I don't get the point of making a PS4 that just aims for the 4K market when that model of TV's penetration is low.
That's what Nintendo thought when it launched the Wii.
Let's assume PS5 is in development. When it launches, years from now, clearly the goal would be to have native 4k output since the installed base of 4k TVs will be much higher at that point.
As many posters have pointed out, going after that kind of target prior to around 2019 is very cost prohibitive.
So, when would it not be so cost prohibitive? 2020? 20211? That's a 7 or 8 year cycle. Feels about right, no?
But today, it's 2016. That's 4 or 5 years to go. 4 to 5 years of 4k TVs that need to be sold and then supported.
How do you do that if the PS5 is so far out if not with an iteration on the existing hardware?
