Kotaku: Silent Hills officially cancelled

Maybe now Kojima can make his own horror game with Del Toro starring Reedus.
Quiet Mountains.
I dare to say that Kojima will never make proper AAA games again after the parting from Konami.
Barely any big name dev managed to do so without a big publisher behind his back after going independent. The only one I can think of is Kamija.

I'd be very interested in terms of the contract in terms documenting the relationship between Konami and KojiPro as its subsiduary.

In their own terms recently someone described KojiPro effectively being contracters under Konami. If only it were as simple as another Publisher taking KojiPro under it's wing - you'd think that would be a no brainer. Alas I don't think it will be feasible and Kojima will go the way of Yu Suzuki in terms of output in his later years.

What a shame. Konami is like the equivalent of

The one thing that made people outside Japan pronounce the Konami name was gaming and, besides PES, they're running it to the ground.

Konami makes a ton of money internationally through its gambling/amusement business, they're definitely a known entity in the casino/slots industry.

PT was really fantastic looking. This tease of the full Silent Hills running on the Fox Engine on current gen only....hot damn... :(

This is the real down-side.

Fox Engine was a huge investment that Konami and Kojima made.
Who keeps it? Well Konami most probably.
How long will it take for Kojima to rebuild an engine that doesn't break Konami's copyright over Fox Engine?

Again this is interesting. You'd think it would be being utilized to the max but I just get the sneaky suspicion TPP and this years PES are going to be its lot.

Kojima/Konami fallout must have been rather serious for them to just scrap this. I mean, PT had an overwhelming positive feedback, it had 3 important guys on board, it would revitalize a semi-dead franchise most surely and they scrap it over some beef with Kojima.

Kojima must have really pissed them off if they are prepared to scorch the earth like this. Going through and removing the guy's name from old projects is going above and beyond. Sounds personal.

Hmm I dunno. If I were running Konami even if the actions of one man had annoyed me, I'd understand his name carries weight in an industry where I was still to release a large, expensive project (TPP) so wouldn't remove his name in the way they are doing.

It doesn't strike me as personal - it strikes me as all out leaving the console gaming industry and just leaving enough metaphorical lights on to get TPP out the door before going nuclear in terms of announcing 'slot machines and mobile for us' on September 2nd. There's still so many unknowns in this equation - maybe Kojima demanded his name removed from all projects for reasons unknown (personally doesn't want to be associated with Konami more than he has to be)?

It's odd that they're actively looking for a new team to continue Metal Gear, though. I doubt that'll be mobile.

It's just not clear WHAT their play is going to be. It seems like they want out but why claim that Silent Hill and Metal Gear will continue then?

If the issue they had with Kojima was money and time related, then that's likely what they want from these games. They'll keep them around with developers that can make them on smaller budgets and in less time than KojiPro could.

I think by claiming Metal Gear and Silent Hill will continue they've gotta mean mobile. The implication that Kojima and Del Toro may look to be involved in future Silent Hill from their Q&A responses is absolutely hillarious

If thats accurate and Konami forced the issue, I can imagine myself as Kojima (having poured himself into the Metal Gear Solid series in particular for nigh on the last 20 years) saying 'fine, I'm out and take my god-damn name off everything I touched for you because you are terrible. I'll loiter until TPP is out the door but then get lost'

I'm sure there will be at least two or three publishers interesting in contracting Kojima for some games, but they're probably more interested in his gameplay than his storytelling. I can't see him getting carte blanche on something as massive as MGS unless he goes to work for a publisher like Sony or MS.

Is Kojima innocent ?

What do you think ?

Whether guilty or innocent ultimately it's not his call.

I'm more interested as to what (if much at all) work was done on developing Silent Hills beyond P.T. We were shown nothing. No concept drawings beyond P.T. No pictures. No people talking about it beyond the buzzwords from Kojima. Zero. Zip.

In terms of Kojimas various other activities and wrapping up TPP, purely IMO, I don't think it had got off the ground beyond the initial concept. If Konami are moving out of the big console business which I'm inclined to believe is behind all this, committing to a two year intensive dev cycle to get it out the door was not going to happen.

Wasn't there a video of experience "concepts" they built in addition to PT? I'm sure I saw something freaky complete with unpleasant stuff happening to kids.

I don't recall that and would be keen to see it

RE: The Fox Engine ownership, this quote from Wiki is interesting

“ In the past I've mentioned Silent Hill in interviews, and as a result of that the president of Konami rung me up and said he'd like me to make the next Silent Hill. Honestly, I'm kind of a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror movies, so I'm not confident I can do it. At the same time, there's a certain type of horror that only people who are scared of can create, so maybe it's something I can do. That said, I think Silent Hill has a certain atmosphere. I think it has to continue, and I'd love to help it continue, and if I can help by supervising or lending the technology of the Fox Engine, then I'd love to participate in that respect.[4]

'Lending' the technology of the Fox Engine implies Konami couldn't use it without his consent?

I dunno.

Is there any way for the Konami board members to question whether or not the current CEO is qualified for the position at Konami? - and thereafter seek a new candidate? It seems like a puzzling decision after the positive response.

It's as if they produced something great just to tear it down again. It doesn't sound logical without a reasonable explaination.

This is the one - warning watching may make you sad if you were excited for Silent Hills game.

you mean that teaser from TGS – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVylTfkDP5c ?

Edit: Beaten! Yes that's the one.

If they started a kickstarter with just a picture of Reedus, Kojima and Del Toro they would make millions.

Ditch Reedus and save money. He contributed zero to everything I enjoyed about P.T. That isn't a slight against him though.

There was a thread made earlier about people suggesting they bombard Konami with negative feedback before it got closed.

I was wondering about maybe we do a thread about the opposite approach: bombard Sony (a company who has at the very least responded to fan feedback of late) to restart the project as their own original horror game, with Kojima and company at the helm.

This is about the best outcome I could hope for, so why not rally together and let Sony know how much we want it?

I think this is the best way to do it. If not Sony, at least another company willing to fund the project. I was surprised that Silent Hills managed to trend worldwide, which goes to show that despite being a niche game, it's still one of the most well-known gaming brands, and PT managed to gain massive appeal. It may also goes to show there was a demand for a good Silent Hill game, or a similar project with the same names attached. If there was a drive to get this project done, there might be another company willing to finance Kojima and Del Toro.

I'm all in for whatever operation people have in mind.

The bar has been set so high that the next Silent Hill game from some other developer will be compared with this concept forever, and it'll have no chance of measuring up

That's somewhat a hollow exagerration. At this point we don't even know if SIlent Hills would've been a renowned succes. That's pure speculation.

Sure, they would make a lot of money. Maybe more than Pillars of Eternity, Broken Age, Mighty No. 9, etc. But nowhere near enough to make a game of the kind they were intending, with visuals like those seen in PT or the Silent Hills teaser (at the end of PT), and most likely not with the scope of older Silent Hill games either.

Ditch Reedus and save money. He contributed zero to everything I enjoyed about P.T. That isn't a slight against him though.

I agree with that. But then I don't watch TWD and have no particular interest in the guy. In fact, keep it first person and they don't need to pay for anyone's likeness; rather than using a famous TV or film actor, use a voice actor within the industry and it will probably be a lot cheaper.

If the production wasn't pretty much wrapped with only fixes ongoing, I'd be worried. As it stands, 99.98% against - but Konami are currently insane.

I can't see it happening but my god the bloodbath if it did. Would be the biggest internet meltdown of all time.

Konami lost their god damn minds. Getting rid of Kojima made them irrelevant and now I don't give a flying fuck.

damn was I looking forward ti Silent Hills...

Kind of amazing in a way. This is the studio that brought us Contra, Metal Gear, Castlevania, Suikoden, Goemon, Silent Hill, Sparkster, Gradius, TMNT, and a whole slew of other classic games... and each and every last one of them is dead.

You can't even attribute this to mismanagement. This is deliberately, spitefully, not giving a shit any more.

I would mention Pop'n'Twinbee, one of the greatest vertical shooters of the 16bit era
Cute, fun, excellent graphics and incredible OST
I miss it SO much

Also Bomberman. Konami bought Hudson only to not even use their IPs. I still would have loved to play Bomberman 3DS and Mario Party hasn't been the same without Hudson.
