"June Xbox One software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth."

So this 10% would be silicon that was actually locked through the use of software? Is this a shader core and eSRAM bandwidth that since launch had been occupied by Kinect and Snap.

So this proves that gaming consoles should just be gaming consoles, unless its feature like DVD or Blu-ray playback, which has no affect on performance of any chipset dedicated to gaming.

Interested to see what sort of graphical improvements this brings to the console's games and whether to not it rectifies the resolution woes. I'm guessing not, as from what I've read they're more to do with the Esram limitations, but you never know. They may find some sort of rendering work around.

If it brings the norm closer to 900p/1080p than 792p/900p then I'd be plenty pleased with the update.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one seeing a turtle on wheels taking a dump...

The kinect wasn't eating anything.

The host OS held a 10% gpu time slice away from the game portion of the xbox.

MS probably did this because they didn't know how much would actually be needed under real world conditions.

Now they are giving it back (or a portion)

Eurogamer says it's giving back all of the 10% so now developers can use the gpu 100% instead of 90%?
Perhaps read a little farther.
Basically optimized it to the point that they don't need the gpu reserve anymore is the way i understand it? Awesome optimization on their part if the games that use 100% of the gpu can still use the snap feature.

Awesome. Is that enough to get to 900p games to 1080p and 792p games to 900p?

Not really, but this should be enough to get games to run at a much more stable framerate, or maybe bump the resolution just a little (like 892p to 900p or something).

8% isn't that much in the big picture, but considering what a lot of devs. have accomplished already with games such as Wolfenstein, or The Crew, this should defiantly help teams push higher resolutions, that are closer and closer to the PS4 counterpart of the game.

Hoping Cod AW is 900p on Xbone with locked 60fps.

^ I'll believe that shit when it actually works on something I can play.

"Committed to Kinect."

Super glad I paid extra for that "integral" piece of equipment.

Then again, it's nice that devs can eke out a little more from the machine. I'm just a bit salty, I guess.

Xbone has 8 GB of flash ram

so 16 GB + (32 MB)

Take that

Lol, this is just getting too funny!
I hope that yall do realize that the extra 256 MB or RAM in the PS4, and the 8GB of flash RAM in the XB1 are not used for games...
They are used to aid the operating system, and help the console boot up faster.

So how does this work? What happens to people who have Kinect and want to play future titles with this "10% bandwidth"? What happens to the games previously released?
Games previously released: likely nothing.
People who have Kinect: NOTICE: this game will disable your Kinect's camera features.
Edit: just my guesses, guys. It seems like the sensible way to handle it.

So devs can disable kinect functionality if they want to? Maybe even disable snapping?

And how the heck did they increase the bandwidth?

How much performance does one typically gain from a driver update on a desktop PC?

It depends from game to game. Some games, through the lifetime of a GPU and Driver updates see substantial improvements. I am not sure that we can draw the same method of PC gains with drivers than was MS and in part what Sony is doing.

Like I said, I am not that techie to know the inner workings or the systems, but I do have common sense and historical proof of being a gamer since the Atari 2600 that any console see's improvements through improved dev tools and devs that learn the hardware more and more as they work on it. In this case, we all know that some of the One's resources were being used for Kinect and it looks like some of this is going to be given to devs in addition to other improvements in tools to make things better.

Now better to you or me or anyone is going to be subjective. I doubt anyone can say today that these new tools automatically means 900p standard or 1080p standard. Until someone shows us a game with the tools applied and a game without we will not truly know. For me, I hope this brings the ability for devs to apply better IQ techniques to games. Watch Dogs is good example. While it is 792p on the One, it looks almost exactly like the 900p PS4 version. I have both systems and I have WD on both and in my eyes they are extremely close. If this allows a dev to keep the 792p res, but have more aggressive AA and AF then to me that is a win.

The bottom line is seems that this update will give devs a little more power and hopefully we can get a demonstration of that one day.

LOL. Keep dreaming there, buddy.

You think that Sony & ICE Team are just resting on their laurels & not improving the SDK on PS4 as well?

Yep, soon Sony will announce how they're removing the 10% required for PS camera, just wait and see.

/s

PS4 has a hardware advantage, but in addition, there was a 10% added gap due to Kinect requirements, that 10% gap has now been removed permanently. PS4 never had this burden, so there's no direct answer for Sony. Sure, they can optimize further, but so can MS, in other words, the 10% is a permanent gain (that shouldn't have been lacking to begin with) and a 10% closure in the gap whether significant or not, but to claim that its nothing is just pushing it and just plain raining on someone's parade for no good reason.

Not only that, but by all accounts the XB1 development kit and drivers were behind where they should have been until just recently, so those gains are also being added to the mix.

As an owner of both the XBox One and PS4, I personally believe this news means we will see a couple of more graphical effects here and there, but not much in the way of a resolution or frame rate bump.

I realize I am simplifying it for the sake of my example, but lets just say this new "8%" translated to 8% more frames per second. If a game is running at 60 frames per second, that means it would now be 64.8 frames per second. Really not much at all in the grand scheme of things.

Again, I realize that is not how things actually work, and that it is an incredibly complex process. My point was simply just to demonstrate that 8% is really not that huge of an increase if you simply just go by the numbers.

I don't care really. As long as developers don't use the parity excuse on why they can't pump out the juices of these systems, it's all good with me. Give them 200% for all I care. I really don't want other platforms to suffer because of this technical bs.

8% an be AF and more AA, maybe even 900p instead of 792.

Either way 8% is great, how would you all like 8% more on your paychecks? I don't like how people downplay this because its only good, no its not parity

hasn't happened yet, iirc and most likely won't.

It's 10% now according to Eurogamer. It was just a matter of time before MS got serious and sony doesn't stand a chance against determined MS

Did I miss something? Every source, including DF is saying 10%, are people that salty that they're going to make up their own numbers now?

An old assessment claimed 8% went to gesture and 2% to voice, but so far what I've read is that they found away to remove the full 10% reservation while keeping features. Forgive me if I missed the revision, or are people doing their own math?

Where the hell does it say that devs can use that 10% reserve while keeping all kinect/system features?

Doesn't, as far as I saw. They're giving devs the option of freeing up upto 10% of the GPU by disabling those features when the game is in action. I think there's a bit of wishful thinking going on at the moment.

I did not realize it was 10%. That extra 2% pushes it to the max now. Combined with the power of the cloud, it is clearly game over.

There is a big difference between facing reality and downplaying. I just happen to be realistic in my expectations.

But hey, if you need to believe in magic in order to somehow get by in this life, so be it, whatever floats your boat.

I have owned the XBone since launch day, even have the super extra special Day 1 controller that states this fact, yet I am fully okay with the fact it is, and always will be, the inferior console from a hardware perspective.

At this point in time I am not even sure how people can try and have the discussion that it is not. I truly do not.

Then again I own my consoles. They do not own me.

Wow, I said keeping features, like allowing voice commands, where did I say ALL features. Calm down. Let me look for the article I read. sec..

Then say some features. Saying "keeping features" implies "keep every feature".

Declaimer: English is not my first language, but I think I'm good enough.
