Kony 2012

Did anyone else try to get a refund on something they ordered from the Invisible Children website. They don't give any indication that you can ask for a refund. I did find an email and address and sent an email asking for a refund yesterday.
Today I got an email from Google saying that the email I sent was rejected by the recipient, this has never happened to me when sending a email before and seems kinda shady.

Ironic that the policy supported by Invisible Child to use military aggression against an army comprised of children is so similar to the Bush Doctrine

Fricken genius.

I was reading an article awhile ago about a popular quote by the dalai lama that spread over facebook. But the thing is, it wasnt even a real quote. But apparently you can post something on a social network and it spreads like wildfire and the vast majority will just assume its real.

These guys took advantage of that phenomenon. My little sister and her friends even bought an action kit. And Im not gonna lie, theyre pretty stupid. They remind me of that facebook girl meme. Its almost diabolical how this 'charity' is preying on stupid teenagers.

So a friend posted that article (the telegraph) one and a fast reply was given:

"this has not the slightest bit of hostility in it, but if you really are passionate about this CAUSE quit following the trend trying to fight against this campaign, when you could be looking into other organizations whose ideas you actually agree with that support like causes and start campaigning for it instead of trying to prove people wrong about this one."

Hmm

Hmm

reply to him. I dont support a campaign which uses just 30% of its 100% of funds towards children, 30% towards their own employees allowance and rest for film making. I also dont support an organization which supports military aggression to resolve a situation involving an army comprised of misled children under Kony's command

You know a kid will kill just the same as an adult, right?

This is fucking serious.

These idiots don't realize they are supporting more deaths by giving these guys attention.

When I try to explain some of these people just shut me down and choose to shit on me....

Damn....

I came to this thread because I just literally saw a minivan in my neighborhood with KONY 2012 written on one of the windows.

What is going on. I've been seeing Kony written everywhere like if a new pop music hit youtube or something. All I know Kony means horses in russian.

At least they're providing information about an important issue to an audience that would otherwise be unaware.

Better to see comments about Kony on Youtube than the usual racism and insults directed at Justin Bieber.

I take back what I said. This Kony shit is becoming extremely irritating, but at least everyone will have forgotten about it in a few weeks and go back to posting rage comics.

Okay. Let me get this straight. Is Kony 2012 actually Phony 2012? Is it true that this issue is nowhere near as prevalent today and what we're being shown is a country's state back in 2006/2007?

If so, very shady.

EDIT: I will acknowledge that he nonetheless needs to be stopped, though.

It's died down completely on my Facebook now, after a few posts pointing out things about the reality of the situation and the group making all the noise.

As interesting as the phenomenon of it spreading so quickly may be how in future people may not be so quick to take everything at face value. That high-production values and pushing emotional buttons can be there to deliberately slant a message, and not give you the full picture of a situation or the proper information needed. And that the raising awareness was as much about raising money and pushing an agenda as anything else.

If people now take the time to actually become better informed and educated on a subject, then that can only be a good result.

I believe has hasn't been seen for a number of years, but the LRA has been active in Congo.

Why?

Pretty much everyone in the world knew who Bin Laden was. It took the full strength of US intelligence ten years to find him.

If awareness =/= faster capture, why is it valuable?

Also if it distorts a situation and whitewashes the same crimes of a Government and military who would be supported in getting him that isn't helpful.

Awareness that is misguided and misinformed isn't awareness, it's propaganda.

Im getting tired of talking about tis shit on Facebook.

A lot of these people are like brick walls and don't listen. Whatever.

How many other warlord are there in Africa guilty of the exact same crimes still out and about? need more funding and US troops to get them too.

And the South Sudan region. They kidnap kids, or outright murder them in heinous ways, rape and torture them, sell some into slavery and keep some to train as soldiers.

Kinda sad that the campaign has backfired a little and that "money" and other stupid things are having a negative impact since whatever they do put into the affected areas is more than if they put nothing and maybe people will seek out other charities that operate in the same area since awareness is being raised. And the people operating on assumptions about Invisible Children are just as clueless as the people who they say are blindly accepting, so that's a bit ironic.

In any case the world is gonna remain a fucked up place for the weak and defenseless, as it always has been and that's never gonna change.

So, you support this bs and then you say this.
I don't understand... why support it in the first place if you think like that?

Because like I said. Even if only 30 cents to every dollar goes to help the kids, that's still a hell of a lot better than nothing. And who knows what this might lead to?

I just see no reason to be against it and I especially see no reason to actively campaign against it, because at the very least I support the message and I think Kony should be held accountable for his crimes and should pay. But that's just my opinion.

What are GAF's favorite charities? I tend to not have enough money to give on a regular basis, but when I do give to an international charity it tends to be Doctors Without Borders. I'll see if I can find something to spare in response to this suspicious Kony 2012 business.

DonorsChoose.org is always great for small amounts.

Not many like kony are left that use child soldiers. Most attrocities in africa now revolve around Tribalistic issues and land.

This is all about moving AfriCom to Uganda, nothing else. We have known about this guy since at least 2006...so why is this just popping up?

The three dudes from Invisible Children are on Pierres Morgan. Listening to them is kind of painful and annoying

gaf pls do this with reactions

What the fuck is a Kony? I went to the site, clicked on video, and its asking me to sign some sort of petition? Just want to see the fucking video.

I really like this article...http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/invisible-children-founders-posing-with-guns-an-interview-with-the-photographer/2012/03/08/gIQASX68yR_blog.html

It's by the photographer who took the picture of the three guys posing with the guns. I definitely got the whole "white man burden" thing from the picture. :/

The SPLA were into it, because they were bored too. People were having a lot of fun videotaping it, taking Polaroids and posing with all of these guys. Everyone was into it.

I think I felt a lot of discomfort, but I didn’t say to stop it, which maybe I should have because if we were attacked by LRA then, the SPLA should have had guns in their hands.

I, surprisingly, haven't seen too much of this on my Facebook feed...and the stuff I did see was criticisms. I stayed out of it, though.

So wait...

Kony has not done anything major in the last 5 years. Northern Uganda is in a relatively peaceful state than it was 5 years ago. The major news is Nodding Disease. When they say Invisible Children does not pay more than 32% directly it is about Awareness. awareness to what? Kony isnt even in Uganda anymore and his power has diminished. So exactly awareness to what?

Do we know for a certainty that Kony is not in Uganda anymore?

It isn't educating at all. It's totally one sided and uninformative. There is also a point where over saturation can bring a negative effect. If this keeps up till April most people will stop caring and grow a negative feeling towards Kony 2012 because it's pissing them off.

2 days later and I'm already at that stage.

I think this is a sobering reminder that in this day and age, people are a little too quick to jump on board with an issue, before they get all the facts. That's usually the case with humanity, but when technology allows us to move so fast, it can be dangerous.

Oh man...Diaspora just DESTROYED Invisible Hands

http://projectdiaspora.org/2012/03/08/respect-my-agency-2012/

All I have to do is show up in my broken English, look pathetic and wanting. You, my dear social media savvy click-activist, will shed a tear, exhaust Facebook’s like button, mobilize your cadre of equally ill-uninformed netizens to throw money at the problem.

Cause, you know, that works so well in the first world.

I would love nothing more than to be telling you the small victories we experience working with the very scarred survivors of Kony’s atrocities. The Women of Kireka are the most resilient group of individuals that I know. Spend a day with them and you will wonder how they manage to so calmly describe to you watching their entire families burned alive, their husbands and children hacked to death, in front of them. They do it so calmly, methodically, with such articulate prose that it leaves your soul victimized for it’s privilege. Yet they don’t pause from rolling a perfectly crafted paper bead for a beautiful necklace. They don’t waste their time lamenting the lack of justice for the fallen or the abducted. Why? Because it doesn’t bring back the dead, it doesn’t dissolve the horrific images of their huts burning, or ease the scars borne of running scared into the night.

Instead, they want work and respect and business to be able to make decisions that move their lives along. They want desperately to forget and rebuild anew; thankful for their lives. They want radios and cell phones and grasp at any semblance of normalcy. They cuddle and nurse their newborns like delicate, cherished gifts. What they don’t talk about is justice. They talk about how to forgive and move on.

But I can’t tell you their story. Why? Someone else has taken over their part in this complex saga, simplified it, branded it, packaged it and is reselling it as an Action Kit. For as little as $30 and up to $500, you get your very own pimplicious t-shirt (that was made somewhere other than Uganda or Africa) and various assortments of SWEDOW you won’t care about in a month. But hey! At least you did something!

They have whipped out their wallets and bought their very own Super Hero activist action kits. They have bombarded their friend’s Facebook wall with ignominious updates.

“You must watch this! I already ordered my action kit!”

If we all start from the premise that Kony’s actions over the last 25 years in East and Central Africa are atrocious and he should be stopped, we would be cut of the same moral cloth. Evil is something that is easy to point out from afar. But if we conclude that any one individual/organization/group has the right to hijack the voice of so many in the name of good, then I have a common sense pill to sell you.

Let me be honest. Africa is not short of problems, epidemics and atrocities. But it is also true that it is not short of miracles, ingenuity, and a proclivity to surprise. We as Africans, especially the Diaspora, are waking to the idea that our agency has been hijacked for far too long by well-meaning Western do-gooders with a guilty conscious, sold on the idea that Africa’s ills are their responsibility. This particular affliction is called “white man’s burden” in some circles. Please don’t buy into this. Africa’s problems are our own.

I am coherent enough to realize when someone is trying to genuinely do good. At the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong with assuming that the people who you are trying to help 1) need help, 2) want your help, or 3) can’t help themselves. IC and this video assumes all the above. Before anyone says ‘why haven’t you done anything to stop Kony?’, may I point out that it took the world’s most sophisticated army over a decade and billions of dollars to catch Osama bin Laden. Kony has been on the run for 25+ years. On a continent 3 times the size of America. Catching & stopping him is not a priority of immediate concern. You know what is? Finding a bed net so that millions of kids don’t die every day from malaria. How many of you know that more Ugandans died in road accidents last year (2838) than have died in the past 3 years from LRA attacks in whole of central Africa(2400)? We’ve picked our battles and we chose to simply try to live. And the world should be helping us live on our own terms, by respecting our agency to choose which battles to put capacity towards.

I’ve never heard of Germans running NGOs in [the United States of] America to try and fix the economy or Swedish NGOs in America trying to fix the declining standard of living. Africa is our problem, we hereby respectfully request you let us handle our own matters. We will make mistakes here and there, sure. That is expected. But the trade-off of writing our own destiny far outweighs the self-assigned guilt the world assigned to us. If you really want to help, keep the guilt and charity in your backyard. Bring instead, respect, and the humility to let us determine our destiny.

Thanks. Encapsulates and articulates my thoughts on the matter better than I could have, or want to put the effort to do. It's dificult to explain to people why I feel so frustrated, and somewhat angry, at the kneejerk reactions to this Kony saga, from people who have never heard of the guy before but think they are sufficiently educated after watching a slickly produced youtube video to be so opinionated about the issue, and to advertise without humility they have 'contributed', and spamming everyone to do the same. Something thats been happening for decades which they've been blissfully ignorant of, and having not spared a second of thought to, is now the thing they're most passionate about. A couple days later (or hours) they'll completely forget about this whole issue, and won't bother to do any real, independent research beyond what they've spoonfed. They'll then move on to the next 'cause' which happens to be the fad of the week, not bothering to do more than skim the surface of every cause they're so quickly to be so passionate opinionated about, and just as quickly lose interest in. To me, this is nothing but intellectual and moral laziness, ignorance, and a narcissistic, self-benefitting cycle of puffing up ones ego to make themselves believe they're a force of good and virtue in the world. IMO this does more harm than good, because it simplifies and misrepresents the issues at play, as well as compromising and undermining the people actually doing real work in that area.
