"June Xbox One software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth."

What was that? Couldn't hear you over the sound of water filling up my tub. ;)

While the whole "cult of personnality" thing is in general rather weird (assuming it's serious - this goes for any side) you can't deny that the PS4 is Cerny's baby, and he was instrumental in Sony's good decisions for a lot of things.

The problem with Spencer is that he was there when the XB1 was designed, backed the whole DRM thing etc. He was head of MS Studios at the time, so I doubt he had no say in anything. While the removal of Kinect is generally seen as a good thing, it was a decision based on a necessity. They still tried to go for it, despite a lot of feedback indicating that people did not really want that thing "forced" on them. So they had to do something, because the price difference was hurting them really bad. It was a rather late reaction. I'll give him the change in Gold policies (both apps and free games) though.

But he certainly has a lot left to prove, and so far most of it has been mostly PR talk. Whenever there's a tweet or interview about him, it reminds me of Bruce Almighty "Yes to everything". Except that he has yet to show for it.

The "PC option" in no way improves the xbone's standing in the $400 category, despite "just get a PC" being often used as a diversionary response in debates between the two consoles.

Because we're talking about consoles and pc guys always feel left out and have to say something.

These make my post so accurate. I'm not being diversionary and I'm not just a PC guy.

If the conversation is just about multi-plats and the best hardware....then everyone get's to weigh all their options. Now if everyone on earth was limited to $400...then that choice is easy. That's not reality though...and only suits an agenda when arguing at a single price point. I can, and will, buy whatever hardware I want for the games I want...as can ANYONE here or anywhere else.

The PS4 is best for Sony Exclusives (or if you have no choice but to stick to a budget). The XB1 is best for Microsoft Exclusives, the PC is best for PC exclusives and 3rd Party cross-platforms that are also available on it IF you are talking overall performance capability. Now if you have a preference (many/most probably do) that's fine. Having a preference doesn't negate the existence of other options for others. Having a preference also doesn't mean you made the wrong choice, or that you don't enjoy what you have.

That's a simple fact.

Now this is NOT a PS4 vs XB1 hardware thread...so you don't get to dictate that only the hardware you specify counts. Also...this is not a hardware VS thread at all in the first place either...so I'm dropping from this conversation with this post ;).

That movie is older than me by about 9 years but I loved that movie.

Also I'm ashamed to share part of a username with that guy

Ha! Mind, doesn't make me feel any bloody younger, I was six when that came out. And still remember the abject horror of witnessing the attack on the Autobot shuttle in the first 15 minutes. I may even have pissed my pants.

I am all for developers getting access to better tools and more power. I also like the good news that Phil has provided, but what I like most is the hypocracy in these threads. You know the people that constantly went I'm a Cerny thread to dog him in some way are now praising Phil like the forum threads about Cerny they hated so much. Never change.

The hypocrisy runs both ways. It is what it is. Console warzzz.

If the removal of Kinect is related to this extra GPU bandwidth, I don't quite understand how it affects people with Kinect. Would it not work while playing these games that use this extra bandwidth? That's a question worth putting forward to the Microsoft team.

CoD Ghosts, DR3, KI, Watch_Dogs, BF 4, MGS V and Titanfall weren't even 900p.

You're talking about a lot of the earliest games on the console. Let's see where things are after this fall. We already knows the next COD is going to be 900p.

Devs will probably be able to deactivate Kinect features in their game if they want the extra GPU time. If they want to use Kinect, the reserve will still be there.

This is an interesting question. Perhaps they'll include some type of notification when initially launching certain games.

Maybe Kinect will only recognize a couple phrases? Like "Xbox Record That" and/or "Xbox Go Home".

This is the 8% that was stored for Kinect usage in games, right?

Haven't been following, but won't this cause serious fragmentation? Or is this really much ado about nothing? Were games that didn't use Kinect already allowed access to this 8%? Feels like MS is just making things worse, real possibility that many customers will just be confused.

Like I said in my previous post, the 8% was apparently just for motion controls. Motion controls is different from the kinect (video) camera and voice control so this move will still let kinect users continue using the kinect features on the system.

You're not wrong. Software can never eradicate the difference in hardware. This discussion is as closed as the great framerate non-debate. If the ps4 is 60fps and the Xb1 is 30fps, then the software is motion blur. No amount of motion blur will make 30fps better than 60fps.

Nope it will not close the gap. The role of software in this case is to make the hardware perform as close to its theoretical maximum as possible. Once both consoles are doing this, the gap mathematical remains constant. There is only one scenario where we would see the gap close. If the ps4 was performing at its theoretical maximum and the xb1 is under-performing. Unfortunately, this is highly unlikely because both consoles are still early in their life cycles. Performance updates are still being released but from a hardware perspective, that gap will never change.

Hardware defines the outer limits of what is possible. Software defines how close to the outer limit you can get.

I would hazard a guess that both consoles don't get close to utilizing 100% of their respective video cards capabilities.

DX11 performance was always relatively crappy on slower multi-core systems...and gee, look at the type of consoles that got built.

The PS4 has the advantage of having a greater outer boundary due to better a GPU, which would allow it to brute force its way through inefficient software. The bone doesn't have that luxury. Thats why DX12 is important to the Bone

I guess they will just completely disable the thing while playing certain titles.

lmao
Are you seriously comparing him to Cerny? One of the veterans and legends of this business?

Were was the Cerny praise before the ps4?
Must have missed all these threads.
Most people didn't even know he existed before the ps4 and the reason he is/was praised is the ps4.
And he doesn't get praised cause he built some kind of uber-console.
The reason he gets/got all this praise is cause he built a more powerful console then ms (by chance).
He could have built the exact same console and people would be cursing him if the power difference with the One were in the opposite direction.

Corporations are people my friend. You know who else is people? Your dad, the new pope (not Palpatine) and Sgt. Bilko. And Soylent Green.

Effectively, Sony and Microsoft are your parents.

You can't derive value directly from resolution. If you want to buy an XB1 for Titanfall, you do it because you want to play Titanfall. You pay for Titanfall, not 792p.

but you can derive value from resolution. See Tomb Raider sales, Metal Gear Solid sales, etc.

(PS4 sales)

Higher resolution means more horsepower. You generally place more value, as you said, or dollar worth, on the system, or graphics card, etc, that can do more onscreen.

"I'll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one of them."

It still won't eradicate hardware differences. Both consoles have custom apis and putting your hope in Dx12 is just sad. It's always going to be a weaker platform but it doesn't mean it won't be a fun platform or it won't have good games. Just focus on the games, then it doesn't really matter. Only the devs know what they are going to do with the power. When you are playing a game, you're not thinking about how many TF's the game is using or what the gpu utilization is. You're focused on the games and xb1 has some good games like Qb and Sunset Overdrive. People should just focus on that because if you try to resort to a hardware argument, the xb1 has already lost.

Love threads like this. The worst of humanity is on display for all to see.

Why people get so wrapped up in these machines and the companies that make them, I'll never know. I've been a gamer since Atari 2600, and I play on everything from my Xbone to my iPhone, and I couldn't give two golden shits about which machine has more powerz or which execs are awesomer.

Just play the damn games you like, people. And stop worrying about what everyone else is playing.

792p has a rendering significance at 32MB. so it will still be a target resolution.

i think its disappointing but not surprising that people blindly refer to how many 'p' does this game have then automatically dismiss it based on that, its basically the ignorant man's approach like someone blindly dismissing a car because of horse power. as if horse power alone is any metric when viewed in a bubble like people do with vertical resolution.

but yes this is definitely consistent with phil spencer's plan to remove kinect from the box.

Are you old enough to remember all the little kids (maybe you also!) watching it crying when Optimus dies?

Good times :D

I think he talks to much and shows to little.

The guy just got the job dude, what exactly are you expecting.

Besides, would it really be an improvement if Microsoft(or Sony or Nintendo) was just silent about everything?

As a child of divorce from the 80's, just let me say, thanks for opening that wound back up. No wonder I have to keep my PS4 and XB1 in different rooms.

In actual response to the topic at hand I'm curious about the specifics. How much is available and what do these new tools offer devs? I'm actually more interested in the answer to the second versus the first. Most importantly when do I get to see new cool stuff, because really it is all about new cool stuff.
