People are hating on Invisible Children now? Is this some new hipster shit to do to hate on an organisation that has made denonstratable improvements in the lives of Ugandans for a decade?

Mothafuckas must be bored. So cool to be cynical. As one who has supported Invisible Children for the last 7 years, these half-minute critiques generate real anger. So I'll just go about my way. IC is apparently too uncool for this generation.

Wow, did you bother to actually read about the matter? They may be well meaning, but it does appear that they are poorly managed at best and potentially criminal at worst.

The weird thing is, for me, I've always felt that I'm not as up to date on current issues that I should be...yet, honestly, I've done a lot of reading up about this whole Kony issue in the last few hours simply because I was, admittedly, cynical and annoyed by seeing it posted constantly everywhere I went. One person literally stated that the situation in Uganda affected everyone on the planet. :0

So, in a way, I feel like this video has helped me study up on the Uganda situation, although not like Invisible Children wanted to.

EDIT:

HOLY SHIT?!

Has anyone checked out their shop page yet?

Description of Action Kit said:
People will think you’re an advocate of awesome
I can't believe that's literally the first line of the product description.

Oh child, are you that naive?

I've been a supporter for the past 6, but advocating military action (and using propaganda tactics) is something I can't get behind. at all.

and if you're getting angry over legitimate concerns, then maybe you shouldn't be so defensive. we shouldn't be afraid to question "good intentions." (and I don't even know how good those intentions are anymore after this debacle)

edit: and let's not obscure the discussion by hiding behind meaningless buzzwords like "cool" and "hipsters"

I knew this was BS when they paraded it around my high school 4 years ago. Not only does it seem like a scam, but they refuse to be audited by a independent entity. People use these causes to make them feel like they are making a difference in the world with no effort at all. It's all a marketing scheme designed to prey on college kids who will buy their trendy action kits, and show all of the kids at school how much they care for the cause and how they are aware of the world. Donate money to an organization that actually helps people, rather than a propaganda film maker's rabble-rousing video hour art project. They may be helping people, but at best they are so poorly managed that it isn't worth donating to them.

Ok, please explain to me all the hate for this video and the guys that made it?I don't get why people are calling it BS?? The guys that made the video have exposed a real monster to the world, I didn't know who this guy was until I watched the video.

What is the problem?Nothing bad can come from these guys and their video, name one bad thing from this whole thing?I mean people being aware of the situation is only gonna help the people of Uganda. Please tell me what the problem is??

It sounds like this guy is using this horrible problem to make himself famous in the documentary film world. What an asshole, uh.

Yup.

And as a filmmaker, he said he had already received plaudits from producers in Hollywood. “They are getting in touch with the Academy Awards. They want this to be up for an Oscar.”

The most disgusting thing is that picture of them they took with them holding the guns was literally done as an ironic joke. No lie. They were posing for a fucking Christmas card.

The photo of Bobby, Laren and I with the guns was taken in an LRA camp in DRC during the 2008 Juba Peace Talks. We were there to see Joseph Kony come to the table to sign the Final Peace Agreement. The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) was surrounding our camp for protection since Sudan was mediating the peace talks. We wanted to talk to them and film them and get their perspective. And because Bobby, Laren and I are friends and had been doing this for 5 years, we thought it would be funny to bring back to our friends and family a joke photo. You know, “Haha - they have bazookas in their hands but they’re actually fighting for peace.” The ironic thing about this photo is that I HATE guns.

No, not nearly as hipster as people ignorantly jumping on issues in a nanosecond and going on a social media frenzy about something they know absolutely nothing about beyond an emotionally manipulative video that they've shared to all their friend lists. I've seen enough of things like this to get a good sense of where money is actually going, and nothing here strikes me as being used effectively. So how have you been supporting invisible Children, exactly? By buying their kits? How have you demonstrably bettered the lives of these children through your contribution? I seriously am curious to know- or even if you know.

Read man, read. There are some concerns posted just a few posts up.

Basically, IC doesn't even (assuming read the data correctly) donate half the money they receive. Most of it goes towards their own movies/expenses/salaries/whatever.

Simplifying a very complicated situation, and one where crimes and are on all sides, is at best not helpful and at worst dangerous.

Add in questions about what the group does with their money, and that they support military intervention, and that what they advocate would involve supporting a corrupt regime and murderous army to do it, and you have something that looks very misguided indeed.

But that's what I am talking about, so what if 30% of the money raised goes to the people in Uganda, and the rest goes else where , I will tell you where that money goes, it goes to millions of pamphlets and posters and billboards that are posted all over cities, it goes to creating more videos to spread further awareness.Theses guys are not trying to raise money to just give to the people of Uganda ,they are trying to spread awareness about one terrible man to the world. And so what if they draw a little bit of a salary from the donations to keep themselves and families going, who cares? They just made 8 million people aware of a serious problem and they are trying to help.

The whole point of this is to make the guy famous so that he cant be ignored and so that the US government is forced to do something, I didn't know who this guys was until yesterday and neither did millions of people around the world.Like I said nothing bad can come from all this only good.So why all the hate ?

No, dude. These guys are scam artists. How else do you explain $150k on computers? $700k on video camera equipment? $1 million on travel?

They are raising awareness for a problem that is MANUFACTURED (Kony isn't even in Uganda anymore) and are opening their wallets for donations that go towards lavish lifestyles and supporting the Ugandan military which commits atrocities of rape and murder on its own.

Come the fuck on. How can anyone, using logic, rationalize this?

Yup.

The most disgusting thing is that picture of them they took with them holding the guns was literally done as an ironic joke. No lie. They were posing for a fucking Christmas card.

I caught them being interviewed on CNN, and what struck me was how out of their depth they seemed with what they were talking about. It was actually hard to listen to, very self-congratulatory, and very dumbed down.

Reading the things on this page now as well, that's exactly how they come across. And it's worrying how people can drum up something on this scale, with whatever consequences result, when they seem to have such a misguided view of what they are doing and paint such a simplistic version of the situation.

This can't be helping other legitimate charities either who are on the ground there. I hope people are donating to them and not buying an action kit to fund their next Finding Nemo (Kony) film.

It's actually beginning to get me quite angry.

Even forgetting all the going ons with the money and other shady stuff with IC, bringing awareness to the matter is not necessarily good when it's spreading inaccuracies and misinformation. Surely you could see how this could potentially do more harm than good, right?

Championing for "good" does not always lead to doing good.

The UN is already looking for him.

But that shouldn't even be the issue right now. Ugandans are trying to move past Kony's atrocities. They want to rebuild but with IC's bullshit they won't be able to. IC is distracting the international community.

This is going to be hilarious after this all blows down and it is confirmed to be a scam.

People are going to feel stupid as fuck when the media jumps on this I bet. That day is going to be so hilarious and slightly awkward considering I got hated on so much recently for what i've been saying.

are there any other videos like this where the comments section isn't disabled?

Its amazing how the KONY2012 group is relying on social media to spread their message, but social media is also helping to spread information that makes their cause look bad.

Editing and Film equipment is expensive, so is flying camera crew out, and Ugandans in to spread the message across the us etc. I'd almost believe those costs.

So you have proof that Kony isn't in Uganda anymore? Is there solid hard proof?Otherwise its just some guy saying o by the way Kony isn't in Uganda anymore. Its like me saying O by the way Kony had been dead for 10 years. If any of that could be proven it would be different.

the way I see it, the evil this guy has done is evident, he has done some seriously bad shit for a very long time, if he is still in Uganda the world should know his crimes and should get behind a moment to take him out.I looked at that video of that chick that used to live in Uganda and now lives in the states talking about it, and saying that she never saw anything bad when she goes there 3 months at a time. And that's obvious because you can see she is not living in poverty and that's where this shit goes down in the areas with lots of poverty and no education.

I live in Africa and I never see bad shit go down because I stay in the better parts, it doesn't mean its not happening.Right now the worst thing I can say these guys are doing is blowing big amounts of cash on fancy tech to make more videos and stuff, so what? Like I said they just doing it to spread awareness, sure they could of used their iPhones to film it, but they didn't.So what, they are still helping.

They even said in the vid he wasn't in Uganda anymore but other African nations.

LRA movements are tracked and reported, there is US intelligence operatives down there and the official report is that LRA and Kony haven't been in Uganda for years. Then again now he is terrorising other areas so I think the awareness is only a good thing. Given that I don't really know if this document helps anything. They have been trying to capture Kony for years now and they will keep trying even without the support of socialmedia.

Exactly!!!! It doesn't change the fact that he is a bad dude, just because he drove across a boarder doesn't mean shit.He will carry on doing what hes doing else where, and the more awareness the better. That's why I can not understand the negativity around this whole thing, its blowing my mind.

Raising awareness and promoting misinformation are two different things.

Because it is painting an incorrect picture of what the current situation in Uganda is, what the underlying problems are, and ignoring the corruption of the Government and the same crimes of the millitary which would be supported by this.

Again, please read:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...2012-growing-outrage-in-Uganda-over-film.html

That's a perspective from Uganda.

I think the main problem is it distills the problem down to "Kill Kony, Save Uganda!"

Obviously that's hyperbole, considering Russel does mention helping out in other ways, but to the average viewer who watches the 30 minute video, unaware of any historical context whatsoever, that's pretty much the main message. It makes Kony out to be the lone villain, when likely his demise will result in someone else, perhaps even worse, replacing him.

Another thing on the topic of child soldiers is that it doesn't really address what will happen to them once Kony is defeated. They've been trained as soldiers for years likely, from a young age, and presumably most of their parents are dead. Not all of them are going to be adopted like Jacob and, honestly, once we've dealt with the obvious villain, I'm guessing people won't care much for less in-your-face problems. I don't see a happy ending for most of the child soldiers, unfortunately, because the movement doesn't target the root of the problem, but simply one of the many heads.

Ok I took a look at the article, it makes the point that things are not as bad on the ground as they used to be.Thats great news, so his army isn't as big as it was 6 years ago, that's even better. So now he shouldn't be captured and stopped and the world shouldn't be informed of what he did back in the day?

Now he might go on the offensive? Because of the video, of course he will, but it will be mild in comparison to what he has done over the decades, and this time he will most likely be captured or killed.I still think that these guys are doing no wrong with this video, they are obviously making a point by showing the worst things the guy did to catch the worlds attention, even though its not that bad now he still needs to be captured.

And they say its bad that the US military is on the ground helping the local army because it makes it seem they cant capture him themselves.O ya its terrible that one of the most advanced army's in the world is sharing state of the art military techniques with a 3rd world country's army, because obviously they could capture him themselves that's why over the last 20 years they have, o wait...

That doesn't solve the issue. Uganda's military is still corrupt as hell.

Ya well, anyways I am tired of typing now, there will always be shit in Africa, but taking out Kony would only be a win be it small or big.

A win for a corrupt regime, and a millitary who have committed a catalogue of similar crimes. So by the simplistic way Kony 2012 has portrayed things, and whitewashed the other side, you'd have a Goverment with a new found legitimacy, and also get more US military aid as a result.

The corruption and crimes would continue, possibly on an even bigger scale, while the world thinks "Mission accomplished" and their attention shifts elsewhere.

Simplying a situation as complicated and serious as Uganda isn't doing anything to address the underlying causes of the problems in the country. Throwing a military solution at it, let alone a corrupt one, isn't going to make things better in the long-term and could actually make it worse.

I am coherent enough to realize when someone is trying to genuinely do good. At the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong with assuming that the people who you are trying to help 1) need help, 2) want your help, or 3) can’t help themselves. IC and this video assumes all the above. Before anyone says ‘why haven’t you done anything to stop Kony?’, may I point out that it took the world’s most sophisticated army over a decade and billions of dollars to catch Osama bin Laden. Kony has been on the run for 25+ years. On a continent 3 times the size of America. Catching & stopping him is not a priority of immediate concern. You know what is? Finding a bed net so that millions of kids don’t die every day from malaria. How many of you know that more Ugandans died in road accidents last year (2838) than have died in the past 3 years from LRA attacks in whole of central Africa(2400)? We’ve picked our battles and we chose to simply try to live. And the world should be helping us live on our own terms, by respecting our agency to choose which battles to put capacity towards.

Invisible Children's OFFICIAL RESPONSE to the Criticism

RE: UGANDAN GOVERNMENT HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD
We do not defend any of the human rights abuses perpetrated by the Ugandan government or the Ugandan army (UPDF). None of the money donated through Invisible Children ever goes to the government of Uganda or any other government. Yet the only feasible and proper way to stop Kony and protect the civilians he targets is to coordinate efforts with regional governments.

RE: PERPETUATING THE ‘WHITE MAN'S BURDEN' AND THE SAVIOR COMPLEX
Invisible Children's programs in Uganda, DR Congo, and Central African Republic are implemented with continuous input from, and in respect of the knowledge and experience of, local communities and their leaders. In Uganda, we learned very quickly that a top-down, Western approach was not the answer, and that local solutions were needed to fill critical humanitarian gaps. It is for this reason that over 95% of IC's leadership and staff on the ground are Ugandans on the forefront of program design and implementation. In DR Congo, Invisible Children works with the Commission diocesaine justice et paix (CDJP), supporting projects that have been identified as priorities by local partners and that are responsive to local realities and needs. Invisible Children staff members in project areas consistently strive to ensure that they build the capacity of local partners and do not take on duties where local partners can more responsibly and effectively carry these out; the organization meticulously monitors and evaluates the impact of its work on the ground, partnering with Princeton in Africa and employing qualified Monitoring & Evaluation professionals.

RE: THE PHOTO OF THE FOUNDERS WITH THE GUNS (SEE BANNER IMAGE)
A story told by Jason Russell: Let me start by saying that that photo was a bad idea. We were young and we got caught up in the moment. It was never meant to reflect on the organization. The photo of Bobby, Laren and I with the guns was taken in an LRA camp in DRC during the 2008 Juba Peace Talks. We were there to see Joseph Kony come to the table to sign the Final Peace Agreement. The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) was surrounding our camp for protection since Sudan was mediating the peace talks. We wanted to talk to them and film them and get their perspective. And because Bobby, Laren and I are friends and had been doing this for 5 years, we thought it would be funny to bring back to our friends and family a joke photo. You know, "Haha - they have bazookas in their hands but they're actually fighting for peace." The ironic thing about this photo is that I HATE guns. I always have. Back in 2008 I wanted this war to end, like we all did, peacefully, through peace talks. But Kony was not interested in that; he kept killing. And we still don't want war. We don't want him killed and we don't want bombs dropped. We want him alive and captured and brought to justice.

RE: EXAGGERATING THE IMPACT OF THE LRA AND IMPLYING THE WAR IS IN UGANDA
Since the LRA left Uganda in 2006, Invisible Children has been publicly denouncing their atrocities in DR Congo, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic (CAR), while continuing to work with now-peaceful communities in post-conflict northern Uganda. In September 2011, Invisible Children launched the LRA Crisis Tracker website with the aim of providing high-quality, verified information about LRA attacks in DR Congo, South Sudan, and CAR. A detailed methodology is available on this website that explains how information is collected, verified, and rated in terms of its accuracy and reliability. Every incident that is reported through the Early Warning Radio Network run by Invisible Children's partner organizations is carefully verified with other actors in DR Congo and CAR before being published to the LRA Crisis Tracker; even after publishing, incidents on the website continue to be modified as--and when--further information becomes available. Each incident is rated according to two criteria, on a scale of 1 to 5: whether an incident has actually occurred, and whether it was committed by the LRA. In this way, Invisible Children is providing concrete data and helping to dispel unfounded rumours about LRA attacks.

*As an aside, Jason offered to fly me out to San Diego to meet with IC, and later in the conversation, offered to fly me to visit their projects in Africa. It would’ve cost Invisible Children at least $3000 in flights alone. I would’ve loved to go, but said no only because if I donated to IC, I wouldn’t want my money going towards flying a blogger to Africa. But that’s a whole different conversation.

Doesn't really explain why they tried to bribe this guy for his blog.

It's done IC is dead. I can't see how you can defend this organization when actual Ugandans hate them.

My favorite version so far.

kony 2012 has to be one of the most effective brainwashing phenomenon ever to be implemented on a larger scale using social media

It sounds like a good cause but I watched about half the video and turned it off because it was so boring. I just think the angle he's taking with him and his son is really cliched and they're trying to make this one guy out to be a Hitler/Stalin type guy. I doubt that if this one guy disappeared all the problems related to that issue would magically go away.

Wait, what? Nooo you monster how can you say that? Don't you have a soul?
Dude... I'm gonna donate 2 bucks in your name.

Seriously, where are now the people that defended this bs?
And again, who were the hipsters?
