Kojima Productions 'icon' character revealed

Both the logo and this mascot seem too busy, too many random elements. But whatever gets Kojima fired up for his new game with fine with me.

Major Tom?

EDIT:
I'm honestly surprised no one has made the connection to Blackstar yet.

Kojima is a big fan of David Bowie, and I wouldn't be surprised if the design is inspired by the dead astronaut (speculated to represent "Major Tom"/Bowie, Major Zero's first codename of which was a direct reference to). The only real doubt is I'm not sure if Blackstar had come out when they revealed the logo, but if there was even a week of time between the release of the music video and the studio reveal I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was a conscious reference.

Edit: Also, is it just me, or does it look like an in game render in FOX engine? Does the engine they are now using (making?) just look similar. XOF engine rises from the ashes?

Blackstar video released november 2015. KojiPro was announced December 2015. They definitely had the logo done before December though. Who knows.

I get some seriously cool vibes from it, I don't know why people don't like it. It gives me a sort of 'Interstellar' vibe where humans are colonizing elsewhere besides Earth. He did mention the "frontier spirit".
Plus I love hi-res models and the overall quality in general from lighting and texturing is fantastic. I must know what engine/renderer was used.

Looks fantastic. Then again, I love space. Wasn't it rumoured that KP was using Unreal 4? Or was that just an educated guess?

Either way I hope it's a Sci fi action game.

only similarity i'm seeing is the direction they're facing, tbh

Which isn't even same if we're being picky. Anyways, this doesn't get me exited at all I'm afraid. I love Kojima but I have no personal connection to his mecha syfy creations so I'm underwhelmed. My dream scenario is him getting involved in a horror title with Del Toro or maybe a spiritual successor to Policenauts (retro syfy) which I haven't even experienced.

It may be just a mascot but I hope this isn't a indication of the direction of their first title. I'm tired of space grunts.

He's holding a flag with his own face on it, the dude must be his own biggest fan.
The suit is some seriously fancy tech, distracting from the fact that he's dead inside.

Is Kojima going all autobiographical on us again? Not sure if it's a mascot or a cry for help.

I don't think there's a living organism in there.

Look closely, it's likely mecha.

But..why need a space suit for a mech? When we find out we'll be ashamed of our words and deeds.

I don't know, it seems like Shinkawa could whip up a design like this pretty quick. Personally I actually think it is lacking in a couple of ways, but as they were obviously going for a pseudo-realistic space suit, it makes sense for it to bulky. I'd hope they are up to making revisions in the future because the idea is solid but could be improved.

She might be the protagonist.

That would be a surprise. I'd argue it is much more likely to be the character Kojima is making to bring Stephanie Joosten into the game, I don't have much faith in her having much depth sadly.

Heh, neat observation, but I don't think so. Kojima is finally free, and I think the design is meant to represent pioneering spirit, maybe in the face of "death" (the closure of the original Kojima Productions). I don't think Kojima is likely to make self-critiquing remarks now that he isn't strapped down to Konami. Like I said though, it's an amusing thought, and almost works in a way, but I don't think he's got any reason to be self critical in such a way right now.

I'm hoping he is actually no longer as cynical as he seemed to be with MGSV and that he proceed with an actual passion for his projects which seemed lacking in it recently. However, I also wish he was more self-aware of his faults and the ways he was responsible for MGSV's utter failure for a story, and that he forge a new path with vigor but also knowledge of "where to stop" and focus on what's important. If he can admit his fault in V's massive problems and take to heart criticism for it, while also being excited for the future, we might get something that's a return to form.

I'm reserving judgement and not buying into the hype though this time, I'll watch the trailers and discuss the game before release, but until I get real feedback from non-critics on GAF and other places that the game is not a disappointment, I'm not planning on buying it new.
