Joel from Vinesauce got hacked

This fucking sucks, I love Joel! I largely watch his full Twitch archives so I hadn't noticed anything happening to his main channel... man, fuck.

Maybe he played with fire a bit too much.

Seriously, though, I swear if this has anything to do with his "Destruction" videos... Well, it'd still be a sad situation, but at least there'd be some humor in it.

No it shouldn't, because fucking who?

Not to beat the "'Joel Vinesauce' is a 10 second Google search, and posting 'Who?' in a thread about someone you know nothing seems callous" horse to death, but... that. It's a post that adds nothing to the conversation, unless the poster's actively trying to undermine something they don't know/are pretending they don't know about, when an actual discussion between people that do know/care about the situation could be held instead. It's like that "I don't like thing" comic, which has been banned, as far as I remember.

Also, the response has proven this news is threadworthy; out of all of the streamers out there, Joel's one of the bigger/better ones. I mean, I know next to nothing about Overwatch, but I'm not going to act like updates to the game aren't threadworthy.

While I've never heard of him, this is pretty shitty and actually quite scary. This is some peoples' (possibly side) careers they're ruining.

Man this sucks, I love Joel. Subscribe to his Twitch and everything. I think the part that's bothering me most is that him and the Vinesauce crew have been completely quiet about it. I get that they don't want to escalate the situation but some kind of update would be nice. I hope they're not just ignoring it and hoping that he'll go away. Apparently last night or maybe two nights ago the guy got into one of Vinny's streams on Joel's Twitch account and started mass banning everyone. It's pretty bad.

If you sub to Joel's Twitch I would recommend unsubbing for now, since we don't know if the monthly money is going to go to this "Towel" guy or not.

If Youtube doesn't already, they need to be able to restore videos from their end in case something like this happens.

They should also allow users to restore content for a certain amount of time, like a month or so. I know that when you delete a video, the URL and metadata still exists for a while (like months), so that makes me wonder if the videos aren't actually deleted right away from their servers.

Why would people just immediately unsubscribe? That's unfortunate.

I would assume they'd unsubscribe immediately so they don't have to deal with the hacker doing god knows what with the channel as well as hoping the real one eventually comes back as a separate, new channel. That or they saw and gave no fucks and just clicked unsubscribe. People are fickle sometimes :\

It might be the people who aren't as familiar with Joel's channel seeing someone named "Towel" come up in their subscriptions uploading hip hop music and assuming they followed someone by mistake.

Man I love Joel, he's the only Twitch streamer that I actually watch. Hope he can sort this out soon, this fucking sucks!

What's baffling me though is that this has been going on for a few days now and Joel hasn't said anything as far as I know. Like what's going on, has he just abandoned the channel?

I'm not sure if that McDouche guy really got hacked or if he's being sarcastic or making a joke...

Agreed. Why doesn't YouTube have a recycling bin or something?

Yeah, it's hard to figure anything out with Lyle. He's currently live on Shadman's Twitch and I asked in chat and got no response. So who knows.

Here's Vinny's stance on the situtation:

I pretty much agree with him. There's not much that can or should be done except to let Youtube do the rest.

Reading that it seem the point of entry was another service hacked 2 years ago, and the youtube accounts affected NOW had the same username/password as what they had on that 2 year old hacked service.

Or am I misunderstanding it?

There was an Xsplit info leak a couple years back and it's been confirmed this was the point of entry, yes. Both Joel and KY from Vinesauce were affected parties.

Surely they knew of this when it happened? That's why you always change the most important passwords after a breach of any kind, especially for something you use. Yikes...

Why would anyone hack a Vinesauce streamer? It's basically impossible to hate them. No subscriber jingles, no donation callouts, no twitch drama. They have chillest possible streams.

Really fucked up. Hopefully Joel doesn't have too much trouble building his subscribers back up.

Yeah, they should have changed passwords 2 years ago, and turn on 2 step too then.

Bummer. Was really hoping this was some over elaborate joke from Joel for 200 subs or something like that but this all proves it's real.

I feel really bad for Joel since I can imagine him taking this really hard. To me it always felt like he put a lot of passion into his videos(even if they were really dumb). He's someone who works hard to get other people to laugh.

If you're out there Joel, I'm holding out for you.

Thank god i have 2 step for a long long time i also changed my password just to be sure after xsplit got hacked and also i got 2 step on twitter on well almost every account that supports it people need to wake up and not slack anymore.

Heard about it the last time Vinny played Mario Maker. That's a really terrible situation, and I hope it gets fixed. Poor Joel.

God damn, last thing I saw the other night while this Towel dipshit still had control of his account Joel's videos were still up. Same guy's apparently targeted a few other people like the 'Your Movie Sucks' dude. Dunno if it's a script-kiddie from /b/ just doing it for shits and giggles or someone with a serious grudge with a ton of different YouTube 'e-celebs' but whatever it is it's pretty awful.

Don't care for YMS much anymore but the Vinesauce guys are seriously good people. Sucks to see them get attacked like this.

Hackers are dicks, but don't worry guys, the videos are retrievable by YouTube. They'll be back, it'll just take a little time.

Speaking from experience, btw.

Never heard of this guy, but that sucks that all (or most) of his videos are gone now.

I plan on setting up my own youtube channel, so I guess I should probably back that shit up.

I'm so sad for Joel. I'm a big fan of his content and it sucks to see this go down. Whats weirder is that he hasn't mentioned anything on twitter or made a twitch video talking about how he is dealing with it all. I hope he is doing alright.

2 years without changing passwords is a bit insane. I rotate my passwords roughly every 6 months with anything that has access to important site related stuff.

That being said, obviously feel bad at times for him, but chillax a bit. YouTube CAN recover deleted vidoes and has done so in the past when accounts were compromised. So he should get everything back. The only thing that really hurts is all the lost subs. Nothing can be done about that.

But I am sure he'll land on his feet.

Vinny on the Vinesauce reddit more or less said they're relying on Youtube to recover Joel's lost videos. I think the bigger deal is going to be him recovering from all the lost subscriptions since the channel is likely Joel's primary income nowadays.

Was it only YMS and McDouchebag's twitters that got hacked? Or are their actual channels now compromised like Joel's?

This would have been solved by either not having the same password for everything, changing passwords when you know a service you use have been compromised, using the two-factor authentication or using a password manager. Just one single common sense password management technique would have been enough.

It sucks for him, and of course I shouldn't be victim blaming, but this was completely avoidable.
