Jimquisition: Nintendo's Virtual Console Is Trash Garbage (Jan. 9, 2017)

That bone snapping sound effect... x_x; why.

Dripfeeding rehashed ports to a living system is kinda sad, many times sadder to a dead one. Nintendo just get over yourselves and put out nes/snes/etc. collections on discs like everyone else did even way back in original Playstation days an be done with it already.

Wait...Pokeyman Snap was an on-rails game? And it was literally on-rails?? :O
Yeah it was a rail shooter.

Fun game in dire need of a sequel considering how many PKMN the first game didn't even have, nevermind all the new ones since then!

Too bad you got bottom-paged Pokemaniac, that's a good post. Couple that with the lack of consoles that decided to withdraw after Wii and...yeah, there's not really much more they can do.

Best case scenario, Switch launches with everything currently available on the Wii U already available, instead of drip-fed again. And hopefully, the immediate start of Cube VC.

Reposting for new page:

To address the point about the number of games, a little over a year ago (the most recent version I was able to find quickly is from October 2015 (when DS and N64 were still fairly new additions), so keep in mind this is pretty out of date), some data was compiled on how many 1st party VC games were left that could be released. The short version is, unless Nintendo 1) starts translating a bunch of games that only released in Japan originally, 2) manages to deal with licensing issues, and/or 3) gets more 3rd parties to release their games on the service, there's not a whole lot they can do to bulk up the library all that much for the currently added platforms.

October 2015 data follows:
Right, so here's the current list of first party titles that have yet to be released (focused on Europe). I may have included some titles that are out, as I haven't updated this list in a while

Total eligible first party Nintendo DS games for Virtual Console: 59

So yeah, how have they screwed up for NES & SNES again? I could work a list for GB/GBC too and there will likely be similar low amounts left.

It's a matter of third parties again, and whether or not it'll be worth it for them to bring certain games on. The games need work and testing before release, it's not as simple as packaging the rom and saying it's for sale.

3DS is a weak machine unfortunately so emulation for SNES and GBA isn't possible. N3DS has been able to with homebrew, but Nintendo have moved onto the NX architecture and are planning for that. They've even said it multiple times in regards to the VC. It sucks, but NX is going to be phenomenal for it.

Then how come we just got three N64 Virtual Console games in North America the past month? It just seems like incompetence to me.

I didn't mean that they stopped releasing VC titles on Wii U altogether. They had to release something every so often so as to not leave Wii U owners completely in the cold.

They should offer permanent free entry into their Switch Virtual Catalogue for early Switch adopters (first 3 months).

I've paid so many times for the same exact games. I don't even think I should have to pay any more $1 upgrade fees.

Congrats, that's probably the least informed post I've seen this year so far.
Rating for the different markets it's going to be released makes it already more expensive than the "price tag" you provided.
As for why 1rst party games aren't cheaper, it's either to increase margin or simply to avoid having the customers flock to 1rst parties and have 3rd parties fly away in disgust.
Considering we still see Konami, Capcom and Square Enix releasing games on the service I'd say it's not unreasonable here.
As for the technical work, aside from FX games they do not even consider touching I don't think that's where the cost is.
Unless you're one of these guys considering that when something leave Netflix you blame Netflix over the contract they have with the publishers.

Well, guess it was a attempt then but it's not my ship that is sinking, it's Nintendos. People will prefer the cheaper and more hassle free alternative over the crappy service that Nintendo is giving by comparison if this is seriously the best they can do. They should just sell a software emulator for the device and let people fix the roms themselves, whatever way they choose to do it. If they sold a official and effective SNES or GBA emulator on the 3DS eShop for 60 USD, I'd be happy to shell that out.

And "least informed post I've seen this year so far"? A hyberbole post about a poorly performed service? You must have read my post and my post alone only this year. Sure, there are other costs involved like licensing fees or rating fees (even though ratings should at this point be abolished by how poorly handled and inconsistently handed out they are), but I think if Nintendo sold the VC games for a much cheaper price they would have sold far many more that would probably more than enough covered the costs.

The VC is a joke and I've given it years and years to turn around, and it still fucking sucks.

they'll never get another penny from me for it.

Publishers are also a bit responsible for the state of the VC. Rondo of Blood is available on the Wii shop but not on the WII U eshop for no REASON; While there are some castlevania games on the vc of 3ds, one or two gameboy castlevania games are missing for no valid reason.

I am also pretty confident that some publishers do not want to give a chance or are too lazy to cooperate, otherwise doom games could be on eshop too.

Again the systems Sony and Nintendo offer are hasslefree.
You go to their website, you buy stuffs and it's downloaded on your system.
How much easier can they make it?
It's functional, it's integrated with the side services they provide so there's no weird disconnect between these apps and the other gaming applications.
3DS line (sans n3DS) are too weak for SNES emulation so you're never going to see that.
Granted it was stupid to provide SNES emulation to n3DS users alone, way to make the thing confusing!
And there's a reason they don't let other companies handle the thing, because they would rather let the catalog to rot.
It's easier for everyone to have them handle everything from top to bottom, they handle the legal side and the engineering side and the 3rd parties only have to provide approval.
As Capcom have shown, anyone is free to do the work themselves if they want.
They can even release the finished product on the platform if they want.

There's a lot of work to do to provide old software on new platforms even if you disregard the technical engineering part.
Don't underestimate how much anything related to licensing can cost.
If they sold their product at a cheaper price, they would sell more. Would they see more revenue? if they don't, they're better off selling at a higher price.
And again they have a monopoly on that specific market, NO ONE is selling NES games, NO ONE has done the legwork to make it work.
It's relatively easy to do the engineering part compared to the legal quagmire the games can be.
Seriously good luck trying to convince whoever owns the rights of Titus games to release the stuffs anywhere at all.
It's not as easy as throw a couple of engineers and call it a day.
