Kay Plays |OT|

I never watched her other LPs, but I'm loving her run through this one. I'm using her playthrogh as a means to vicariously play Demon's Souls again for the first time. I've even caught myself speaking to the video sometimes when small things happen that she doesn't notice immediately.

Don't a lot of people play games like that? I still don't understand what's so special about her.

I think there's a bit of a difference. She's really thorough in poking at and exploring the world in the game she's playing to not miss even the tiniest details. It's to the point where even I, as someone who has played DeSo upwards to 8+ times and thought I knew most about the game's lore, am being taught new things from item descriptions/NPC dialogue I had no idea existed.

WTH LOL!

She just put on an absolute spider killing clinic. I think it's the hardest boss in the game if you don't use ranged attacks, it reminds me of 4 Kings a bit because of the intensity. Just a great performance to figure out so much about the spider and beat it in two shots the hard way. This is one of the positives of self restrictions in games, because this fight could have just been hide at the side and beat it with arrows.

The first time I played it, I would've agreed with you, I had lots of trouble with it and basically healed my way through damage because I stood in the corner where the webs are and spammed soul arrow - but now it's one of the easiest to me if you stick close. The danger is more at mid range where the webs, fire and AoE can all get you, close up all you have to do is block then attack and run from the AoE. Go melee next time you'll see :)

I'll have to try it again melee next time I play.

I dont get.

Unless you've already played a game, how are you not going in "blind"? The first time i played Demons Souls i was playing it "blind", same for everyone else. We all had to piece together the plot, what to do, where to go.

So what makes this so special?

I used a guide for almost every step of my first Demon's Souls playthrough and, while it was amazing, I did feel like I missed out on something. I recently played through Dark Souls 2 without any kind of guide, which was an awesome experience. However, I had to cheat on a couple of occasions when I'd been running around for over an hour with no clue where to go next or how to proceed with the game. Other than that however, it was really cool literally having no idea what was coming up or how I should do stuff.

I'm getting increasing annoyed with the shitty translation that she is using.

I dont get.

If you look above, someone explains why: because she looks at EVERYTHING. I sure as hell didn't do that in my first playthroughs of the Souls games. She pieces things together using very limited information, without looking anything up, using a shitty translation that would make me tear my hair out.

Let's Plays are almost always for the person playing, and not the game itself.

Posts like this really confuse me. Do people really play games and not look things up online when they are confused? Hell, 15 minutes into Dark Souls I went online and googled what the hell humanity did, and I googled how to jump. Sure, I don't necessarily look up a walkthrough to find out how to get through a game, but anything about the mechanics of the game or controls I will freely look up online if they confuse me.

I don't find it fun to not know things. To me, there is no entertainment value to getting an item and being confused about what it does (humanity in Dark Souls), so if I really don't know I'll look it up. I guess if you look up nothing as you play and don't talk to anyone else about the game for advice then sure you do blind runs too, but I don't really think many people play that way.

Why is she playing the Asian version, anyway? I haven't seen any of her previous playthroughs and skipped ahead a bit in this one. I'll probably go back and watch her archives, but I'm curious.

She didn't know that there were multiple versions of the game when she picked it up. She's since ordered a better version AFAIK, but feels that she's made too much progress in the current version to start over from scratch again.

Man, every different archstone zone has such a distinct character in this game..

Not cobbled together environments like in Dark 2... but very cohesive, yet uniquely structured areas following each other.

Demon's is so freaking good.

Man, the AI in Demon was rough.
Holy shit at both the phantoms just falling off like nothing at all.
She didn't even try to trick them or anything, they just walked off.

I did the exact same thing the other day vs those 2 black phantoms, it's been a while so I forget what they drop. But that whole lizard/BP trap is really cruel!

  • Shows how unforgiving the game is.
  • Once they're rid of. You can now easily hunt the lizards.
  • The sad part is though: You miss a spawn sequence, iirc because they disappear.

I hate the Bladestone upgrade path. Biggest bullshit in the Souls series.

Every time she killed one of the Black skeletons and happened to get a Bladestone shard/chunk, my vengeful demon from years ago was incredibly bothered by how many she was getting.

I had the video on mute and just cut it on. Is that her voice? Is she using like some voice changer thing or something? zip a dee do dah bye bye now
Is it wrong that I think Demon's might still be the best looking Souls game?

It's the only right opinion to have.

That ending was heartbreaking. I so badly wanted to be able to tell her to reload the game.

This remains my favorite thing about Demon's when comparing it to its sequels. It's practically an insult to Demon's when people keep comparing Dark Souls II's cobbled together mess of a world map to it.

I don't even bother with a shield anymore, haha. Once you figure them out his attacks are really easy to read - just roll.

Lots of people play knowing things like to get the Crescent Falchion, or the more obvious thing being the Drake Sword in DS1.
I got these for the Platinum but they help on the first playthrough? I mean... I used a shit sword and a good bow my first playthrough.

I guess most people played it blind.

Blind means like everybody else played Demon's Souls?
.

Only for like the first day players which I'm guessing wasn't a lot. I remember getting the game sometime in December of 2010, but the wiki was already fleshed out by then and I sucked so bad that I ended up resorting to it and eventually got the platinum thanks to it which led me to being prepared for a blind Dark Souls playthrough when it first came out.

I used the wiki for Platinum but I needed one more NG+ playthrough because my first one was blind.

First time I played Demon's Souls, I summoned a phantom in 4-1 and he led me to the Crescent Falchion and I ended up beating the game with it.

Blind means like everybody else played Demon's Souls?

It is the only truth.... btw Demon's is the best game too.

Nexus and World Tendencies were what made Demon's Souls the best.

Demon's Souls is wonderful, but you just highlighted my two least favorite things about the game. The interconnected Metroidvania style world design of Dark Souls is far superior to the hub structure and WT just sucks.

I think WT is a badass idea, badly implemented.
The world getting darker and meaner according to the actions you perform? That's a cool idea.

Sure, it is a great idea, but that doesn't matter in the least because it is badly implemented and is just an annoying pain in the ass. I wouldn't mind them bringing something like that back for Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3 if they do a better job.

I think so too.

If by badly implemented, we're talking about network influence which tends to average it all out, that's bad.

Likewise, how playing the game in soulform does nothing for your world tendency.. for example, for whatever reason, Kay doesn't play in human form. I suppose she feels she doesn't need to waste an item to have a little bit more health. Agreed.. Badly implemented because her dying should influence the world tendency regardless.

Otherwise, I love the idea of the more you die, the more you suffer.
Honestly, there should also be a the more you do well, the more challenging but perfectly optional things occur, in addition to opening up new routes and whatever.

I would like to see even more drastic changes, if you kill npcs for example, stuff like the sky gets darker, light dies off, different, scarier enemies start spawning in unpredictable places.
Scary sounds, too, could be added as the tendency gets darker and darker (screams, or a deep crumbling sound, or whatever fits the setting).

In short, really make you feel like the world is going into mayhem.

Though i'm a Silent Hill fan, so that could be my point of reference. :P

1) Excellent detective skills learning about the world that she's in from the few tidbits that are doled out in item descriptions and character conversations. With her powers of deduction she discovers secrets that most people completely miss even after their second and third playthroughs like finding out Gwynevere's true nature in Dark Souls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEZR...KbObhIGrVmRhxT

OK, this was really cool! But
after finding out that Gwynevere is just an illusion that Gwendolin created, and accidentally needing to kill Gwndolin
she never went back to the Chamber of the Princess to see Gwynevere. Does she ever go back there?

OOo! Great stuff. I'd love to see that..

Call me a masochist, but I was thinking today.. It doesn't make much sense that items are kept while souls are lost.. Why not make picked up items in the last life stay with the bloodstain? If unable to retrieve, you'd of course loose those souls, but how about this.. the items are returned to where you picked them up from rather than just disappearing.

That would prevent suicide running for items.
It would also add a heck of a lot more importance, power, and respect for the homeward spell, and would give good reason, a serious choice between items or souls, when using the Nexial binding / Dark Sign.. I mean, who the heck would ever use those anyway as they are?

i think World Tendency was a good idea but it needed to be more malleable. i went back to demon's to get the plat and even a little mistake can ruin everyting. and it's bugged if you play online.

Items are a non-renewable resource, though. It would be a bad idea to make them disappear permanently. Maybe send them back to their spawn point or something.

I agree on the Nexus. I like having a cozy hub where I can kick back and relax without having to worry about stumbling across a nest of angry skeletons. I thought the atmosphere was superior to Firelink Shrine - I prefer Majula over Firelink for the same reason. It's just more peaceful for me.

I absolutely hate world tendency, though.

Yeah, that's what I said.

In the case of a one time drop by a one time enemy, maybe even have the enemy respawn,
