"June Xbox One software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth."

Really?

What are these good news?

One who doesn't routinely troll would naturally figure he was referring to Forza Horizon 2, Halo Collection, substantial XB1 OS additions, XBL's apps moving out from behind the wall, Halo 5 announcement, dropping Kinect and the price 100 dollars. All within the past month.

Funny, I was kind of thinking that as I was typing that part. I should have said even cooler newer stuff. I'm so entitled I want the thing after the next thing right now.

Haha, me too I was already thinking about E3 next year earlier, so entitled :(

Why do people feel the need to bring other consoles to this discussion. Serious question...

Phil never mentioned anything about closing the gap or any other console for that matter. Did i missed something?

Xbox One is getting a GPU bandwidth boost and that should be the discussion. Sometimes people could be a bit insecure around here :/

That's hardly a "roll".

Throwback to the Eurogamer interview with Xbox 1 chip designers...
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-the-complete-xbox-one-interview

"One thing to keep in mind when looking at comparative game resolutions is that currently the Xbox One has a conservative 10 per cent time-sliced reservation on the GPU for system processing. This is used both for the GPGPU processing for Kinect and for the rendering of concurrent system content such as snap mode. The current reservation provides strong isolation between the title and the system and simplifies game development (strong isolation means that the system workloads, which are variable, won't perturb the performance of the game rendering). In the future, we plan to open up more options to developers to access this GPU reservation time while maintaining full system functionality."

Well, Imagine AMD brig out a new 'imaginary' CPU, lets call it the KILLERGPU....

Is KillerGPU good, bad, average....???

So, you run a benchmark of a multiplatform game or 2 against references.

So, claiming XB1 has improved, we would need to see a benchmark test against a known reference of a multiplatform game.

Everything else is just hot air.

You're right Microsoft is merely on a hot streak, these are rolls:

spencer yells about pretty much anything these days. But then again, the microsoft fans are mighty thirsty after a year full of salt. E3 will bring the noise, let's see if Microsoft can keep up.

I think he talks to much and shows to little.

Really? He's been head of Xbox for only 2 months and under his watch they unpacked Kinect, dropped the Xbox price, uncoupled apps from Xbox Live Gold, announced the new games with gold for Xbox One, while continuing to engage people directly on twitter.

He's the best thing that's happened to Xbox since J Allard wore a hoody with a sports coat.

Well my friend I understand what your saying but the question still remains, what does closing the gap or any other console has to do with Phil's tweet?

I told you guys hidden power coming soon update bring 4.2TF GPU 64MB eSRAM the hyper visor access the stero mono drivers PS4 weak 1.8TF GPU Sony lie since February pay sites to keep truth from coming out N4G neogaf paid ponies tell lies about Xbox One but truth coming soon all you Sony ponies burn MS keep everything quite so when reveal come Sony can't do nothing developers stuck with 2010 GPU MS taking over soon Sony don't even have any games for E3 MS have tons games watch E3 everything change Sony rain in done ponies cry tears MS laugh to victory.

In this case doomed to read it.

Good reminder that paid astroturfers are a pointless waste of money when you have an army of champions who'll do it for free, regardless of "side."
This is interesting ..

Kotaku: Halo dev accuses forum poster to be Sony astroturfer

:P
Yup. Xbox One has more RAM.

32MBs of SRAM and 8GB DRR3 is like 8032 MBs of RAM.

Playstation 4 only has 8GBs of GDDR5 RAM, that's only like 8000 MBs.

Xbox One has more RAM, Sony has no chance.
This was a serious argument at one point, not sure if you'll believe me.

Forza Horizon 2? Ok, game announcement.
Substantial OS addition? External HDD....um, ok. Competition already allows to swap the HDD.
XBL Paywall - Games w/ Gold? Now THIS is good news.
Halo 5? Game announcement...
Dropping Kinect and new SKU? Not a price-drop, don't see this as good news really. Just making it more competitive. OS was designed with the Kinect in mind.

Eh, I guess it depends on which side of the fence you're looking from....got it.

That's your problem. You think there needs to be sides. Imagine how much more fun you could have if you didn't view gaming as a war.

but you can derive value from resolution. See Tomb Raider sales, Metal Gear Solid sales, etc.

(PS4 sales)

Higher resolution means more horsepower. You generally place more value, as you said, or dollar worth, on the system, or graphics card, etc, that can do more onscreen.

Interesting... I, personally, derive value of a game system from the games I want to play. Forza (a staple for me) launched with the console. Ryse and DR3 were actually surprising value as well for me. The multi plats, while noticeably inferior, still were good enough to warrant a purchase. If Sony launched with what I believe will be the inevitable third party exclusives for them like a Valkyria Chronicles or VF, then that would have been my first choice. Value is up to the individual and their particular tastes.

792p is specifically because of ESRAM limit (it fits just) and not necessary GPU.

Read the title again:

"dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth"

From my understanding, more bandwidth implies better use of eSRAM. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Kinect was taking up any GPU bandwidth, but rather 10% of it's processing power for tracking up to 6 full body skeletons and facial recognition. Either way, it sounds like the update includes software optimizations, and not just the release of this so called reserve for Kinect.

That seems like a huge oversimplication of the problems the machine has, an quite an incorrect one give that the number of 900p and 1080p games on Xbox One significantly outnumber the number of 792p games.

Correct. I think Anand did a good analysis of the issue (trouble hitting 1080p on the Xbone) and they concluded it was the ROPs. Piling everything on the ESRAM is an oversimplification.

Sgt. Bilko And Soylent Green.

Is that the name for the new Halo TV series?

Master Chief takes some time out from saving the galaxy and instead goes on tour with a ventriloquist dummy called Sgt Bilko. Covering his armor with a cloak and performing Under the stage name Soylent Green, him and his wise cracking side kick take Las Vegas by storm.

Coming 2014 exclusively to Xbox one

It would be nice if he gave out some numbers. These improvements might or might not be minimal at best.

The 8% reservation freed up by Kinect is decent, but SDK efficiency improvements can increase performance much more dramatically.

While the whole "cult of personnality" thing is in general rather weird (assuming it's serious - this goes for any side) you can't deny that the PS4 is Cerny's baby, and he was instrumental in Sony's good decisions for a lot of things.

The problem with Spencer is that he was there when the XB1 was designed, backed the whole DRM thing etc. He was head of MS Studios at the time, so I doubt he had no say in anything. While the removal of Kinect is generally seen as a good thing, it was a decision based on a necessity. They still tried to go for it, despite a lot of feedback indicating that people did not really want that thing "forced" on them. So they had to do something, because the price difference was hurting them really bad. It was a rather late reaction. I'll give him the change in Gold policies (both apps and free games) though.

But he certainly has a lot left to prove, and so far most of it has been mostly PR talk. Whenever there's a tweet or interview about him, it reminds me of Bruce Almighty "Yes to everything". Except that he has yet to show for it.

He had an executive position but all major decisions were made by Don and the board. For all we know half of the Xbox team could have shown displeasure in the direction Don was taking the company, but Don was the boss and all of the final decisions were his.

It really speaks for itself. To be clear, yes, it is acceptable if you have other priorities. If you can't agree with people, it's best not to antagonize.

Everyone else: As of now the show is a week away. A week. Zero tolerance for trolling, system wars, etc, will be in effect. Please keep it civil.
