Kung Fu Live announced (side-scrolling brawler for PSeye)

A preview of E3? :P :lol

It looks like one of those old 16-bit fighting games that used photographs as sprites...which may be a good or bad thing depending on your taste.

Stick of joy seems to think the tech is good, although they wonder about the game and the physicality, and whether it'll get tiring etc.

t's clear that the technology powering Kung-Fu Live is far more powerful than what we've seen in the PS2 generation. The system is able to accurately remove the background in real-time -- and is intelligent enough to know when new players jump in or out. Another aspect that benefits Kung-Fu Live: personality. The game is story-driven, told through comic panels in which you can feature. At the start of each level the game will suggest a pose for you to attempt, after which the camera will take a picture and inject you into a comic book scene. Seeing myself roundhouse kick three goons in a generated comic book strip was definitely amusing. (Being able to share these photos online seems like an ideal way to use the game's built-in Facebook functionality, as well.)

There's no problem with the responsiveness. The game registered every kick and every punch I threw at the virtual bad guys, and I really enjoyed using the various powers.

...

However, this doesn't negate the fact that I'm staring at the TV and punching and kicking the air. Because of the 2D orientation of the game, you'll be facing forward, but moving side to side, which is simply not as intuitive as facing the screen and moving in the same direction.

Video is at the link. I have to say, the player extraction does look good, and it's novel. You're in the game, but not in a eyetoy 'the whole background is a video feed' way, it just parses out 'you'.

Anyway, I suppose it can't be worse than some of the PSeye stuff that's been released to date...

Well we thought we knew everything last year. Then bam-
there it is, er i mean
Final Fantasy XIV Online.

There'll always be one surprise.

This isn't Sony's stuff though.

It's a small indie developer as far as I can tell, I certainly don't blame them for coming out pre-E3 with it.

I don't know where, but I had seen that video a while ago. I didn't know it was for PSEye though, I thought it was for PC webcams.

I looks pretty fun and I like the how the game doesn't take itself seriously at all. I could give it a try if the price is right.

The neccessity to kick and punch sideways (if you don't want to get a stiff neck) kills any potential fun for me. If you could do actual kicking and punching the idea might be ok.

Oh and trailer looks hilariously bad.

If the tech is this good, how about a version where you create a character by recording walking, punching, and kicking animations, and then play it with a controller?

Go check Photo Dojo for DSi. It's free.

Looking at the camera sideways seems like it'd be weird. I wonder if it would still work okay if you put the camera to the side. You could face the tv and see whats going on without turning your head, but the camera could still get the sideview of your moves.

Yeah I saw this old video. They're using the old eye-toy from PS2 on the pc demo.
Surprised that there wasn't any PC version - maybe self-publisher on PSN easier or only work some webcams as I've heard PSeye and eyetoy are not all the same as standard PC webcam.

Nickelodeon did this twenty years ago, and it didn't look like a bit of fun back then either. they should make a meteorologist simulator with this tech

This.

Best new IP of the year right here ladies and gents!
Absolutely. Looks like one of those mid-90s FMV sprite based side scrollers.

Case in point - Shin Shinobi Den!

Ha...dark10x nailed the visual comparison. First thing I thought of. Not sold on the side-view input as it means you're practically looking to one side while facing the other. Just a bit too awkward-seeming. Should be fun for a demo, though.

Haha, seems kind of fitting in a bad martial-arts movie sort of way with everyone looking at the camera.

Anyway, this seems like lawsuit-waiiting-to-happen the game.

Finally, a game that lets me damage enemies by slapping them around with my dick.

No DSi, but I'm curious now.

Edit: Honestly, I think this (Kung Fu Live) could be pretty hilarious as a casual party game. I'd definitely try it given the opportunity.
