Just Cause 3 - early impressions thread

Thoughts mirror these mostly, great fun but flawed. Story seems trash so far. The fun factor is so high though, it helps push past those others flaws, as glaring as they are.

Is anyone playing this on PC? If so, where did you pick it up in the US so early? Thinking of checking out Best Buy tomorrow...

Also, how is easy it to jump in and just start blowing shit up? Are there a lot of weapons and ammo readily available?

Lol @ any reference to/criticism of the story.

I hugely value story in my games, and 30 minutes into Just Cause 2 it was clear that story is not what the games are about, and I began skipping every cutscene. Experience immediately improved, and I'm sure I'll be doing the same in Just Cause 3.

Mad Max i such an underrated game. Can't believe it went on being ignored on gaf :/

It got a pretty helfy OT IIRC and some good defence. It's a good game. But it's just not a good year for it.

Ya I think the big issue is that they kept talking about it(the devs) like all the time. So it made it something people discussed later.

Hah, shit. That is an error on their part.

Although, on the one hand, don't big up something your game doesn't focus on, but on the other, the game should stand for what it's good at. If you can skip the cutscenes, skip them.

Ya I admit I don't think they probably understood what might happen but most people probably took it for what it was. Them trying to BETTER the story not make a BETTER story than some great games out there. Sadly that message can get messed up.

Literally the first dev diary was about Rico and how they were making him more of a character and really doubling down on the story
lol

Lol I know. We were discussing it on the podcast actually and funny enough everyone there got REAL quiet when someone read the excerpts from the first interview.

It happens though. I get it. They just wanted to really explain the improvements that they were trying to do by making a character not being a throw away. The real issue here is the narrative can't slant perfectly into the gameplay. The gameplay is just too bombastic for that.

I want this game so god damn bad.

From what I'm hearing, it's JC2 but shinier and better. Which is honestly all I need. Haven't even been watching videos.

Gargantuan bummer that Rico doesn't do his bad ass flip anymore though.

I feel like, at least with JC2, the story was supposed to be nonsensical and a bit weird.

I mean, in Just Cause 2, just look at the story missions. Some featured disappearing ninja soldiers with guns. The second to last story mission had you climb to a giant mountain with a giant head on it (like Mount Rushmore or Olmec from Legends of the Hidden Temple) and you had to push some buttons that opened the head's mouth so you could continue inside to an Asian styled garden.

Not to mention the final boss, where you
ride on top of three nuclear missiles flying to the United States, shooting the boss while grappling from missile to missile as the Just Cause world is below you
.

Only a crazy story can explain this kind of stuff.

It's Steamworks so nobody outside of those who got it early for review/publicity purposes will be playing it on PC until release.

I have to ask, how many of you giving those impressions played jc2 and liked it?

because it being one of my top 5 games last gen i admit it
-lacked story worth calling a story
-tons of fps drops on console
-had wonky driving physics(which i liked)
-had long load screens

and nothing stopped me from loving it
jc3 just seems like jc2 on superman level crack to me.

i mean seriously, are people complaining about voice acting in this game now? really?

Were people legitimately thinking Just Cause 3 was going to be amazing? I was under the impression the series was fun to play, but the story and characters were something nobody expected. JC3 looks like a lot of dumb chaotic fun, I just remember getting tired of the first two really quickly.

- You can't speed up the parachute anymore to move around quickly like you can in Just Cause 2
*vomits*
- Ambient music is REALLY nice;
This is always a GOOD thing.

I just bought an asston of games from the Flash Sale a day ago, so I'll probably wait for this to hit $40 or lower before I pull the trigger. Might even give it enough time for a couple more performance patches on PS4.

Thanks, OP!

When the JC fans said they were excited for this game and thought it would be amazing, they meant amazing for the purposes that made them enjoy the previous titles so much (dumb chaotic fun). Even the biggest fans of the series recognize the story is bleh and has nothing to do with why they like the game.

Agreed. If you liked JC2, this looks like more of the same, but improved. If you didn't like / didn't play JC2 then probably proceed with caution.

Exactly,
when you start off just cause, how can your first impressions be that the story is a joke and voice acting is bad?

Sounds disappointing. Actually most big releases this year since MGS (or maybe Mario Maker) seem to have been disappointing in some way. Think we peaked a little early.

MGSV was certainly disappointing in some way. Not every game can be perfect and every game has flaws. I think it just comes down to whether the rest of a specific game makes up for the flaws each person experiences.

Just FYI, you can get PC version of Just Cause 3 for $23 on cdkeys.com using their black Friday coupon code. Im not suuuper interested in the game, but for $23, I'm ok if its just a fun diversion for a bit.

Yeah I ordered mine 2 weeks ago when it was $26. Mine is a Steam code. I am assuming it still is for this deal.

I guess that is true, I haven't played MGS but it didn't get the reviews that indicate a 'disappointing game'.

I'm pretty sure I paid less than $5 for Just Cause 2, if this is the same but prettier I can't see myself putting down anything near full price

I'm amazed you somehow managed to avoid the very loud discussion of MGSV's poor story. :P there have been many, many threads on here about it.

Thanks, at that price I'll try it because JC2 was fun to mess around with. I usually stick with places like GMG or Best Buy GCU but JC3 doesn't seem to warrant paying $40+.

I've seen some incredible GIFs from this game. It seems like you could spend hours just playing around with the grapple hook. Tempted to pick this up but I think I'll wait for people to really sink their teeth in and give impressions.

JC2 was a world class "podcast game", the sort of affair where you turn the sound down and mindlessly explore/create chaos while listening to podcasts or watching TV. That's all I really want out of JC3, I hope the PC version delivers.

The complaints of framerate issues on PS4 are really bumming me out. It's been a concern of mine for awhile, with Avalanche never showing footage of the console versions. Now we know why. Depressing.

Not a fan of Rico's character redesign. The online integration also seems like a mess and having a skill tree also seems like a strange choice.

This game performs worse than Fallout 4 on PS4. Probably the worst technical mess Ive seen. Hitching and terrible fps

Really disappointing. I'd probably hold off on this game but I'm getting a free copy.

Mad Max i such an underrated game. Can't believe it went on being ignored on gaf :/

I was actually going to pass on the Black Friday deals on Mad Max because Just Cause was around the corner but I broke down and picked up a copy today.

Amen. I 100% every location. I still boot it up from time to time to look for the collectibles scattered outside of marked locations on the map. I'm north of 99.5% of items found if I remember correctly.

- Rico has a different voice actor. He sounds like a try-hard Ezio from Assassin's Creed II now. In fact, everyone sounds like an ACII voice actor reject, and not in the charming "BOOLOOO SANTOOOSI" kind of way;
Oh, really? I loved that he sounded like this guy:
