How the fuck is this spreading so fast? It's all over like every youtube video, facebook, twitter, 4chan, like what the hell? I've NEVER seen a thing spread this fast.

My bet is that it is a social experiment.
Look. 4 weeks ago, 95% of the people didn't know about this guy. Now? It's on every social network. And everyone is spreading all of this bs as a fact.

Good cause, potentially shady org.

But regardless, I can't stand the editing and form.

Maybe the clip wouldn't last the entirety of half an hour if they tightened up the editing and cut out the clips with his kid, who we don't give a shit about. This is a movie about african war crimes, yeah?

It's about The White Man's Burden, in my opinion.

This is...interesting. I study political science, so I've known about this guy for quite some time. But to see so many people on my Facebook just suddenly crop up with this stuff, quite amazing. I've never seen a video/issue spread so fast. I thought that "Why I hate religion but love God" video spread fast, but this has clearly topped it. 48 hours ago I didn't hear anyone talking about Kony, now it's all I'm seeing on Facebook and Twitter. The world has changed.

Just finished watching the video and immediately searched for the inevitable gaf thread. Read the visible Children tumbler, reddit thread and the wiki entry.

Now I have no idea what to think. The only thing I've come to understand is that Kony is a bad man. But invisible children wants military intervention which will kills kids. So, damn, what's next?

None of this makes sense. I'd hold off on throwing money at something like this...

What really seems off is the fact that they have a nice office, a fleet of cars, salaries to pay, money to host talks, expenses, equipement, and everything else....

Yes, they should either do this as a side thing while working 9-5 jobs or hope that everyone working for them lives on hopes and dreams. Forget actually paying professionals, hope they either get pro bono services from trained individuals or they should make do with volunteers.

As someone who actually watched the video and knew about Kony beforehand, I'm impressed by what they accomplished. It has had an effect if it's forced Kony's hand. He does need to be caught, though.

Also, about the organization being shady... I looked at one of the links.

What's the fucking issue here?

A 3/4 score overall with a 4/4 on the new scale which is harder to obtain than it was before. They spend 80% of what they receive on the program, with only 1% each going to the founders.

You guys made it seem like it was that Haitian charity that really did scam quite a few people.

If this video raises awareness and gets people to pressure the American government, that's good enough for me. It feels like it has parallels with American involvement in Colombia and the end of the FARC.

I saw the video when it had like 3,000 views, when i woke up today the video is approaching 8million views. Shit went into overdrive in 2 days, that's impressive. Hopefully it gains even more awareness.

Why do they need to pressure the government? They've been running operations in the region for years now.

Like the video stated, if it falls entirely out of the public eye, operations would likely cease. What's the American motive for being there outside of public pressure?

Taylor Swift tweeted the link this morning. In the video, they showed 20 celebrities with the biggest reach who they could sucker into the campaign.

I'm 50/50 right now. The video was good but even while watching it I had questions like "how's he have such a nice house if he's just an African aid worker" and "how do they have such a nice office for this campaign?" Reading reddit today might have answered those.

Yeah seems mighty strange the the charity aren't willing to take part in a BBB evaluation, that lack of transparency doesn't install great confidence really... the issue is no doubt important but there just seems to be something a lil' shady with Invisible Children.

It'd also be nice to know what the charity propose for a post-LRA Uganda, it seems a bit naive to think one mans capture will end all humanitarian crises in the region, or even that it will instantly result in the group disbanding.

Finally watched the video. Disgusting. Hoping to play a small part in bringing him down.

Edit - after reading this thread, I will hold off donating. Something is shady for sure.

It's nice that people are discussing this, and it's also good that more people are becoming aware of the crimes of Mr Kony ... but it's frustrating that we have to invade people's Facebook pages with viral videos to get them to give a shit

None of the people going on about Kony in my work today, and how terrible and awful he is knew about or gave a shit about the Arab Spring. It's nice that they're being educated, but it's a shame they had to be

Video ticker just went up a million views. This is the greatest internet campaign I've ever seen.

The logic of the internet has gone down so much because of this video

"Oh, you retweeted and shared a link about Joseph Kony? Tell me more about how you've always cared for Ugandan children "

have people gotten this stupid that, we are not allowed to share something if we haven't already cared about it?

I've been a big supporter of invisible children for a while, but this is just shameless. and pointless. and just a tad bit self-congratulatory.
okay, really really really masturbatory.

he's already been indicted by the ICC folks! "awareness" is a pointless buzzword used to take us on a guilt trip, then make us feel good once we buy a bracelet, and certainly has never been a prerequisite for justice in my book.

Uganda's oil business has become much more active over the past couple of months, now would be a perfect time to invade and steal all of it, but the public would never buy it. Before anyone could invade Uganda, the public would have to support the campaign. What would be even better would be if the public were to suggest the campaign to the US government, that way there would be no criticism at all.

This is all a ploy created by the Patriots! Kony 2012 is the S3 plan, April 20th is almost April 30th, Raiden is a child solider, we are the simulation!*

I don't actually believe any of this.

I watched the video, it was enlightening.

Neat if it works, not surprising if it doesn't.

If Invisible Children is indeed legit, and people share the shit out of this, where's the harm in that? I think the people who are mad about people sharing it, and the folks who are sharing it may end up spending more time arguing with each other about it than they will actually giving a shit about the actual cause.

This is coming from someone who is pretty damn pessimistic.

Now watch as people shed crocodile tears about this and then spend a chunk of their paycheque on the ipad 3 - built by Chinese slaves. But I guess that's okay because Apple pressured Foxconn to install nets to catch all the workers who decide to kill themselves in an effort to end their misery. They are true saints.

I wouldn't donate to invisible children if I were you. This article is pretty enlightening regarding the whole situation. http://visiblechildren.tumblr.com/

Yup, glad Taylor deleted her tweet. I know someone who sent that to her and her team last night, whether or not she saw that and it had an influence on her decision, I'm glad she deleted her tweet. Not saying this guy shouldn't be stopped though, people should be speaking out to their government not this shady organization.

Totally comparable.

As terrible as the Foxconn situation is for the workers, they're not under the awful tyranny of Joseph Kony. You're comparing one awful set of working conditions to the exploitation and warfare involving children.
