Jonathan Pie - Why The Left is Responsible For This Stunning Loss

Not open for further replies.
As a companion piece, here is a fantastic article from CBS about the smugness of the media and how it blinded them to what was happening.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/comment...ness-of-the-press-presidential-election-2016/

I'm reading this article (since I don't want to watch the video at work) and while I get the author's point:
Journalists love mocking Trump supporters. [...] We dismiss them as racists and sexists.
BECAUSE THEY ARE RACISTS AND SEXISTS.

This is something that I think we all really need to push back against. Just because the country has decided to elect a racist, sexist, homophobic bigot does not and should not make racism, sexism, or homophobia acceptable. People's racist views are not suddenly valid.

Unfortunately the left isn't going to listen and is instead going to double down on making more enemies out of the centre over the next 4 years and look dumbfounded when it happens all over again.

In politics you have to always be winning votes no matter what so you can squeak in the few policies you actually do care about. Sitting pretty on moral superiority and whatnot doesn't work when the population which is out for itself (and always will be) is feeling poorly done to. If you don't create a better counter-narrative, you're fucked when someone elses just steamrolls across the voter landscape.

Every fucking internet argument over appropriation of culture in fantasy novels or whatever the fuck will always push one or more fence sitter all the way over into the right wing nutter camp because the endless bleating has become maddening. Erosion of racism and sexism is a long generational process, not something you can win with enough swift and cut-throat sassy tweets. Blunt Internet "I'm Right, Fuck You" trauma has failed and the era of At Length Persuasion must begin. Sure it's harder, but thats what it means to ACTUALLY be the better side.

Aaaand that is what they complained about in the video. Sweeping generalizations about a populous based on a vocal, potentially minority sample size.

There's no forgiving voting for the alternative. Sorry.
The same can be said for us. Let's get real. I'd say voting for a dishonest, crooked person who has proven time and time again how she doesn't have the interest of the people in the forefront of her mind, into being the candidate for President.

But WE don't see that as unforgivable do we?? Hell, most of us couldn't bring ourselves into full-on admitting hat she was even he LESSER evil! But Bernie supporters should be forgiving of all of that after Democrats FUCKING lost it all.

All this monday morning quarterbacking...When 95-90 percent of the people bitching thought Hillary had this in the bag.

If Bernie had lost against Trump everyone would be saying "WHY THE FUCK DID YOU RUN ANOTHER CORBYN?????"

We lost, lets move the fuck on and think rationally how to get the orange prick out of office in 4 years instead of 8.

Feel free to try to equate supposed corruption and lack of interest in the people to open racism and sexism.

For fucks sakes some of you are still doing it. Unbelievable. You're saying a Trump voter is a sexist or a homophobe or this or that...that's not necessarily true at all. SOME are, of course. I'd bet not the majority though. Get it through your heads. Generalizations like that are just blindly ignorant.

This ignores how comically large the scope of what liberals call "bigotry", or at least "problematic", has grown.
"Bigotry" in air quotes?

The President Elect of the United States bragged about sexual assault on tape, called Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers, and advocated nationwide voter suppression.

If anything, this country just confirmed the most pessimistic views of the social left. You don't get to say shit about SJWs when this country elected a guy endorsed by the KKK.

Bernie Supporters: Do not take this out on HillaryGAF and PoliGAF. For one, you do not beat someone is down.
Secondly it was not pleasent when people were so angry at Bernie during the primaries. Do not make the mistake of repeating that.

In hindsight and with pride before the fall and outrage and disappointment and when you lose when it is a sure thing, there is a lot we can be angry at Clinton and the DNC and the Democratic establishment. However, a fair reading of all conventional wisdom, a lot of the data and history told us that democratic establishment candidates win with more money, experience.
No Hillary supporter here on GAF put their money behind her because of malice or because they wanted this. Nobody could have predicted comey, the FBI or problems in her campaigns. And very few people realized that voter turnout would be like this.
This is historic. This is the first time someone from the outside has taken complete control. The republicans were played, the democrats were played. The media was played, and a majority of the electoral college was played. People thought that these white voters were not in play.
To say this is a painful lesson to learn is underselling it. Living on the other side of the world I can tell you; Nobody here can quite believe it. It makes no sense. We're going to think about this election of the rest of our lives. It dwarfs 2000, because in that- At least Bush was seen as a center-right candidate. We all acknowledged that it was what it was.
We all do what we do with the wisdom we have. HillGAF are no different from Bernie Redditors. We are colored by our fears, and the way we view solutions. Everyone does the best they can. We make mistakes. The left makes mistakes.
What do we do now? What do we do here in Europe? We have elections coming up in 2019, and if we keep this course, fascism will have a much stronger foothole. It will be comparable to the levels of European fascism as it existed in the 1930s.
This is not hyperbole either. The 2014 elections empowered many, and they are particularly thrilled with Trump. Duterte is happy. Putin is happy. Le Pen is happy. Jobbik is happy. National Front is happy.

I can't watch, but it's more the fault of Democrats for nominating Hillary than the entire left-wing being responsible. Bernie would have been a perfect choice, such a shame. With Hillary and Trump more often than not I had a feeling the question was "how would you rather die, drowning or shot point-blanc?".

Democrats chose Hillary Clinton. Not the DNC. Democrats. Giving the nomination to Bernie Sanders would ironically do the very thing that his supporters complained about: suppress millions of (mostly minority) votes to instead award the nomination to someone they felt was more suitable.

Agreed 100%.

Initiating any conversation with 'hey, so you know that you're a racist fuckwad, right?' isn't going to get us anywhere.

They voted for jobs. Does this mean that they tacitly condone racism? Probably. They're voting for their own self-interests... Which is all everyone ever does. Perhaps some understanding as to why will make it easier to discuss in the future?

For fucks sakes some of you are still doing it. Unbelievable. You're saying a Trump voter is a sexist or a homophobe or this or that...that's not necessarily true at all. SOME are, of course. I'm not calling them anything. I am saying they are fine with racism and sexism and I'm sorry that hurts their widdle feelings. No, not sorry.

Hillary Clinton was the Democratic nominee because Democrats voted for her. She was the most popular candidate. More popular than all of her opponents.

Also votes are still being counted. Turnout is already higher than 2012, and Clinton's popular vote lead over Trump is extending.

I think the amount of votes were influenced by the amount of support by the DNC. If the DNC had remained more neutral and not backed their establishment candidate, things *might* have looked differently (But this is just tales of my ass). That is why the "Failure of the Left" is that they promoted and propped up an incredibly bad candidate. Sanders had his own problems with falling flat on his face when it came to intersectionality and race issues (probably exacerbated by the lack of support / sabotage by the DNC)

Regardless of why she won and the amount of votes, the point is that the system isn't optimal in allowing voters to be represented politically. Ranked voting could be one solution to the problem. A much more complicated solution is to demolish the two party system (as well as the electoral college of course).

Anyway, it is what it is and there's not much use to pointing fingers. But the take-away is that neoliberal center-right candidate with a stained history of working with the institutions that has caused social inequality is not the solution to the world's current problems. The Left need to mobilize its voters and potential voters by offering up a candidate that doesn't just offer up more of the same milquetoast corporate liberalism that Clinton so perfectly represented.

Some still hold onto the belief that if you yell enough and call people enough names they will just fold and come to your side. It's sort of like the "safe space" and "trigger warning" battles in schools. Yell enough and ignore other points of view and hope that you can shame them to your point of view.

There is obviously no need to listen to anyone else. It works best in an Echo Chamber.

We're not at the point where we can just ignore the racists' and sexists' numerical advantage in the electoral college. Admitting to such, and strategizing around it, does not actually validate their views. It merely recognizes them as a real problem rather than something that can just be swept under the rug with no issue.

I mean the push back already began with this election cycle, if not earlier in the latter half of Obama's presidency.

And it was a mistake, strategically speaking. It turns out being morally right does not win elections.

Aaaand that is what they complained about in the video. Sweeping generalizations about a populous based on a vocal, potentially minority sample size.

Unfortunately, the populous overwhelmingly voted for a candidate who ran on racism. That makes them at least somewhat racist in my eyes.

That doesn't necessarily mean they don't have legitimate troubles or concerns. But if someone thinks that crime in cities has been steadily increasing due to the BLM movement decreasing police effectiveness, or that Mexico is going to pay for a wall that already exists along parts of the border and has proven enormously ineffective, they do not deserve to be taken seriously, because their views are both contradicted by reality and inherently steeped in racism.

Don't agree at all.

Clinton wasn't the best

but the people that did vote for Trump who are probably not racist or sexist... Are fine with sexism and racism. They are and always will be until the denounce their vote for that man.

It feels like whatever they would have done, people would criticize it. They've voted for Trump now, so they're fine with sexism and racism. Had they voted for Hillary, they'd be fine with a two-face politician known for switching stances as often as I change my underwear. Had they not voted at all, they would've gotten hammered for not using their democratic rights, nay, duties.

Fact of the matter is, both candidates were not optimal to say the least, and frankly people apparently thought Trump was the "lesser of two evils", how weird that even sounds. I can't help but imagine if nominating Bernie would've made any positive difference. My glass ball says yes.

I'm 30 seconds in and don't know how much longer I can last...this guy is obnoxious

okay further in...sure, it was Clinton's fault that a bunch of racists voted for a fellow racist!

"The Left" is not responsible for the nomination of Hillary Clinton, which resulted in a low voter turnout. WE VOTED FOR FUCKING BERNIE. He won 23 primaries thanks to our votes. This guy screaming about trigger warnings and safe spaces which has fuck all to do with anything can get rekt.

isn't saying that every single person who voted for trump is fine with sexism and racism like saying that every single person who voted for hillary is fine with blowing up innocent brown people in the middle east with drone strikes? or a no-fly zone in syria? or corporate money in politics? etc

Feel free to try to equate supposed corruption and lack of interest in the people to open racism and sexism.
Feel free to DISCUSS TO ME how either one isn't terrible for the American people at ANY capacity. In both, we all suffer. One of those things is subtle and a slow burn, while the other is immediate and in your face.

And this is the problem, and you're exhibiting EXACTLY what's said in the video, and what's worse is, you're trying to troll out of me some response to try and make me look and/or feel like I'm dismissing racism and sexism and I'm just going to say fuck that.

You're doing exactly one of the things that had Hillary fail.
isn't saying that every single person who voted for trump is fine with sexism and racism like saying that every single person who voted for hillary is fine with blowing up innocent brown people in the middle east with drone strikes? or a no-fly zone in syria? or corporate money in politics? etc
EXACTLY my point

Okay people, did people vote for Trump because of bigotry or economics?

If economics, the Democrats can easily come back in the senate and house because of all the shit that will happen under a completely Republican controlled government in the next few years. That's the pretty obvious game plan going forward.

If bigotry... Then stop pretending it's not about bigotry. Stop recoiling in horror when we call a spade a spade.

The left is responsible for this stunning loss because instead of actually standing up to bigotry and hate in a tangible way by voting, they stood up to intangibles like "corruption" by not voting.

Yeah, because then when some crazy law get passed that negatively affect minorities, or someone like me will need to live in a state of panic to not get stop because of the color of my skin because it was made a law, then these same people that are not Racist or Homophobic and voted Trump will say from the comfort of their own privilege "That's so sad" as then keep enjoying their life.

The mental gymnastics trying to plant some false equivalency of Clinton and Trump is insane.

This is not just the campaigns fault, or the medias fault, or the liberals fault. This is the fault of every one of us that thought that if we just voted it was enough. We thought that our vote was all we needed to do. We got cozy in our bubble thinking there was NO FUCKING WAY that this country could elect this man.We bought into the narrative we came up with back in 2008 and 2012 that we Democrats who in reality are the majority of this country had the White House on LOCK due to the demographic shift. We took for granted what got us the White House in 2008 and again in 2012. Well here is your wake up call.Welcome to reality.

Unfortunately, the populous overwhelmingly voted for a candidate who ran on racism. That makes them at least somewhat racist in my eyes.

That doesn't necessarily mean they don't have legitimate troubles or concerns. No. Only about 27% of Americans, and Hillary won the popular vote.

We're not at the point where we can just ignore the racists' and sexists' numerical advantage in the electoral college. Admitting to such, and strategizing around it, does not actually validate their views. It merely recognizes them as real people (and a real problem) rather than something that can just be swept under the rug with no issue.

Okay, but the article I'm referring to written by a reporter critiquing the "smugness" of the press for not taking Trump's supporters seriously.

It is not the media's job to take people's insane views seriously. It is the media's job to report on the actual reality's of our world. If there is a common misconception, it is the media's job to correct it.

The media, in my view, did FAR TOO LITTLE of this during the election, so saying they should be doing more, in my eyes, is wrong.

No. Only about 27% of Americans, and Hillary won the popular vote.
Good point. Even more reason why crazy racists who ignore reality should not be pandered to by the press.

Unfortunately the left isn't going to listen and is instead going to double down on making more enemies out of the centre over the next 4 years and look dumbfounded when it happens all over again.

Pretty much.

Then I disagree with your eyes completely, and such labels do more to harm your position than anything else. Labeling someone as racist for siding with a candidate that promises to help them out of their perceived financial quagmire does not make someone racist. Refusing to vote for someone supporting policies that take money from their pockets is not racist. Yes, at least some of Trump's rhetoric was racist. Much of it was not.

i copied this from another thread hours ago and forget who posted it originally, so i apologize to the op for not giving credit
but

Before someone tries the "all trump supporters aren't racist, the reason you don't get that is why he won" argument regarding this picture.

We know.

You're not the guy with the Swastika tattoo.

You're not the right wing fat cat with money bulging out of his pockets.

You're not the KKK klansman in the white hood.

You're not the one holding up the confederate flag that stands for states right to slavery.

You're not the guy wearing the "FUCK SJWs!" T-shirt.

You're not the Vice President elect who believes you can electrocute the gay out of a person.

No, you are not. We understand that completely.

You're the people standing in between them, holding hands with them and bolstering them, because you decided that emboldening them is the price you're willing to pay to enrich yourself

You CANNOT deny that.

You CANNOT run away from that.

You agreed with YOURSELF that you would stand on the same side as these people because you believed it was right for you.

Why can't you admit that out in the open?

This is such a bullshit argument.

Clinton Being an unlikable candidate? Naw
Clinton's campaign fucking up? naw
DNC fucking up? Naw
Voter turnout being low? Naw
Liberals calling out bigotry? That must be it!!!!

Fuck people trying to pin the blame on liberals rightfully calling out bigots as the cause of Trump winning. It's honestly one of the most annoying arguments being made on this site post election. There are a variety of factors as to why Clinton lost, but people calling out Trump and his supporters on their shit is at the bottom of that.

Truth. It's getting ridiculous at this point.

I think the amount of votes were influenced by the amount of support by the DNC. Well I'm glad you can at least admit you're pulling shit out of nowhere. I'm really growing tired of the never ending feuding over the 2016 Democratic primary, but I'll just end by saying that Sanders excelled the most in caucus states, the least democratic process in the primary. The idea that Sanders was somehow cheated just doesn't carry water.

And on a note more related to the thread: why is the onus always on the left to be nice? Donald Trump just became the fuckig president. You think his kindness got him there? Is the GOP known for their soft touch?

Bernie Supporters: Do not take this out on HillaryGAF and PoliGAF. For one, you do not beat someone is down.

First, Hillgaf or the people who demonized Sanders supporters must apologize for their behavior during the primaries and after.

If they don't do that, there can be no reconciliation.

I didn't post much here during primary season but I agreed with the prevailing view that Hilary was the better candidate.

I know that I was weak minded. I bought into the DNC and Clinton's relentless media campaign that characterized Sanders supporters as sexist, racist and naive. I am sorry Bernie bros. I'm sorry I bought into the media bullshit. I should have gone out and fought for Sanders.

Feel free to DISCUSS TO ME how either one isn't terrible for the American people at ANY capacity. In both, we all suffer. One of those things is subtle and a slow burn, while the other is immediate and in your face.

You're doing exactly one of the things that had Hillary fail.

Well it appears your smart enough to say that you don't want to equate the two because you know they're not the same.

"Bigotry" in air quotes?

If anything, this country just confirmed the most pessimistic views of the social left. You don't get to say shit about SJWs when this country elected a guy endorsed by the KKK.

You do get to say shit about SJWs when SJWs have trivialized real problems by lecturing people about "microaggressions" and "manspreading". Or protesting at museums and getting yoga classes shut down because of "cultural appropriation". Lots of people just don't care about the awful things Trump has said because words like bigotry, racism, sexism etc. have become so devalued.

isn't saying that every single person who voted for trump is fine with sexism and racism like saying that every single person who voted for hillary is fine with blowing up innocent brown people in the middle east with drone strikes? or a no-fly zone in syria? or corporate money in politics? etc

Yep, but who's to say that Trump and his fascists aren't just an intensification of the same imperialistic policies?

For fucks sakes some of you are still doing it. Unbelievable. You're saying a Trump voter is a sexist or a homophobe or this or that...that's not necessarily true at all. SOME are, of course. I'd bet not the majority though. Get it through your heads. Generalizations like that are just blindly ignorant.

They're stubborn and ignorant. They wont change, just like you wont get that odd racist, sexist or homophobic Trump voter to change. Extreme sides of both arguments that are just as bad as each other when it comes to listening to reason.

I don't think this is primarily why Clinton lost this particular election.

I do think it is probably the primary reason for the slowly ceding ground in what appears to be the current wave of culture war.

I see legacyzero continues to inform himself with more dubious video sources.

"It's almost as if the political acumen of Beyonce and JayZ count for nothing!"

As a piece of satire it's very funny and spot on for pointing out the absurdities of the current "debate".

For those unaware, here is the wikipedia article on Jonathan Pie:
Strange how the whole thread seems to gloss over this.

I don't disagree and I appreciate the conversation even though it's just speculation on my side. Don't forget to read my edit. :)

The DNC is to blame.
The people who stayed home are to blame.
The people who voted for Trump are to blame.

People calling out bigotry and stupidity are NOT.
