Journey Reviews Thread

But for those who play games to explore strange lands, see beautiful sights and to immerse themselves – for however brief a time – in a new world, Journey is perfect.

This was always what I was expecting from Journey. A little disappointed it's so short but it sounds like they've nailed the atmosphere, which is what TGC do best.

I fear that a lot of people are going to give this game shit for its length. While there has been progress over the last few years, gamers still somehow seem to prefer quantity over quality.

I spent 2 hours just playing around in the beta
It's all about how you choose to play the experience really, if you're rushing from point A to point B then it'll probably seem too short (and you wouldn't really be understanding the nature of the game)
Unfortunately there will always be people like that

Yeah that seems to be a theme of the other active thread on Journey. It'll be interesting to see how well this does. I think critically it seems that people aren't knocking it too much.

I also spent around 2-3 hours in the beta... BUT when I played the full game I completed it just under 2 hours. The game drives your through it, you really do not want to stop and explore.. you want to finish the Journey.

I'm sure I'll enjoy this. But I'm pretty sure the pontification by reviewers and people claiming that it's some higher gaming experience will be vomit inducing.

only an hour long so not too late, hohoho

zing!
Sterling in particular has always decried the quantity over quality argument, so it should be a good one :)

Seeing how codes went out last week, you think they would have asked them earlier if they didn't get a voucher.

He probably just wasn't aware that the embargo was going up this early. I imagine everyone else was informed when they received their codes.

My SEN account is ready... and all those review make teh wait even harder.. just like there is nothing like flower out there , i hope journey is just "different" while inspiring ....

Well, it's fair criticism. I'm among those that actually prefer shorter games, depending on the genre, but there is a point where too little quantity can't survive even a ton of quality. Obviously, where that point lies is all relative to the person, but it's silly to think it shouldn't be an issue at all.

I think the sad thing about Journey is how the experience will vary as time goes on. With it being so short and having little reason to return, the online space will be a ghost town a couple of months down the road, so it'll lose a bit of its magic.

It kind of makes the game coming out more of an event than a release. Like a show that's in town for one night only, you have to buy your ticket now to truly experience it. Sure, you could always always watch footage of the show later, but it's not the same, and your kids will never know what it was like.

Fixed

You can always come back to relive the magic when the game drops in price in a year.

I'm so excited for this game... years of anticipation for three hours of exploration. It feels weird.

Considering its minimal multiplayer requirements are for 2 people playing concurrently, I think it'll actually last quite awhile. Especially as the rarity of encountering a fellow traveller with incentivize the experience.

Its not MAG!

Maybe. I think the upside to the way Journey's online system works is no matter how few people are playing, in theory you might always be able to find a partner. You may not find a new journeyer around every corner, but when you do get matched up, you can just stick together.

So it's short then? I'm a bit surprised, I thought it was going to be a much longer game considering the open world deal/feeling. I didn't really read any info or anything on the beta though.

Oh well, I enjoyed Flower immensely for what it was.

Multiplayer games are designed to keep you playing, Journey isn't. The multiplayer will be as barren in a month.

I'm still having a hard time figuring out what this game is supposed to be and how co-op enhances it so much. The couple reviews I read are especially vague about the gameplay and tend to just yap on about art.

Does anyone know more details about the co-op? Are there certain platforms/puzzles you can only complete with another player assisting? Are there any competitive elements present?

Agreed. Quantity is usually a factor in quality in my case. I'm sure this game is fantastic, but the short play time makes me a bit uneasy. I understand there are secrets, but I can't imagine this game providing a lot of replay value. After waiting all this time I would have expected more than a few hours of gameplay, however good it may be.

Either way, I can't wait to try it out.

I don't really care how brief of a game this is, as I view it as a $15.00 experience to just kick back and relax with for a dreamy change of pace that you will want to return to time and again in order to relive the wonder of. A buy for me.

looking forward to this, but the game name just makes me wish there was a new Longest Journey game coming out. :(

No, this is the first time i see anything about this game.
So.. seems great. LOved flower.

It's a really really great game. Personally not up to the levels of Flower, but it's still one of the best PSN games out there. If you enjoyed Flower this will be a joyful experience.

Why? Do you seriously think that in a month there will be a single person playing at once?
That's not how match matching works. Just because there would be two people in the world in Journey at the same time doesn't mean they'd be playing together. For a start, they have to be in the same physical location in the game, it doesn't warp you to people. If the game is about two and half hours long, it's probably made up of about fifteen distinct levels, maybe more (the beta was three, and was about half an hour long), so straight away you don't need two, you need like seventeen people playing for two of them to be even viable, assuming their connection is good enough. Will that happen occasionally? Of course, but the chances are going to be low, and the drop off will be significant.

TGC have already said they designed the game knowing the multiplayer wouldn't be long lived and the game has to be fully worthwhile without it.

Also worth pointing out, I think, is that while the core appeal of the game may be similar to Flower's, the experience probably differs in many regards. Depending on what you want from your games, or the types of emotions it evokes, you may like Journey a good deal more.

What, it's out allready?.. wow, for me this game just came out of nowhere...

Not out yet. It gets released to the public on March 13th.
