Just Cause 2 Demo Impressions - 360/PS3/PC

In his defense, the way you wrote it really, really made it seem like you weren't using the parachute at all.

played it some more, does the animation look choppy to anyone else? on the main character, his animations look like they're only updating at 20fps, while the game is running over 60. (pc version)

Oh, shooting the tanks and riding them into the sky is one of the coolest things in gaming. I was surrounded by like 20 guards and made my escape that way lol.

So I tried to explore quite a bit with the boundary 'hack' enabled and after a little while the minimap runs out and the geography just plain disappears when you get close to it so its kind of a useless hack. I did manage to take a helicopter clear across the map to where the blimp is only to find out it wasn't solid and I couldn't grapple it. It was also an extremely low res texture. Seems like they turned off geography building and streaming to the higher textures after a certain distance from the demo area. Smart of them :) I'm sure they expected the demo limitations to be bypassed eventually.

Besides, including all the high res textures and geography for the entire world would be stupid for a demo because it'd likely be 10x the install size it is now. Seriously the world is so freaking huge. It took me about 15-20 minutes going full speed in an attack chopper to make it roughly halfway across the map. The scale of this game is immense and I can't wait for release day.

if you're using latest nvidia drivers then all games lock up

They don't but it isn't recommended you use them though

I've had a right time trying to sort out my graphics card today, after reading news of nvidia pulling the newest drivers after I'd just installed them yesterday, I installed the ones that Nvidia replaced them with and the performance tools so I can overclock the card but the overclocking tools weren't detecting the clock speeds of the card properly, so I reinstalled the drivers to see if something went wrong with that last install and it doesn't work again. I just searched google and the drivers that are on the Nvidia site have a bug where the overclocking tool doesn't work, way to go Nvidia! I'm lucky that the card didn't fry yesterday though, I even overclocked it.

Probably keeps the demo size way down also.
Speaking of which, I like the way this game deals with LOD, making it look more like a deliberate effect rather than a way to keep framerate up.

I dunno I kinda found the roads/buildings popping in below you as you skydive down pretty distracting. Especially the roads, doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to have some low-res road texture assets for distant areas.

How do you do this? I can never get off the ground.

I would say it is. I dropped the resolution from 1080p to 720p and the framerate didn't go up. It generally stays between 40-60. I have a 5850 / i5 750.

I have the 5850 and i5 750 as well and I noticed that too. I tried messing around in the settings to see if I can get it to keep a solid 60 but nothing would raise it. 40-60FPS always, regardless of the settings.

Im not complaining, i just thought it was odd.

I assume this is with vsync? What are the settings?

There must be a problem with the 5xxx series drivers, because as I posted earlier I got 59.938fps vsync at virtually max settings (1080p 4xAA, SSAO off) and 101fps with vsync off. That's with Phenom 2 x4 955 and a pair of 4890s.

Come to think of it, even the dude with a freaking 5970 was saying the same thing:

Maxed out on a HD5970 at 4xAA, runs 40-60 FPS vsync'ed.

Of course, he was using SSAO, I also got 40-60 when using it. If you're using it then turn if off NOW.

Not the red tanks, the white ones that stand up. Pop it once, it will start to steam, wait 2 seconds, tap to grapple *don't hold down the grapple*, you want to actually get on the tank. Success, it's so fun.

It won't work unless you aim for the top of the tank as it's launching.

I shoot it when I'm already on. Also, you don't have to worry about it killing you when it explodes; it won't.

same for me, i ended up running it 1280x800 in windowed, but thats fine for me because i run all games windowed anyway :D

You can go into your graphics card settings and turn scaling off. That way you can play full screen with the fps boost and it will be clear since the pixels wont stretch, though it will letterbox the screen with black bars.

While the explosion will not kill you, sometimes you will be sent into an unrecoverable spin that will kill you once you hit the ground.

I wish there was more complexity to flying the helicopters. Also, the pop-in for vehicles is kind of crappy across all platforms. You can easily sky dive/parachute to the airplane from the starting location and the vehicle pops into view only after you are extremely close (and for some reason it rolls backwards once it does).

Didn't know this was a Steam Works game. Runs great with maxed settings on my system (Q9550, ATI 4850, 8GB RAM).

On the PS3 version I don't have to aim for anything in particular. A few times I grapple after it's airborne and still ride it lol.

Ummm... huh?

EDIT: Wow, this game has matured. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IClCUZtR8Yo&NR=1

So, you can't play this game on Windows XP...why not?

Well, deleting. That was a waste of time.

Guess I'll need to get Windows 7 some time, have no need for it though, siiigh.

You downloaded it without reading the specs?

Minimum:

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista (Windows XP is unsupported)

And the reason for that is that at minimum it uses DX10, which XP doesn't have (I think). I know it doesn't support DX9.

Was anyone dissapointed that the demo takes place in that desert enviroment?
I would of liked it to be around water and the lush green forrests.

Here's a 1080p video I made showcasing a Base Jump that goes on for over 1 minute.

BASE stands for building, antenna, span, and earth. Has to be a jump from an object fixed to the ground :P.

I downloaded the demo last night, so much fun. I love grappling onto attack helicopters and taking them over. I tried to surf a gas canister off a cliff but it didn't work out :(

Ehh... there seemed to be a fair bit of variety in the 35km available just in my one playthrough... and I bet they picked an intentionally average section of the map to display for this purpose.

Soooo...

Might just go for it. There really are no better deals on straight pricing, right?

Since it's a Steamworks game I wouldn't mind having a box copy at all, but for me Steam, and it galls me to say it, just works.

Anybody going for this?

Because it is Steamworks, just go for retail and register your key to Steam. Usually you can find a better deal quicker.

just to inform again, Amazon is selling it for $50 and it includes $15 credit towards a future game purchase, making it more like $35 if you plan to buy at least one game in the future from Amazon.

damn my silver xbl account. You know the worst thing is I have a 48 hr card and even with that activated you still cant download gold exclusive demos, MEEEH. Guess I'll have to play it at my friends house.

I turned of SSAO and vysnc and the highest I ever got was 73 fps staring at the ground. It barely went over 40 when the action started. I'm inclined to blame something in the drivers since so many other configurations are getting better performance.

This is an instant buy, folks. After replaying this thing for the sixth or seventh time, JC2 is a game designed with simple fun in mind.

yeah, this is a game where you think "I wonder what would happen if.."

I was thinking "ok, I wonder what would happen if I attack a gas tank to the helicopter, then shoot it" *gas canister pulls helicopter around, throws me off, watch it barrel rolling towards the ground before it explodes in mid-air* "oh, that"

I just played around with the time limit hack, and finally found the plane... awesome. The planes were pretty cool in the first game, but the limited draw distance meant that it was too easy to spend most of your flight in a thick fog. It's crazy how much more fun the flight and parachuting is just from the draw distance alone.

I wish Steam had a better preorder bonus, but Amazon's deal is pretty good too considering that it'll register with Steamworks.

Let me know if you figure out what's going on.

Not much of an answer but I turn AA off completely, I get a buttery smooth 60FPS all the time. With the AA on, I get a lot of varied and inconsistent drops. Im going to guess that its the drivers as well. Maybe 10.3 will smooth it out more for us.

I tried searching but there arent many others out there with 5850s talking about this.

EDIT: Actually, nevermind. Thats not it. I was smooth for 10 mins without AA and now Im sitting still at 40 with less going on than before. I dont get it.

There's something odd about this game. I have this huge urge to play it. I'm having a hard time playing BFBC2 because I keep wanting to fire up JC2 just to skydive. I mean, I recognize all of its faults, I just don't seem to care. It's just so much stupid fun.

Man, whoever said the PS3 version was sub 720p was full of shit. Also has some nice AA which is rare for PS3 games.

Played through the demo once... didn't really know what I was doing, nothing terribly exciting was happening.

Played through again and had about half a dozen "Oh fuck yea!" moments.

-Full barrel roll with perfect landing while dodging some cops
-Ditching a plane right into some enemies
-Attaching a gas canister to a guy and watching it explode and carry him away
-Riding a bike off a cliff into a huge base jump
-etc, etc, etc.

Also got more of a taste of the progression systems in place, I can't wait to really get into destroying this place.

With everything maxed with 4xAA, the game seems to hover around 30-40 fps, with 30fps most of the time since it's v-sync.

I turned off AA, SSAO, and set shadows to low and detail shadows off, the game stays a consistent 60fps though.

I'm running a Geforce GTX 275 with a Phenom II x3 at 3.6Ghz for reference at 1280x1024 resolution max.

I'm spending most of my time just trying to launch my ass higher and higher! The tease of the city in the distant is alluring as I fall.

Game is fucking mad, I love it. Nothing better than attaching enemies/civs to canisters and watching them get carried off into the sunset. Wow, holy fuck. I'm really excited to play through the other environments. Especially the city area.

Shame it's the standard version on steam. I figured they would have just thrown the LE up there like BC2, since it's a steamworks title.

Love the Indiana Jones type moment at the end.
:lol

Funny thing, when you said Indy I thought you meant something totally different. In my case, I tethered a statue head to my jeep, I pulled the head off and proceeded to run over enemies with what looked like a huge rolling ball. that's my Indy moment :D This game (like other awesome games) affords you so many different ways to make things fun, I am loving it.

Yeah, I never really buy games from Amazon. So $45 is not too unattractive... but I'd still rather pay less. :P
