KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

My switch setup was to literally just make sure my settings were the same as op and brightness about 5 or 6 in the dark

I do not to need to change a thing to make it look good and certainly don't need dynamic contrast. Yall drinking some kool-aid.

This pro controller is outstanding. You forget your holding it.

Ugh it looks absolutely horrible without some DC enabled. Coming from someone who has it optimzed for PS4 Pro. I'd love to see some justification/reasoning behind the switch settings you have Haines. The game is 100% washed out if I use the PS4 Pro settings outlined in the OP.

I mean. It looked great to me was my justification. Turning dc washes it out for me, so we have the exact opposite opinions oddly enough. Can you explain why you would set the switch to full rgb and not automatic?

A quick google brought up an ign forum post saying that the automatic funtion is broke? I will try full and normal to see if it looks diff

Ive been playing many many hours in handheld mode bc that runs better etc. Ill play some on the tv now to see what i think compared to that.

As far as gamma 3, im assuming just cranking it to 3 would destroy your picture quality. Anything i ever saw reccomended for this tv was 1 or -1 depending on time of day.

I would like to do some research into exactly what gamma does.

Just got done playing some more horizon and jesus does the hdr do wonders for that game. The lighting is just insane. devs need to get hdr in every game like this going forward

I've been trying DC off with gamma at 2 and it seems to be working wonders, swear it didn't have as much impact before the 1165 update though.

HDR is great, this game is suited really well to it. The best bits are how the grass looks, lighting, and of course the sparks and explosions from the machines. Caverns look amazing also, they've made the most of the hdr with the patterns on the ground and the lights across the extended bridges.

For switch

Tried rgb full.normal instead of auto auto

It certainly doesn't look worse thats for sure so I will leave it on these settings to be safe. Good call

You have to understand, the Netflix HDR shows I'm describing are broken. Something, somewhere, is not working. I'm not someone who wants more pop from their picture - I've found most HDR content spectacular.

The OA and Santa Clarita Diet are fucked up. Maybe it's Netflix, maybe it's the TV, maybe it's both. The only fixes seem to be Dynamic Contrast, or cranking the gamma. The picture quality can't be destroyed when it's broken to start with. It's about figuring out the best fix possible. Given the nature of DC, I suspect it will be the less accurate fix. Gamma essentially tweaks a specific type of brightness, as I understand it. But it fixes the Netflix HDR without using DC, and I still need to experiment to see if it's worth leaving it increased for content that otherwise looks good.

I found it improved RE7's already superb picture by bringing out details the were previously obscured. Subjectively it looks better to me, but I need to do more research to see if there are any tradeoffs.

Ok I'm a believer in no dynamic contrast now. Took me a little bit to come around because I am not a fan of overly-dark nighttime in games.

So i accidentally noticed how subdued the hdr effect during game mode can be. I forgot to switch it back to game mode after watching a bluray and the horizon visuals blew me away all over again. I checked the settings and it seems That Sharpness was set to 100, dynamic contrast was high and color space was set to native. Game mode lowers several other values as well.

I'd highly recommend people just use standard picture settings for hdr if you want to see eue popping visuals. I personally turned it off because it was too bright and the sharpness was killing my eyes. But there is no doubt that the picture looked amazing.

I have a question about the apps..I watch WWE Network and whenever I watch one of their PPVs(I am going to watch fastlane tonight) you can see the black bars on the side..when the show loads at first it goes full screen but then it quickly goes back to having the black bars on the side is there any way to fix that I prefer full screen

That's strange, maybe an issue with the app itself? WWE Network doesn't do that on the Apple TV app, maybe run the app with a PS4/X1...?

If I may weigh in on the auto switching issue, it almost sounds like two problems.

One, the Switch dock may be doing something wrong converting the USB C to HDMI and activating a signal every time the Switch pulls a trickle charge through the USB that is interpreted as an active HDMI source signal by the Samsung.

Secondly, the Samsung's should include an option to ignore and not auto switch input to new perceived HDMI sources.

Anyway, this is just my conjecture on what could be going on and is backed up by nothing but educated guess.

I prefer watching it straight from the TV itself..its weird cause the app will load just fine, and the show will stream, but after about oh 10 seconds it goes back to having the two black bars on the side, not sure why

I've said this about few times in this thread but no reply. Just got horizon zero dawn and switching ps4 pro to 1080p results in a far sharper picture. Same exact settings as 2160p. I've noticed this with uncharted 4 too and any other 1080p game. Could someone put their ps4 pro into 1080p and see what they think. I use sharpness 21.

Seems weird that 1080p gives a sharper picture. Obviously the TV is doing some upscaling algorithm but I think I prefer 1080p up scaled by tv.

Played with upping the gamma settings in Last Guardian and really didn't like the results.

But then I messed with dynamic contrast and 'high' looked so much better, but my rational brain told me to at least bump it down to low.

I just can't let go of that artificially inflated 'pop' of contrast. It looks so much better, and the detail loss seemed so negligible when standing just inches away.

Regarding the discussion about the switch and different hdmi-channel: I have the same problem but with my computer. Is there any way to turn off the TV autoswitching to new active inputs? My computer is often in sleep mode but it randomly pops out for a few seconds sometimes. Every time the TV switches to the empty HDMI-channel that goes to the computer. I missed half a cutscene today because of this. There should be an option to turn this off, right?

I went diving into the samsung and avsforums, and apparently there is no fix for this, which is absolutely incredibly annoying to me.

Waiting for the day that the entire family is over watching a movie, then the cat bumps my mouse and twenty tabs of horrible porn immediately blast at grandma.

With my KS8500 I lose HDR when running in 1080p. The TV seems to only do HDR in 2K/4K mode. As soon as I switched the resolution to 1080p, the video output information on the PS4 showed HDR not supported.

Yeah horizon does night time dark.

Just make sure the in game brightness is probably at 50 pe cent in horizon. A lot of people fall into the trap of those things and often they are broken, If your settings on tv are right they can usually be left at default.

I have messed with dc from the start of ths thread to this very day. Every game it just kills my blacks and the brightness just looks false.

But im lucky that i play in the dark where hdr shines,

I'm one of those people that ends up never updating firmware because I feel like it will break something or make something worse. I think I'm still on 1155, is there any reason to update or NOT update ? What did they change or improve in the several updates since then ?

Yeah im on the same one as you. I havent read of any major improvements that warrant me upgrading.

Yeah, also happening to me on the KS9000. Pretty annoying. Maybe the Switch is right though, maybe it knows best... maybe I should turn you back on and keep playing you. Hmm... yes.

You know, I'm not a difficult guy. I'd be fine with that if the Switch offered a GD option to turn it off from the menu and not having to get up and touch the device itself! This is all so stupid -- Nintendo and Samsung are both messing up!

My KS8000 hates my switch. Every time i try to use it I get a notice to "Set up HDMI4" and it goes into details that are completely irrelevant. I don't want to re-set up a cable provider on that port, etc....it's frustrating.

I hit cancel every time, is there a way to just tell it to stop?

So it's been several months, several updates, and they've improved ... nothing ... ?

Question... I'll be getting my 55 inch in about two weeks and was wondering if I need to have two different settings for gaming and watching on Netflix? Or is there one settings i can use to enjoy both world?

I'm planning on buy a 4K tv next month, is this KS8000 still the best for gaming or has a new challenger emerged?
Honestly for the money theres like three contendors. The ks8000, vizio p, and sony x850d ( i think thats the model). Ks8000 is very bright and great for day use. Vizio p has better blacks. Sony i hear for some looks a tad better when watching bluray? All these ive read from reviews

This is odd - I have an original PS4 and played Uncharted 4 with HDR on. That was 1080, so I wonder why the Pro won't support it?

My KS8000 looks terrible when watching blu rays. Blu rays looked fantastic on my 2015 4k Sony but I sold that one because it did not have HDR which was a mistake. Blu rays look so bad on my KS8000 I want to get rid of it and get a Sony again.

Terrible in what way? 1080p blurays look just as good as on my older, 1080p set. 4k blurays look incredible. This is on a ks9000, but PQ should be similar between the 2.

Grainy and I tried sharpness settings from 0 to 100. Amazon video and Youtube look really good though so dunno why blu rays look so bad. My bluray players are a PS4 Pro and a Xbox One S.

I remember watching Jurassic World 1080p blu ray on my 4k Sony and the upscaling on it was really good, like 4k video.

Blurays look great on mine. Try HDR+ mode, I use that for Bluray.

It does night time dark, but there's lots of shiny things which look amazing in HDR. Moonlight on grassy areas looks just phenomenal!

I think I solved the brightness issue!

Just had more time to double check and there definitely is a bug in the firmware. After updating to 1165 and resetting the TV settings, HDR is much brighter and does not require Dynamic Contrast. Then brightness 52, contrast 96 and we're talking.

That explains all disagreements between people.
If your HDR is dark, try that! I'm very curious if it works for others

How many people tried this and can confirm it makes a difference?

Don't wanna go through all the settings and accounts if it does nothing. I'm on EU latest firmware, 1165.1 I believe.

Apologies if already asked (this is a huge thread to look through)....

Thinking of getting the 49inch version but worried about the foot print for stand, I think width is 99.5cm but what is the depth? Any input welcome.

My eyes tell me that HDR content is brighter aswell and DC looks way off and much too bright now, only exceptions are Netflix shows like Santa Clarita.

You can try a soft reset first while holding the power button on the remote until the TV switches back on, solved the new bugs that 1165 introduced on my set for now.

But I am happy that the banding and grain are much better now on all sources (everything up to Blu Ray in general and dark scenes were horrible due to scaling issues which introduced the banding).

This is from the official forums:

Re: Ks8000 Color banding

I contacted some well respected TV-Reviewers. Several days later I received the following reply:

"Unlike Sony TVs, Samsung TVs don’t have an option to smooth 8 bit gradients. As a result, it is normal to see banding in 8 bit content. Only HDR content is 10 bit, so for other content banding can be visible."

Well, my Sony W905 still looks better in this regard, because of his gradient options, but it´s acceptable now on my KS9000 on 1165. Now I can finally watch the last 30 minutes of "Don´t Breathe" :D

I've not reset, but since the 1165 EU update I have tried putting the gamma up to 2 on HDR content an am really pleased with the result. I don't think turning the gamma up had as much of an impact before the update (though may be imagining this).

I played about with the settings more when I got Horizon Zero Dawn. And I have found what is perfect for me, not everyone will agree but give it a try and let me know.

Backlight = 20
Brightness = 43
Contrast = 90
Sharpness = 18
Dynamic contrast = High (or medium depending on game)
Gamma = -1 (or 0 depending on game)
And on warm 1

This looks fantastic and with the contrast down to 88-90 then it kills off the white getting blown out.

Try it and see

HDR content needs dynamic contrast on one of the settings or its too dark. Period.

Ive found medum or high is good even in games. I know it crushes some blacks butnit gets rid of the foggy filter look of most games

It's really annoying to change the settings back again to normal when your are not watching HDR content.

After all these updates, i don't expected anymore for this "problem" to be fixed. (it's not actually a problem, it's the software limitation i think)

I was much of the same opinion, but it's starting to grow on me having dynamic contrast off. Gamma on 2 or 3 solved my issue of it being too dim (think they fixed something on the 1165 update). There's certain things I've noticed since having dynamic contrast off which look spectacular.
