Journey (PSN) - thatgamecompany's new game!!! (Game Releases in Spring 2012)

Everything I've read about this game makes me happy beyond believe.
This sounds exactly like my type of game. :D

Sony would be mad to not try and acquire That Game Company, or at least try to extend their exclusivity deal.
Their games perfectly fit the PS3's game library and are of the highest quality.

Day 1. I love how this game beats pretty much every title I'm going to buy in the future in terms of...well, everything. An exception would be The Last Guardian, but really, this looks brilliant. Thatgamecompany really is a breath of fresh air in a sea of sameness.

I wonder if attending press were encouraged to be vague in their descriptions. There's a point where the writer says the statue communicated with the player character but doesn't even say it was verbally or in what other way? It's also strange that he never even tried to give any opinion on what was on display, describe how things animate, the kind of stuff that he must know people are curious about.

Wonderkins, why were you hoping ot was written by Brad?
Sorry for the late response!

I think highly of all of the Giant Bomb guys, but feel that this game is more attuned to Brad's sensibilities. I would listen to any of their opinions, though. Brad just seems the guy, out of all of them, that likes these more conceptual style of games.

As per the vagueness of the preview, it seems the team itself isn't totally locked into what they want from the game. Also, maybe the press is being sensitive to how easily a game like this can be "spoiled," so to speak. Not sure, but a fair observation on your part.

Playing it offline would mean no ability to meet anyone, so no ability to choose whether to continue alone or to go with the stranger you met.

I would love to see a system similar to Demon's Souls.

Still not sure what to make of that since she put offline in quotes.....

Offline means wandering alone. You can also allow others to wander with you and you can change the connectivity on the fly. So glad that this has online! :D

Oh and since there is no voicechat, I do hope there are other forms of communication. If not, I hope they have nailed the concept of hiking to the extend that everyone can understand where to go and communication is not needed.

No, I'm wondering if you can play Journey offline, as in not signing onto PSN to play the game. Say PSN is down or your internet connection isn't working, would you be able to play Journey? Does the game require you to be online at all times even if you want to wander alone?

I get that, and I can see what they're trying to do I think. For example, in the two weeks I gave WoW, the only thing that had any charm to me was when I and another total strange happened to be heading to the same place, and did a few quests together without ever communicating, it was pretty incredible, a lot more 'touching' than any multiplayer I've ever played. However, I also can see the attraction of playing alone. I would like to be able to both, and I don't play online all that much. I don't think it will require a PSN connection at all, but if it does, it'll be a little bit of a let down.

I was talking to friends about what SotC online would have been like about a year ago and we came to the conclusion it'd essentially be this game. No way of communicating with anyone in the world, no keyboards or voice chat, nothing to distract or upset anyone. A lot of people are going to rip it apart, but I think it sounds wonderful.

Looks incredible. The visuals are amazing of course, but the thing that interests me the most is reading Jenova Chen's inspiration/"mission statement" for the game. There aren't too many games (outside of maybe the survival horror genre) that evoke feelings of powerlessness, yet it's probably one of the strongest emotions that games can pull off successfully. If this game can truly capture that, it'll be really exciting.

Agreed, reading that really hit a tone with me and exactly what he's trying to pursue with this game, definitely keeping an eye out for it, probably day one considering every other title has been. :D

ThatGameCompany is the PSN equivalent of Team ICO now as far as I'm concerned after playing Flower and seeing Journey

These guys just absolutely nail the emotive style and aesthetic of these games like few other developers can do.

@StuBurns: You just made me think about a SotC online.
I completely agree with you, that it should ot have any form of chat, much like this journey, but think about a 4 player co-op with 4 guys(each personalized)trying to take down a Colossus!
Comunicating just by screaming(like when you call Agro)with the need to cooperate, cause you should, like, hit 4 different weak spots at the same time.
Or 2 distracting the Colossus while the other 2 climb up on him(granted, it should be much more challenging).
This, plus all the exploration part, similar to this Journey, where you just listen to the wind and eat a fruit from a tree, while the horses drink to a near pond of water (no points or health regain or shit, just for the sake of doing it!)-- they could also put in some instuments like an ocarina(or similar)that you can play pressing a button(no onscreen prompt or complicated stuff) much like the coordinated singing in this Journey, it would be magical.

I just jizz'd in my pants.

it's good to see people nicking the Demon's Souls online experience. it was the best thing about the hour I spent with the game.

I wish this company wasn't named after a works once type of joke. They're so cool.

What's wrong with you man, did you bump this thread to personally troll me. So much wrong with this post, smh

I decided to edit that out but I guess you caught me red-handed: I had no fun with Demon's Souls.

the screenshot look really cool, saw them for the first time today.

^ next year, poster above the poster above me.

any timeframe for this amazing game?
It's best to just forget about it. The wait for Flower was bad.. for me anyways. I don't even wait to know the release date for this game, I wait it soo bad.

in the Journey post at Indiegames Blog, there are 171 comments, many of them resulting from Flytrap(XBLIG) creater going insane and accusing thatgamecompany of stealing his ideas. He also believes all the other comments are made personally by Jenova Chen and his PR guy to try to make him seem paranoid.

threadworthy maybe? it's pretty funny
