God no.
I hate that kind of editing.
At least in that gif they could be trying to hide the fact that the guy sucks at climbing fences ... but what's the point in a CG film ?
Some set pieces were really good, and the action overall was enjoyable.
Crowe's voice actor did not fit her at all, and neither did quite a few of the others.
Story-wise... meh. Character-wise... meh.
The iconic scene
where the two sides in the treaty room pull their weapons on each other was my favourite part. I wish there was an action sequence between them all instead of half of Regis' party getting killed by the robots.
I laughed at how easily four of the remaining elders were dispatched by Glauca. I was ready to be slayed by the fight between the 6 of them and him but nope.
For newcomers, it felt like it would be hard to follow.
But for people like me, who follows every bit of news on FFXV, this is brilliant. Due to low expectations from reading impressions, I managed to swallow the bad points and just enjoy it for what it's supposed to be - a lead in to the game.
While certain characters COULD have been set up better, everything in general moves so fast that I didn't even spare a moment to think of possibilities or could-have-been scenarios. Like I said, take it for what it is - this is the FFXV we've waited for and what we're getting. The decade wait really did make me grateful at times to see certain scenes like
the signing ceremony and the tense confrontations.
cheers from the audience during the credits when a certain track
uncovered trailer music
plays and also
the post credits scene.
Theatre was packed, too - I'd say at least 500 people.
One thing that really bothered me was the dialogue for most of the characters, particularly Luna. She seemed to go on and on about some destiny, miracle,I don't fear death nonsense and I just hope that doesn't carry on into the game. She seems incapable of speaking normally to other people and almost everything she spouts feel like trailer lines.
I kinda hoped
Luche made it into the game so I could punch his smug face into the ground. He reminded me of Rafe from Uncharted 4 in a way. Has that smug punchable face.
The final battle was really cool. I do hope the game would deliver something as grand as that.
Humorously, my local cinema, despite getting all the name correct (which surprised me considering how strange these names can get), got
Noctis' name wrong at the end. They subtitled his name as Knoxx.
A few questions I'll raise
How did no one know Darutos was Glauca all these years? Surely someone would get suspicious when he's absent
I don't get any of the traitor Glaives' motivation, so they decide to be terrorists agaisnt Lucis because Niflheim invaded their homes and Lucis didn't want to fight back? And for Darutos' motivation, his home has had to be sacked by Niflheim many years before the story even began.
There was that one racist guy that taunted Nyx at the toll booth near the beginning. So in the middle of the film he was leading the charge and failed to defend the crystal as I presumed he was gunned down. But then he appears near the end to escort Nyx and Luna out of the Citadel. Am I missing something here?
I don't get Luna at all. At the end she for some reason wanted to forgo Livertus' protection to blend into the crowd. But she doesn't bother disguising herself despite being a major political figure, and she at least could've used a lift to Altissia.
Where's Cor in all this? Stuck in the Audi's trunk?
For that matter, where's Etro? The infamous Etro portrait scene from the early Versus trailer was reworked and now the characters involved are not discussing about the mythos surrounding Etro and all.

apparently defect to Niflheim because Niflheim promised them their land back (which they would acquire from the treaty)
Apart from that I have no idea about the rest lol... the guard toll booth guy bugged me as well, there was some dialogue there that was lost in the noise.
I think he somehow catches on that the Glaives are defecting.
Saw this earlier today. My thoughts:
- some of the editing seemed a bit odd (e.g. drawn out fades to black. A movie doesn't need loading screens, no?) Okay so they weren't that long, but enough to seem a bit awkward.
- the two leading ladies
could have been handled better, Luna with more agency and Crowe with an actual on-screen resolution to her plot arc
- the villains' motivations/justifications seemed a bit silly (
"we're being invaded, so we'll side with the invaders"?!
Just got back from seeing it with a group of friends and we all loved it. Looked incredible and the story was mostly understandable unlike some other recent FF's.
It's barely playing anywhere in the world. A handful of Japanese and American dates to add a little prestige to what is really a direct to video release, id say.
I've watched it 3 times now, in different countries;
My general opinion on it is a 6.5/10:
-Editing, direction and the flow of scenes were chaotic and difficult to follow most of the times (3/10). It doesn't seem to have Nomura's editing magic like in Advent Children (which I would give 9.5). I went home with a headache because I was trying to focus too much on the scenes, and I had the backmost seat.
-Plot seems okay, but I'm very well versed of FFXV's lore, so I cannot represent the crowd (6/10). There is more to the story, and this is just the surface of it. So, one must take it as the intro to a deeper narrative. But it raises a lot of questions as to why and what and where is who.
-10/10 for the CG. Definitely an upgrade from AC and SW.
-Some of the characters were wonderful. I really like Regis, Nyx, Drautos, Iedolas and Ardyn (despite his quirky clothes and oiliness). Luna, Clarus, Libertus, Crowe and Ravus were very poorly depicted. I think Nyx should replace Gladio for the game......
-Music good but not great (6/10). I like Shimomura's better.
-I like the Audi car.
-I ate skewered kebab after that show. No kidding.
Now, to the plot discussion.
There are a lot of things I would like to discuss about, but for people who are not aware of FFXV's lore, this will be difficult to follow.
1) I believe the 3 summons at the end to be the Warring Triads and not members of the KOTR. One, because Warring Triads are always a group of three, and that was the number of summons depicted. Two, they arose from the statues of Lucis, another positive assertion at the Triads that were petrified (FFVI). Three, if you observe closely, one of them is a female/has feminine features. In the Japanese dub, the voice is a female. Warring Triads have a goddess, a demon and a fiend. I believe the feminine one is the goddess, the dead one with arms lost is the fiend and the last one standing is the demon. KOTR does not have a female member.
2) KOTR is the past Kings of Lucii (the voices and figures seen when someone wears the ring), they are hinted to be the final summon, and one of them is Regis. Regis was the one who believes Nyx should be lent the power of Kings.
3) Unlike Iedolas, who just wants the crystal, I believe Drautos and Ravus knows about this ancient power (or old walls) of the Lucii ring. Ardyn doesn't seem to know this either but he seems more concerned in preserving Insomnia instead of destroying it. It's 50/50 on who the final villain is, Ardyn or Ravus or someone else we don't know.
4) There's something about Luna and Noctis. It appears the union has always been something Sylvia and Regis wanted? As I recall the English version hinted as much but I can't seem to recall what was said in the Japanese version.
5) And what was the primary reason Regis sent Noctis away, was it so that he can save the world or save him from the attack? Because the Japanese one sounded like he wants to save his son, but the English one made it like so he can survive and save the world. It could be both.
6) People screamed when they saw Noctis at the end. Such a celebrity. I like Ignis's hand gesture while asking Prompto to concentrate on driving.
7) I think the exact same time the Regalia broke down was the moment Regis passed away. Sad.

This is a pretty good catch. The chaos of the fight was really hard to follow, so I thought there were only two. A female and a FFX Yojimbo looking statue. I'll have to watch this part more closely next time.

Yup. Still not sure I'd call them KOTR, but they feel similar.

They were already childhood friends, with a strong connection. I got the impression they were somehow tied by destiny. The betrothal was something that happened recently at Ardyn's behest.

He wanted to send him away so he could marry Luna in safety, and to remove him from the city. Regis sees the big picture. Things like territory aren't important to him, but something like the fate of the world is. Noct is a part of that bigger picture.

Just got back. My higher faculties were telling me it was a bad movie pretty much the entire time, but overall was still enjoying it. I definitely did not expect

But in the extended artwork for the game's cover you can see there is more than 3 of them. The one on the left is even holding a shuriken which we know it's one of the Royal Weapons Noct can wield and incidentally there's 13 of those.
Idk to me the Mysterious Entities=Summoned Creatures=Lucian Kings=KOTR theory seems like the most obvious one.

Thanks for clearing this up. I was confused because of this. I felt that it was more human for Regis to think of his son's safety more than the sons of Lucis (Japanese version). But, the English version made it almost like he is this majestic King that is wise and righteous and does not have an ounce of preference for his son over the lives of others.
I noticed that too, but I do believe they were referring to the past Kings of Lucis and not those 3 summons. And the "Thanks" section had several people grouped together with the same surnames. I wonder who those people are and what did they contribute. It looked to me like a few members of the same family. I believe Illusionist to be a Malaysian company. Major wow.
First viewing was with family, second with friends and last one because I wanted to clarify something before I wrote my review. It's to show my support for the FFXV universe. You'd be surprised to know how much money I poured into the FFXV universe merchandises.

The summons on the cover may perhaps be KOTR but in KG I will stick to my beliefs that those summons are Warring Triad. Two of the three already died, which made no sense if they were members of KOTR. But it is still to be contested.

Watched the first 12 mintues on youtube.
4 minutes of boring, drawn out narration followed by a 8 minute long, tedious and confusing battle scene.
Yeah, probably not the movie for me.
This is probably silly to think about but I was wondering how the physics of the weapon-teleporting works.
Do you retain your momentum from A to B? If so, you wouldn't be able to survive long falls, which is what the Glaive do all the time. But there are parts where it clearly shows Nyx still moving from his previous location (a la Portal) and taking advantage of that momentum for his next move. Does it use the momentum of your body or the momentum of the weapon?
How do you choose your body position? Is it the same one you teleported from and you have to "pre position" before you make the blink? Or do you do it when you get there?
Is your hand always attached to your weapon when you arrive? If so, how do you resolve the issue of needing enough space around your weapon for your body so you don't accidentally teleport into solid matter?
30th of September, Japan gets it tomorrow. And it's never actually worldwide when they say worldwide, I'm fully expecting lol region lock despite my country for once being one of the few which get the official localizations for the game straight up. Screw Sony Pictures and all the old farts there that still don't understand what the words "digital","worldwide" and "a movie made to hype up the game" mean.

Less than 24 hours until the movie is available digitally, guys. It's confirmed that it's being put on the iTunes store, does anyone know any other services that will sell the movie or make it available for streaming?

In case you didn't know: the animations were lip-synced to the English VO from the ground up. JP VO isn't the original and is just a dub, which is why the lips are off-sync more.

So ... was any of the music (excluding the main theme) Shimomura's? I felt like there were a few tracks that sounded Shimomura esque. Like during the Luna and Regis reunion.

I believe the Shimomura esque music were in fact Shimomura's composition but rehashed by John Graham to give the Hollywood music feel to it. It was good but rather generic to me. Feels like John Williams or Hans Zimmer. There were only a few ones composed originally by John Graham, but I can't remember which ones. Will have to wait until I get the KG OST CD.
I thought it was alright, but alright is all it was.
Action is grandiose but not particularly creative (I didn't find it all that hard to follow).
World setting is hinted at but by no means gone into - the story basically can't stand on its own which I suppose is fine for a video game prologue movie but they could've at least not tiptoed around some things.
The music is garbage, should've just let Shimomura do it, the delusions of grandeur of "We're making a Hollywood movie... but with Final Fantasy XV in it!" weigh down the movie more than anything.
It's honestly kind of... unnecessary.
Oh yeah, Tenebrae is gorgeous, if we don't get to visit that in the game in great detail, they can delay it right now until we can - I gave up on hopes that we'd see Insomnia in the game besides the central plaza.
