Kotaku: Unfortunately, Quantum Break Looks a Bit Rubbish

Status
Not open for further replies.
Honestly did look sort of dull to me. Rubbish is a bit much, though.

I've enjoyed all of Remedy's past work so just hoping they have bring some of that magic to this. Keeping the faith until I can actually play it.

The forced TV parts must've came about from that whole Xbox Entertainment initiative headed by that ex CBS pres. They were going to make this a complete TV series at one point weren't they? Probably they thought, better not let that footage go to waste and just splice it into the game.

One garbage article from kotaku based on videos we've already seen, and suddenly people are piling on the nonsense and concerns.

If this is based on video we have in our hands why is kotakus garbage article written for shock value specifically after all the praise was given, why is their opinion carrying more weight then anyone else here?

Err, maybe they did all those things for the purposes of showing them. I doubt you will need to use all the skills like that while playing. It's probably just going to end up being like Infamous: SS, where you got a whole bunch of things at your disposal and you can use whichever you want.
Perhaps, but the demo they showed prior to the gamescom one was pretty much the same, it's just that in this one there was more of the story element on show.

I think a lot of hate from the game stems from the fact that it's an X1 game. If you think about it, Uncharted is a very pretty but generic game, but it has a fun story. Same with Last of Us. From what we've seen of Horizon, it's Tomb Raider but with mechanical dinosaurs, but a lot of people are still excited by it. Were that an X1 exclusive, some same arguments that the game looks good but generic might be said. The gameplay for all of them is pretty generic, but that doesn't make them less fun. Bloodbourne did nothing new, it's almost a reskin of Dark Souls, but it's still a fun game that is in GOTY contention. Let's look at Sunset Overdrive, that was a fun, fast-paced game, but that got shitted on as well by a lot of people because it was an X1 game. Had that game been on PS4, it may have gotten GOTY.

Wow... Just, wow. SSO is great fun, but do you honestly believe that crap you're typing?

they have seen more behind closed doors than the videos that we have seen so it is a valid opinion. he was excited by the videos that we all saw and then when he saw the game being played behind closed doors and how everything ties together he felt it was rubbish. i don't know why people find it hard to digest.

The live action segments were always part of the game. From 2013...

So you play an episode of the game, you do certain junction points and choices along the way, and once you get to the end, we unlock an episode of the show. You get to watch it and see the consequences of the choices you’ve made in the game.

More info

In the same interview he likens the live-action sequences to the comics in Max Payne that played out between chapters, this is just a different format he thought was better suited for telling the story.

I think a lot of hate from the game (The Order) stems from the fact that it's an PS4 game. If you think about it, Halo is a very pretty but generic game, but it has a fun story. Same with Gears of War. From what we've seen of Quatum Break, it's Uncharted but with time powers, but a lot of people are still excited by it. Were that an PS4 exclusive, some same arguments that the game looks good but generic might be said. The gameplay for all of them is pretty generic, but that doesn't make them less fun. Titanfall did nothing new, it's almost a reskin of Call of Duty, but it's still a fun game that is in GOTY contention. Let's look at Driveclub, that was a fun, fast-paced game, but that got shitted on as well by a lot of people because it was an PS4 game. Had that game been on XB1, it may have gotten GOTY.

You've been criticized enough for being so wildly off the mark, but I thought I'd add my own thoughts.

Neogaf's reception of a game very closely mirrors that of its Metacritic score. The only Uncharted that is widely celebrated on Neogaf is the second one, which boasts 96 on Metacritic. The Last of Us has 95. Bloodborne has 92.

Sunset Overdrive, meanwhile, has 81, which corresponds nicely with Neogaf's generally lukewarm reception thereof.

Ori of the Blind Forest has 89 on Metacritic and loved by Neogaf. Additionally, Cuphead is an X1 exclusive and it has a ton of hype everywhere, Neogaf including.

And considering that Horizon is open world, the heavy comparison to Tomb Raider seems very daft. Not to mention "just with mechanical dinosaurs" is a pretty extreme deviation from Tomb Raider's modus operandi.

U really think remedy went, lets redesign the game to make use of the footage that won't air 1.5 years ago? Also let's do motion capture with the actors and...

Common that's a stretch. The comparisons with the order are also a stretch.

I loved Alan Wake and I appreciate what they're trying to do here to combine both Game and Live-Action.

That said, I am a bit concerned about being "forced" (by forced, I'm talking you being pulled from game into live-action just like that) to watch tv-length live cutscenes to flesh out the story. Yeah, you can skip them, but that will make me feel as though I'm missing out on the whole story and narrative.

I'm just not entirely sure how going from playing a game one moment to jumping right into watching a TV show the next will work in terms of the feeling. I at least tend to have different "Mental States" or mindsets for playing games and watching tv.

I don't think they have do, u have proof of that? Did u hear of any other closed door demos of the game from the media? I don't recall this. They should have stated they saw a closed door demo in the article. I think they saw nothing more then what we saw and the writter just decided they didn't like it. The arguments in the article are extremely flimsy.

Again why should we give wieght to one view on the same video we have all seen?

Do you even live in the real world?

You are not forced. The tv content focuses on the enemies. I'm certain you can play through without neededing to watch it,but u might miss some clues.

It stems from the fact it had boring gunplay and only 2.5 hours of it without much replay value and nothing but cutscenes.

Oh I see what ur doing... Cheeky monkey

I hope this is some epic trolling.

What's that gif from? I must watch!

TV show integration sounds great to me.

I love video games and I love TV. Putting two of my favorite things together seems like a natural idea. They just have to go with the right TV show. A cover shooter where you have to watch episodes of Seinfeld at the end of each level, now that's purrfect.

I want QB to be great, but from the initial showings I was always hesitant to form an opinion as little gameplay was shown. What we saw recently felt like it was still very rough in terms of how they are working the time altering mechanics into gameplay, but it's safe to say that with enough time Remedy can have a solid shooter with interesting aspects in the gameplay. We'll have to wait for more public media.

Doctor Who! Second season of newer run, I think.

Eh, game looks really cool to me but it's his opinion.

It is unusual to put out an article like this about a game so far out though. If it comes out to critical acclaim people will be bringing this up again and again.

This can't be a serious post.

How on earth are some people missing the dozen or so posts quoting bpd but reading relaxed muscles post only and thinking it's serious and not a parody of bpds?

I don't think there's anything about the videos I've seen that looks remotely rubbish. I could see someone maybe saying dull, as you suggest, but all the time powers look phenomenal, and could be incredibly fun to use. Perhaps gameplay seems a bit slow at first, but I imagine that once you get your hands on the controls, it will all make sense in the way blasting powers in Mass Effect, but having to constantly halt gameplay just felt awesome when playing.

I suppose we'll see how the TV series aspect pans out, every criticism otherwise could easily be leveled at Uncharted, which is a game that I initially thought looked 'dull' until I played it and understood its significant charms. I suppose that indicates that Quantum Break could live and die by the strength of its story and characters, but Remedy has never let me down, Sam Lake knows his shit. I think the game looks incredible.

What is going in this thread? All these greyed out names. Can someone fill me in?

Basically mostly people trying to call kotaku shit journalists and/or asking for kotaku to be banned. There was a warning by a mod in the thread too but some continued to do it.

I find it interesting you call the article a "garbage article" in another post and the arguments "extremely flimsy", considering you haven't actually read the article at all, apparently. Otherwise you might have picked up on a few cues that give away Kotaku attended an (extended) presentation at gamescom and didn't just write an article based on the trailer. Like, for instance:

The presenter running the demo showed off a gunfight against some hired goons.
Despite having actors like Aidan Gillen and Lance Reddick from The Wire and Dominic Monaghan from Lord of the Rings, the performances in the scenes we were shown were, like the gunplay, dull.

Or, if you had watched the QB gamescom footage like you said you did, this might have tipped you off as well because it's not actually in any of the trailers:
Out of combat you can use the abilities to help with environment puzzles. The demo kicked off with Jack chasing the villain, Paul Serene, through a shipyard. Paul escapes in a helicopter but before he goes he throws a time bubble at one of the ships near Jack.
For instance, in one case you can choose between being ‘Hardline’ and ‘PR’. (Two terms that don’t exactly inform you about the decision you’re making.) This decision then plays out in the episode. If you chose ‘Hardline’ then the episode will include a scene where Paul’s men capture a witness of their more clandestine acts. Rather than risk her telling people what she saw, they kill her. If you chose ‘PR’ then you will see a different scene, one where Paul’s men will threaten the safety of her family and she will agree to help them. She will also remain a character in the story and have an effect on the game.

They had big plans for the TV studio, it just didn't work out. QB was being developed as a cornerstone of a system that doesn't really exist anymore(ask Harmonix about that).

That doesn't mean that there's no good ideas there, but it'll mostly likely be a one and done kind of game.

Damn rights. Well...unless the story and live action stuff ends up not as good as I am hoping, but I think it looks pretty amazing otherwise.

Usually we expect any live action thing associated with videogames to be garbage but Dark Falls was so amazing and well done that I'm giving Remedy the benefit of the doubt.

Only thing that really concerns me about this criticism is him saying that what he saw of the live action he found dull. Cliche and hammy can be fine, like the "this is not a new concept" criticism, that's not an inherently bad thing. Dull though, pretty much is.

In the final paragraph he says the gunplay isn't lively or satisfying. I found that the opposite was the case in Max Payne and Alan Wake, and it looks fine to me in the Gamescom demo, so, eh.
Unlike with Bullet Time, there are enemies in Quantum Break who wear special suits that protect them from your time powers. Their presence will complicate skirmishes, but you just have to dash up them and shoot them with a shotgun. Again, special enemies who specifically counter your abilities is nothing new.
The rest is fine or whatever, but here he's basically criticizing the game for featuring an enemy that's designed to encourage the player to vary up their tactics, use different tools, move in a different manner etc. Design that's a fundamental building block of any game featuring combat to any significant degree. It's nothing new? Like, at this point you might as well complain about how being able to look up and down is nothing new. It's just nonsense criticism completely void of any value.

Whereas Kotaku is an example of turd journalism, Quantum Break does seem like a more expensive Singularity/Timeshift manifestation.

At this rate, do not want. The TV series thing is almost guaranteed to be complete shit.At least The Order had a cool setting. QB looks so generic it acts like Ambien.
You mean zolpidem.
look it up folks

Yeah, NeoGAF totally hates The Wonderful 101 (75) and Wolfenstein: The New Order (81)./s

Didn't Shinobi say something like this for the order too?

I don't know who to believe anymore.

There's always people hyping up the next big AAA release regardless of how good it is. I take anything 'insiders' or PR people say with a grain of salt these days. Of course if this type of cover shooter lines up with your tastes then you'll at least have as good time I'd imagine, but personally I'm never getting on a hype train again. Good stuff will come when it comes.

Based on the Gamescom footage I thought it looked pretty cool. All I want it a fun third person shooter, so the time stopping things looks neat. Graphics are pretty too

A lot of people are bringing the order in here for no reason. I don't know but the order 1886 is one of my favorite games this gen. So this game may turn out to be a similar case.
