Kotaku: Why PS4's higher resolution than Xbox One matters

So it doesn't matter then, outside of platform warriors?

It matters in so much as there IS a difference, and it was foolish for some outlets to suddenly get defensive about it and claim it's identical, but in the grand scheme of things, games are what matter.

My god nobody cares about this crap. I own both system both look great. I play my Xbone more because it has better games. I played PS4 for a solid week until Xbone was released.

Haven't touch it since. They need games.

I care.

If you don't, avoid threads with RESOLUTION in the title.

So you're alleging that there was a backroom deal between the reviewer and the publisher, simply because their score didn't align with the number in your mind?

Not at all. I am just saying that for launches it seems reviewers have a hard time giving games lower scores (note, the review reads to me a lot lower) because it is a new system. I don't think any review place (including Polygon) have "backroom" deals for scores.

I've been gaming on pc at 1080p for ages and watching all tv in full hd. Every time I try to watch something at 720p I spot the difference instantly and its pretty disappointing. Maybe it's my eyes God only knows but it's a very obvious difference from 720p to 1080p for me.

That's interesting post for junior account from middle november with only 2 posts in history ;)

Your definition of a "lower" score is a 1/10. Which are rarely given out to begin with, save for games that are so fundamentally broken and dysfunctional they barely qualify as being in a playable state

Of course people care, but there isn't enough of a difference to lose sleep over.

Maybe you got lost on the way here but this is a gaming forum. People discuss games here, and they usually have a pretty passionate opinion about them and can be quite particular about enjoying them to the fullest. The fact that the PS4 is so demonstrably trouncing the Xbone on performance is likely to be of interest to quite a lot of people here, so it's probably best not to attempt to speak for "everyone" when this is the crowd to whom you're referring.

And I fully expect this gen to be a 720p gen. The first thing that suffers when devs look for more power is resolution.

Please point us towards any solid evidence that games' native resolution go down over the course of a console's lifetime.

Correct. Kinect likely costs an extra $80 - $120.

Didn't think it was even close to that. That's pretty crazy but it may be worth it in the end. A friend of mine got this last week and his favorite feature so far is the workout app
which does sound kind of great to be honest
.

But it's not. I have both systems and I play Xbox One much more than my PS4 because I like the games better, and all my friends stayed with Xbox. The Resolution thing doesn't even matter to 99% of most people buying these consoles. This time around it's going to be where peoples friends play, since we now live in a socially connected world. Anyways, I love both systems, but based on what I've seen so far Ryse is the best looking next gen title hands down!

With the exception of Halo Microsoft has shot all is ammunition, whereas Sony has barely fired anything. Do you think naughty dog, thatgamecompany, media molecule, polyphony digital, team ICO, Santa Monica, sucker punch, quantic dream, Insomniac are siting on their hands???

With the exception of killzone Sony hasnt fired any of their big guns....yet.

Are you playing any multiplatform games on Xbox One? I hope you don't think the Xbox One doesn't need more games for launch window soon.

Agreed, the Xbone won't go far with a 2005 resolution in 2013.

Launch games on 360 were not rendered in full 720p. They still are not rendered in 720p much less 1080p. They were upscaled after the fact. So what point are you trying to make except troll?

I do care. I sit about 6 feet away from a 73 inch screen and 720p looks like shit compared to 1080p. I haven't bought my 180 yet but when I do all multiplats will be for PS4. I have no problem playing at lower resolutions if the game is fun but if I have a choice I'm going to get the better performing one and that'll be PS4 until I build a new PC.

For what it's worth I fully respect that you don't mind the difference. Everyone is different. But some people do care.

Own an XB1 and of course it matters.

I own an XB1 too and I think it matters, but lets put something in perspective.

There were 12 multiplat games released on each system and only 3 have different resolutions. AC, COD,BF. You would think its the whole catalog the way some make it out to be.

I wonder if it really matters. A lot of people will be playing on 720p television sets. I wonder if there are statistics on that.

Why is this still a topic worthy of discussion? 1080p is better than 720p, most people will notice the difference, and it all comes down to the games. The end. I swear, "game journalists" seem to love to just keep reigniting this silly argument.

But his argument is the same as yours, so what's the problem?

You're delusional if you think Halo is the only AAA title Microsoft has for the ONE next year.

He makes a good point. Microsoft has the exclusives at launch. Outside of a 399 price point the PS4 does not offer anything compelling over the Xbone. If you care about full 1080 at 60fps then so be it, if not, why get the 4 at launch?

Of course it matters especially when we're dealing with consoles that will share 90% of their game library and the better performance wise console is cheaper.

Yes you felt the need to respond in here though hmm? Also, nice first posts.

Forza, Dead Rising and Ryse don't strike me as system sellers. Neither have them.

I hate when they write 'and this is why it matters'. No, that's why it matters to you, some of us can make up our own minds on the subject.

I think the biggest concern is the future.

What happens when these ps4 games need to be at 720p in 3-4 years? What will Xbox one games be?

As i was saying in that other thread, this is not as bad as it is worrying for the 5 next years. The XBO is a 500$ console that is not able to run the launch line up (even its own exclusive titles like KI) in HD. Some people really think in one or two years, 10 times more demanding and impressive titles like the division or whatever else will run better ? This will be a catastrophe.

Also lol at xbox fans always stating as fact that xbox has the best exclusives. That's pretty subjective..

As a couple of other posters pointed out, resolution is just a symptom of the problem. Sure every Xbone game that comes out could be 1080p 60. In order to do so, they will need to compromise on level of detail/effects. The PS4 has more horsepower than the xbox one. The extra horsepower is real and it is going to go somewhere. Any way you look at it however, both systems are weak vs. a decent PC. In 3 years the PC master race will have even more of a reason to laugh at us console peasants.

Honest question, is the Xbox One not capable of running CoD Ghosts at 1080p/60fps? Is it's hardware too weak or is does it have more to do with it being hard to develop for?

Is it possible we could see next years CoD game running at 1080p/60fps as developers become more familiar with the hardware?

It comes well after the biggest holiday sales weekend of the year, and well after all the nonsense from other media outlets.

Do you realize that PS3 only owners (like myself) had to hear about the "superior" versions of 3rd party games for years. And I was the first to acknowledge that they should talk about why the 360 versions looked or ran better.

That information should never be held back, even if it's late.
