6K already? that's impressive!

WOW!!!

Imagine putting yourself on the line like this and having your dreams come true in basically 24 hours!!!

I wonder what Jim must be feeling right now?

I would imagine right now he's so happy he could probably backflip through town while screaming "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!" in one of those full-bodied yells which begins very deep as you put everything into it, but trails off and gets quite light by the end as most of the air leaves your lungs.

My main issue with it is that Patreon has largely been a platform for people who haven't any options, and Jim definitely has a nice niche in the industry. I don't object to him participating - as someone else said, Jim will ultimately be good for Patreon members because he'll bring traffic to the site - but I dunno. No knocks against Jim or anything, he's a funny guy.

I'm happy for him, i always liked his content. I remember a good majority of neogaf hated him in his destructoid days when that final fantasy review came out though. I guess it all passed now.

I'm happy to see him leave The Escapist. He does an okay job as a reviews manager but I've honestly never had much respect for the guy as a person, especially after he tweeted this back in '09:

Yes, I know that's a different username as what he has now. I took a screenshot back then. He originally had the underscore but dropped it. Maybe this will derail things but I think it's worth knowing when he's put himself individually up on Patreon.

You judge one person by one tweet?

No, not really. I was heavily involved in the Destructoid community before Jim got there - back in the era of Robert Summa and him trying his damnedest to look like Jack Shepherd from Lost. There was just a long train of arrogance and offensiveness and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I chose that one tweet because I think it's pretty representative of him as a person in the six years I've known of the guy.

Jim has changed a whoooooole lot since 2009.

I'm pretty sure I said some offensive stuff on the internet five years ago. Please don't hold it against me.

Fun fact: the current average for what Jim is earning from his Patreon is about $4.05 per contributor. That's... Not much, surprisingly.

To put this into perspective, if you added another dollar to that average, the total would be $8050 (rounded up). If the number of patrons rises to 10,000 while maintaining the original average, he'd be earning $40,500. It's interesting how it can scale up so quickly just from individuals paying so little.

Let's dig up old dirt shall we? Jim has changed and posting things like this doesn't make any sense.

Aside from it being kinda weird you took a screenshot of this 5 years ago and saved it (especially since it was never deleted), if we were all judged by someone picking out the worst of what we did in the last five years, I think most of us would look like pretty terrible people.

If you want to make permanent judgments on people because they once tweeted something that offended you, that's your prerogative. But life is short and people are not static objects; they process information over time, which serves to shape who they are. Someone posted an interview yesterday where Jim discusses how his views have changed. And I think that is far more "worth knowing" than some frustrated tweet he made five years ago.

Honestly out of the Escapist's entourage, Jim (and maybe Yatzee) would go Indi without much bother.

If Moviebob tried it (and thus had no one to rein him in when he was being stupid, Ie: When he makes New Game Overthinker) he'd sink like a rock.

Hopefully that works out. I enjoy his videos quite a bit, but I don't really have any interest in funding an echo chamber. The got is a voice of reason but he needs a platform where he can reach those who don't already agree with him and I don't see how the Patreon is going to achieve that.

I love his show but he needs $6000 a MONTH to "Securely" run it full time? 72k a year? Why?

I could take a swing and say that a small amount of that will be for dealing with production costs (IE: Website Running, Podcast Hosting (paying of guests?), buying games (for companies who won't give him the time of day ie: Konami), Legal (For when Self Same give him shit) and Aliens Toys.

Just for fun, i would love Jim in his 1st video after this to do it covered in bling, looking totally pimped out and loaded whilst throwing cash all over the place - it would be glorious.

Just use costume jewellery and $1's Jim :D.

Jim had some pretty reprehensible opinions in the past. The thing is: he's actually one the the few people in the games industry who has actually changed (dramatically too) for the better.

You left out the not-insubstantial dildo budget.

That's really not a lot of money, especially if he wants to make it any better than it already is. Hell, taxes alone will be a big chunk off of that.

And patreon takes "about" 3% to cover credit card processing, and another 5% for themselves. And, yeah, taxes will be taking a massive amount of this as well.

This is just the funniest thing.

It's a good thing he lives in MS and not in NYC, at least. He'd be paying a good deal more on his business taxes, depending on if he set up as LLC or INC.

You are quite organized if you keep those screenshots on file like that.

It might have already been discussed, but how would this affect his taxes? I can't imagine he was on £54,000 a year working at Escapist.

It'll also be hell getting loans and what have you, too, considering it could drop down to £0 in an instant. Although, I suppose it's not too different from being self employed.

I was quite late to the party, but not only do I like his reviews and how articulate they are, but I share quite a lot of gaming interests.

I support Jim as well and I look forward to all three services he will offer - even though I may not listen to many Podcasts.

Why are people complaining about how much money Jim makes on this? Plain jealousy? No one's asking YOU to pay the entire monthly sum, in fact you are perfectly free to consume his work without paying a dime. (And the people who are complaining about this clearly fall in this group)

This patreon is for the people who want to help ensure that Jim can continue to do what he does, without shackles. And the amount of money people are willing to pay to ensure this, that's the amount he deserves. It's really quite simple. For us, what he does is enough.

What would you have him do? Stop accepting any donation over, say, five thousand dollars? Would you say no to money people are willingly offering you for your services? Of course not.

People are so petty.

He is up to 7.2k
Really impressive!

Not a huge fan but he is definitely something different in the industry. Deserves the money a lot more than some of the hacks that are currently in thegames industry.

Well my Internship salary is next to nothing but here go my $1 a month.

I'm happy for Jim, he is one of the few people inside the "gaming media" that I like (it's not like I dislike the others, but most of them could stop writing tomorrow and I wouldn't really care).

Jimquisition is great and while I don't allways agree with him when it comes to reviews (I've like quite a few games that he didn't), I consider him to be a sort of "seal of approval" ,as in, if he says a game is truly great there is a good chance I will enjoy it (still waiting for the Dragon Age review, btw)

I'll donate plenty if he promises to keep the " is it peadophila or not" garbage off this new podcast. The only thing I found jarring from him.
