KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Looks like there is an update on the forums for the Game mode HDR issue.

Might not be fixed (to anyone's surprise)

Re: KS8000 Game Mode doesn't save settings for HDR/SDR
Hey guys, we finally got an update from our specialists. Game mode will usually bypass the DNIe chip in the TV and many picture options will be limited while using Game mode. So in essence, yes this particular issue is considered normal or a "feature" However, we are still looking into other issues with Game mode that I am sure you guys have seen across the boards and we will update those posts too as soon as we get further information.

Re: KS8000 Game Mode doesn't save settings for HDR/SDR

Calling this a "feature" is absurd. I understand that most post-processing effects from the "DNIe chip" like Auto Motion Plus are disabled in Game Mode. However, what we're talking about is nothing like a CPU intensive post-processing effect. We just want the TV to automatically recall a user's Backlight setting, at the bare minimum.

It's as simple as switching the Backlight to 20 when viewing HDR content and back to 10 when viewing regular content. Otherwise the user is just forced to do it manually. I don't understand why this would have to be inextricably tied to the DNIe chip that handles all the hardcore post-processing effects.

I'm going to be very disappointed if this issue is just being written off. But thank you for getting back to us, Cole. I appreciate it.

Not at all, I can't say for sure if it will be changed or when it would be changed as we can't speculate on future updates. But I can say the people who handle updates are now aware of the issue. You are right though, it is something that could potentially be addressed in a future update.

As far as the other issues that have been escalated they are outlined on the boards but I will link a few of them below: (Only related to Game Mode)

https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/TVs/Game-mode-UN65KS8000-HDR/m-p/41370#U41370 -> This one is similar to this one but has not yet been given the update

https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/TVs/KS8000-Random-red-blue-color-separation-in-Game-Mode/m-p/521...

In most cases we get drowned out so it's easy to miss our post stating we're escalating it or we forget to let all threads regarding a single issue know, but we actively watch the boards and all issues posted here are reviewed by our specialists/engineers/developers.

Well, if it never gets addressed I'll be disappointed but not really mad about it. I'm usually having to switch the TV in and out of Game Mode anyway so it's not like I don't already have the remote nearby in most cases. I wouldn't want to return my set or pay twice as much for OLED over it, personally.

In Cole's second response he mentions there's still a possibility for an update and at least the specialists are now aware of the issue. He's basically a customer service rep who's probably in the dark just as much as we are. Also, it's nice to know they are aware of the color separation issue as well. Still holding out hope.

However, if the "DNIe chip" explanation came from their specialists, it's a little disheartening to hear they want to hand-wave the issue off as a "feature" that's tied directly to the chip being bypassed in Game Mode like it's some kind of impossible task to automatically adjust the backlight for HDR/regular content. It's absurd.

My only hope is that he or they are unclear on what's being asked. He goes on to say this...

I replied in the thread in an attempt to clarify.

Does anyone know how to get 5.1 via PC on this thing? My PC only recognizes 2.0 when I try to set it up. Seems it has something to do with the EDID on the TV telling my 1080 it only supports 2 channels? Any way around this?

Had the colour separation issue in Wildlands earlier on my standard XBox One. I've not seen that happen for a quite a while both on Xbox and PS4.

EDIT

Happened again 24 hours later.

I'm happy to see that a mod has responded to this request and hopefully Samsung follows through with an update to finally deliver what we KS owners have wanted for a long time.

Thanks for posting on those threads and bringing attention to the issue Heel.

So, I just learned that holding the back button while in an app will restart the app. Really helps with all of Hulu's issues, especially considering it's significantly faster than restarting the whole TV by holding the power button down like I was doing before.

I got a random top of screen to bottom of screen issue out of the blue, where a single column (1 pixel wide) of lit pixels have changed to magenta and stayed lit despite unplugging all cables and turning on and off the TV.

This issue shows up whether my receiver is on or on or off, meaning that it doesn't matter what input I'm on; the lit pixel column persists.

I was on 1155 FW, but while the column was on screen I figured I might as well update to 1167 and see if that resolves it to no avail...

I have not unplugged the TV from the wall yet, but I'll try that and test it tomorrow to see it somehow corrects it.

Any other suggestions fellow KS8000 owners?

I can say that I've only hand a few times with simply fixable handshake input issues, but no pixel lit issues...

The issue actually materialized while watching a movie that was displaying correctly during the first half and suddenly just happened...

I have it under warranty, but I'm concerned that it may not be replaceable since it's now an older TV, but that remains to be seen.

Not sure about your problem but if it's under warranty you can just get Samsung to fix it. I had a half-inch of light visible behind the bezel at the corner of my TV and they sent out a technician out to make a determination, then came out again and replaced the whole panel (basically everything but the plastic backing and the circuitry). Like getting a new TV.

Don't know if it's been posted yet, but when using Netflix, pressing the 123 button and then pressing the I for info will give you the relevant info that showcases the resolution anything you're viewing is being streamed at, along with audio and mbps.

I'm having a really hard time getting the tv to play ball with my PC. I'm still trying to figure out the bets settings, but the thing that keeps me stumped is the way that I'm locked out of some settings at random.

For example, whether I can select game mode or not seems to depend on the resolution and/or whether it is running in fullscreen or not. Running one game locks me out of some picture settings, and running another game unlocks some but locks me out of others. What gives?

Also, what are the best settings in the Nivida Control Panel? I'm using a GTX 1060 and I'm not sure what color space I should be using. I want to play Hitman and Resident Evil 7 in HDR, but haven't had any success yet...

I had this issue and found no solution. I run optical out from my TV to my 5.1 sound bar and all I get from my PC (also a 1080) is Stereo. :(

Everything else I can get DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1 via optical from my TV (Cable Box, PS4, XB1)

Are you sure you turned off all of the eco settings for that particular mode? It saves a separate set of settings for everything, including the apps, so check it while using Netflix.

If not, no idea.

I set my PC to output 4:2:2 so I can use game mode. Otherwise I am stuck in PC mode which forces you to use native color space instead of auto which over saturates the fuck out of colors. If you are outputting 4:4:4 your TV will automatically be in PC mode.

Color space should be auto if you want the most accurate colors.

I need to get some new HDMI cables. PS4 pro started to color band out of nowhere for about a second (happens once a weekish) and cable for my cable TV craps out and snows out every so often lol.

By default optical audio doesn't have enough bandwidth to send more than 2.0 audio. You will need to have software on the pc encode the audio to 5.1. Since I have a sound blaster card I had to enable dolby digital live to get 5.1 audio via optical.

I was telling my brother about this TV like a month or 2 ago after his piece of shit Sony one died after 13 months. He just told me today that he ordered the 8500. I can't wait to check this thing out.

I've started to notice that anything running HDR on the 8000 looks oddly dim. Horizon Zero Dawn as an example. When you speak to somebody at night you see the panel almost dim as it focuses on the main character.

Read up a bit and saw somebody mention there is some sort of dimming effect you can't disable in HDR? A few people on the Samsung forums seemingly get round it with dynamic contrast on medium solely for HDR.

Anyone else seeing this? It's not the end of the world - just looks like there is a layer of dimness over the top.

Check that the eco settings/sensors are all turned off on every input. I think they are designed to dim the screen in dark scenes etc...

Tried all the eco stuff. Is all off. Might do a reset or something.

Interestingly dynamic contrast on low really does give that little boost it looks like it needs. I'm going back and forward and can't see low overly washing out or crushing dark.

Edit : actually in bright snow areas it does over do it even on low. Ugh. I'll just stick with the dimming I guess!

According to rtings the new Q7 TVs are worse than the KS8000 series especially in the brightness and HDR sections which represent the biggest selling factors: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q7f

Just crazy. Dunno if the Q8 and Q9 will improve over the Q7.
I knew the whole QLED thing was a load of shit. I predicted that the new Samsung line would not hold up after the KS8000/9000 line until they implement OLED.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

Is QLED not just a rebranding of Quantum Dot LED, that conveniently looks a little like OLED.

Going from Zelda to horizon is almost jarring. Horizon almost looks "too dark" since the blacks in Zelda are closer to grey compared to the hdr in horizon.

Are you guys still getting the PS4 Pro black screen w/audio dropping issue? I was hoping this would be taken care of with some update either on the PS4 or the KS800 but it's still happening at random. I can go for 12 hours straight without an issue but have it happen a couple of times within a 2 hour gaming session.

I know there's a fix but I think it entails dropping down to a lesser video format.

use YUV420 mode on the ps4 under resolution

Q7 review seems bizarre. "Out of spec", huh.

It turns out Samsung confirmed their findings.

Update 03/17/2017: We invited Samsung's engineers to our lab in Montreal. They confirmed the validity of our measurements of peak brightness on our two units using their equipment. They commented that peak brightness measurements are lower than specification, the Q7 should reach 1000 nits while viewing HDR in Movie mode. They are investigating the issue.

Still happening. It's really unacceptable, and since it doesn't happen with Xbox One HDR or anything else and it does happen on other TVs, I'm blaming Sony and steering clear in the future.

I've tried three different certified cables.

Ah I see, I've never come across a Tv that will pass 5.1 out of the TV via optical. Presumably in order to adhere to the HDMI copy protection standards.

To pass it through to my sound system

Just to confirm, does this TV pass through 5.1 from HDMI to optical out?

I was also under the impression that this was quite rare.
Yeah but only via bitstream. I also tried hdmi but that didn't work

If the Switch is like the Wii U which I'm pretty sure it is then it won't work via optical. It only outputs via PCM 5.1 which optical does not have the bandwidth to carry. You'll need to use HDMI
