn Layden) and he loves them, but then left out Jim Ryan and Herman Hurst and says there are other people who are dicks and assholes.

Jeff Ross didn't want Syphon Filter reboot (there was some interes in it from higher management) as he didn't have any idea for it is big one ;dlol Jaffe named a lot of Sony execs who he says are awesome (Scott Rhode, Shawn Layden) and he loves them, but then left out Jim Ryan and Herman Hurst and says there are other people who are dicks and assholes.
Jeff Ross and John Garvin are on Jaffe's stream. Jeff clarified his tweet a little. The way he seems to explain it, is that local management in Bend didn't want Days Gone 2. Apparently Bend management didn't even push the pitch to the higher levels of WWS to people like Hulst. Garvin and Ross also confirmed that Naughty Dog North support studio stuff from the Schreier article was over-exaggerated and wasn't that close to the truth. Apparently Bend sent team members to Sucker Punch to help on Ghost, and to Naughty Dog to help on projects. They said that this was standard practice in the industry. When a team is done with a project and doesn't have a lot of work on their hands, they get sent to other parts of the company to help. Ross and Garvin seem positive on Sony overall, especially when it came to creative freedom. Ross's main issue seems to be with management at Bend not pushing Days Gone. Just thought it's been pretty good context to the topic.
Edit* Garvin made the point that Sony doesn't really do the support studio structure, at least while he was there, they are more likely to just shutter the studio, then change their identity into a support team.
Summary from era
So basically information was overblown, just as usual? As expected of gamers, they tend to overreact to basically meaningless things.Jeff Ross basically said his sales figures come from gamstat. That's a website that uses data from trophies...meaning the 8M counts psnow and PSPlus users that played the game and had nothing to do with sales. PC numbers are from steamspy. He had no access to insider data on this
He also said it was Bend management that never pushed for a sequel with Sony. It wasn't Sony's fault because it wasn't proposed to them.
So many meltdowns on twitter and "fuck Sony" posts over nothing lmao

He actually complimented Sony as a good place to work.So basically information was overblown, just as usual? As expected of gamers, they tend to overreact to basically meaningless things.
The whole thing with local managment just sounds so messy. The cynical me thinks managment wanted to kill Days Gone because it's cemented them as a bottom tier dev in WWS, and used the sales number as an excuse to Jeff and John
