KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

My god.... Horizon Zero Dawn looks fantastic.

I'm just curious about Sharpening.

I set to 8, zero makes blurry and more than 10 adds artifacts. Which are you guys using? 8 also adds a bit of artifacts I think but... It's a very strange option

I struggle between 0-5, I honestly can't tell. I will retest once I get lasik done lol.

I 100% agree with you on SDR, but HDR is an entirely different thing.

There's no standard or mastering grade for HDR. It is literally the wild west out there. Hell- the television used to show off HDR at the Sony PS4 Pro presser was a SPECIAL ZD9 that hit 2500 nits, which their own consumer model doesn't hit.

That would be because of the power requirements. I must point out that I do not have a KS8000, I have a Vizio P Series. I would suggest adjusting your backlight. The LEDs have an affect on the ST.2048 absolute curve. Samsung sets all displays at 20, and it may not be accurate to the curve.

When you do this, initially the effect may not be desirable. That's because, the curve isn't traditional gamma. So the HDR needs to be triggered again to accept the change in luminance.

This affects highlights, color, and overall image brightness.

This is why the majority who went to the press conference are now blind lol.

I initially thought the same thing (we devoted several pages of this thread to the question), but after a ton of testing, I came to the conclusion that 0 sharpening does not artificially soften the image, and that anything above zero is adding artifacts that shouldn't be there.

So got my Switch and set it to full RGB and the TV to "normal" black levels, but seems greyish compared to "low"... is that because it scale the 16-235 into 0-255 there by giving it more pop? From what I've googled Full range RGB is normal black levels on this TV right?

I will be interested to figure out the best settings for switch as well.

Really hoping it looks ok bc I know this tv didn't do my wiiu too many favors.

Needs to be Full/Full, and Limited/Limited or 16-235/16-235 and 0-255/0-255.

Not sure I follow you. Of course artificial sharpening sucks. It causes all sorts of edge-enhancement halos, and butchers the image.

As with everything, personal preference, but I prefer a non-slaughtered image. :)

There was a bit of sarcasm in that as I knew it would grind a few people :-P

I do use it myself though, usually 10 on PS4, 20 on TV, 40 on 1080p/4k. Don't see too many artifacts, maybe it's not as obvious as mine is only 49 inch. Did want 55 inch but literally cannot fit it in due to the fireplace sticking out next to it.

What did you guys set your in game brightness to with this TV for Horizon?

Making the 2 circles barely visible seems to put me at about 0 brightness if not lower but I'm not sure if thats correct when using HDR

So, setting up my SWITCH and the backlight dims after a few seconds

I go into the menu and change it slightly and it goes back up to full brightness...then dims again...PS4 pro works fine

What's the problem?

Think I've found the key for me getting a better hdr picture with dynamic contrast off, just cranking the gamma up helps a lot.

Zelda looks like shit on my KS8000.

Hey so I've got a crazy idea. Has anyone tried setting their Wii U system settings to display 720p as opposed to relying on the system's internal upscale (BoTW is 720 native)?

My thinking is perhaps the television does a better job of handling a 720p signal than the system itself.

I'm just trying to wrap my mind around how Yakuza 5 on PS3, looks fine displaying in 720p clean and crisp despite the jaggies, yet botw looks like an up ressed blurry mess.

At work and can't try it out. Anyone else with this tv up for the test?

posibly eco settings for a different hdmi input. I had to change eco settings for all my hdmi inputs.

Why is zero dawn telling me that my TV is not HDR compatible? I have HDR+ on on my KS850
Am I missing any settings?

HDR+ is an upscaling mode for non-hdr, you want it on game mode.

Check HDMI UHD Colour in expert settings is turned on for the HDMI port your ps4 is plugged into. This is off by default as some devices don't work with it on, but this is needed for hdr.

Thanks. I clearly have not been reading the thread enough. ;)

Another question
Something that I have never noticed before and seems to be the case with or without HDR.
When it is night time in game the screen gets niticibly darker as soon as I move the camera in HZD.
What might be causing it? Because it is very jarring.

It also seems to be the case during day time but less pronounced. It feels like an aliasing problem during the daytime as it happens with fine texture detail e.g. On rocks.

Correct. 0 is not softened, just not artificially sharpened!

Switch doesn't look near as bad as I was expecting. The frame rates in zelda are more bothersome but I'll probably play handheld a lot anyways

So I got a Switch and hooked it up to HDMI 3. Randomly, throughout the past hour while on my PC (HDMI), my TV has randomly switched over to HDMI 3. I have Anynet+ disabled, and have disabled the "Match TV state" option on the Switch. Has anyone else experienced this?

So I played around with a bunch of Switch settings with Zelda and my default settings look like total shit compared to new ones.

I actually turned on Dynamic Contrast to high and it looks worlds better. Everything looked washed out until I did this. I also set the Switch to Full RGB instead of auto. Had to tone down the backlight and tweak a few other things. Ultimately both left it on Warm 2 but Warm 1 looked questionably better? Not sure on the full vs limited though?

Looks like some of the post processing the TV does are actually improving the poor IQ of the game.

Confirming, without question, that the KS8000 internal scaler is superior to the Wii U internal scaler, and you should set your Wii U system to display in 720p for Breath of the Wild specifically.

It still doesn't look great but give it a try and compare for yourself. You'll see what I mean.

Edit:

Also want to second the recommendation to slightly turn up dynamic contrast for Breath of the Wild specifically. I recommend medium. You won't be losing much detail, that's already lost by the low resolution alone.

My switch setup was to literally just make sure my settings were the same as op and brightness about 5 or 6 in the dark

I do not to need to change a thing to make it look good and certainly don't need dynamic contrast. Yall drinking some kool-aid.

This pro controller is outstanding. You forget your holding it.

Yeah I put Dynamic Contrast to Med and Color temp to standard and it looks much better for Zelda. Left the Switch to RGB Full Range.

So, new Switch owner here and one issue I've noticed is when in sleep mode, sometimes the TV (KS7000) just changes to the HDMI3 input its connected to.

HDMI-CEC is turned off on the TV and the option is disabled on the Switch as well, so no idea whats causing it.

I agree, the settings from the OP are fine. I think the combo of coming off Horizon and the lighting in zelda was throwing me off. Everything in zelda has a haze to it.

Alright just bought this tv 65 inch. Got a question do i need special cables? Im just hooking up my pro with what it came with but the guy at bestbuy mentioned 4k cables do i need these said cables?

The HDMI cable that comes with the PRO is fine. Just make sure you get at least a HDMI 2.0 cable if you ever have to replace it.

Have the 65' and wanted to see if anyone else is having the following issue. I have my PS4 Pro hooked in through HDMI on source 3, and now that I just got a Switch it is hooked in through HDMI on source 2. The problem is that now while playing my PS4 Pro (HZD) the TV will occasional randomly switch to source 2 that the Switch is hooked into. The screen will be blank and after a minute the message that no signal is found will come up. This is the first time I have had 2 systems hooked up to the TV so wanted to see if anyone else has had an issues with sources randomly switching on the TV. Thanks for any help!

It was happening to me last night as well. Hasn't happened today yet, but I've only been using my PC for about 30 mins now. Zelda looked pretty bad for me, but I'm not sure if that's cuz I'm coming from Horizon or not lol.

Just got a Fw update to 1165, anyone know what it does?

Well, hell froze over regarding to my set. I still can´t believe it, but they somehow fixed the terrible gradient banding with this firmware for me. It´s not totally gone, but reduced to an acceptable level. Some maybe remember the pics of the amazon starting screen I posted from my set. It really looks a lot better now.

I didn´t think it was even possible to fix this via a firmwae update but somehow they did. A week ago I ranted in the official forum in the "banding thread", but can´t reply there because I lost a lot of my passwords due to a harddrive crash. :/

Picture looks a little crisper overall on all sources which even my dad noticed without me saying anything.

But this wouldn´t be a true Samsung firmware without introducing new annoying bugs.
For me the smarthub is acting like crazy now with missing tiles and errors when I simply want to watch TV or switch to other sources. When I click the amazon web, sometimes Netflix or another app starts instead.

A user here said a factory reset helped him with HDR, I didn´t want to lose my settings, so I did a kind of "soft reset" first by holding the power button for 20 seconds until the TV switches back on by itself. This helped me for now, but I don´t think for long...and not sure what happens when the next firmware comes and maybe introduces the banding again. ;)
There is not only panel lottery but also firmware lottery for some Samsung users.

Does anyone use the ks8000 and an AVR with Instant On on xbox and ARC on the receiver?

When I have RIHD on my receiver for ARC and have the xbox turn on tv and avr at same time the TV screem has a bunch of green lines until the xbox hdmi kicks in.

If i turn RIHD off it doesnt do it

Yeah, also happening to me on the KS9000. Pretty annoying. Maybe the Switch is right though, maybe it knows best... maybe I should turn you back on and keep playing you. Hmm... yes.

If anyone missed the dedicated thread on it, it appears the only fix for the switch port-switching issue is to simply turn it off instead of leaving it in sleep mode. :\

Im just wondering if anyone has any better knowledge on the gamma setting.

Always left it at 0 from the little research i did but wondered if anyone had a different opinion.

Re: Dynamic Contrast - I've found upping the Gamma all the way to 3 for HDR content fixes the picture without necessitating DC. Moreover, I've found it enhances the look of HDR content (RE4, Gears 4) that previously looked fine without Dynamic Contrast. It fixed Santa Clarita Diet and The OA, both of which looked lousy without DC.

Will experiment with Horizon on Monday, but so far I think this is the best fix for dull looking HDR pictures.
