Late to the party... Slim PS2

Yeah i know, i know...


I have had almost every console since the 1st atari came out years ago except the PS2.
no idea how or why it happened like that but better late then never. (maybe cuz i hate the feel of the dual shock as well as triangle sqaure) The ps1 killed that for me.

well tonight that changed and i am the new owner of a slim PS2.

A client walked in and had no cash but had a slim line PS2 in trade for her tattoo so i jumped on it.

I am curious now, What next?
what are the differences in the Slim PS2 and regular size?

What size memory card would be best for saves on PS2 games?

what games are must rents and must buys.

i have 4 games in mind to buy or rent right away.

God of War (buy or rent?)
Shadow of the Colossus (buy or rent)
Kingdom Hearts I & II (buy or rent?)
is ico worth my time?


what else is a must have or at least a must try?
i've already got all the GTA games so don't go there.


Help me not buy the wrong shit.

Buy ICO, rent Shadow. Not that Shadow is bad, but you can actually beat it in a rental. Unless you collect games...

I recommend Dark Cloud 2, Devil May Cry 3, Katamari Damacy, and I'm enjoying Dragon Quest 8 also.

Ratchet: Deadlocked is a fun rental.

8 MB memory card is enough for me, but then again I trade in EVERYTHING.
 
strange: I'd recommend that you get the two-pack of red and blue memory cards. You save a few bucks on buying them together, plus it's always there as a backup. Otherwise, the only thing I can really recommend is get the slimtool and swapmagic.

Why, you ask?

Imports.

Earth Defense Force 2 is an essential PS2 game, and you should import it ASAP. :D

Stop recommending the guitar game to everyone. Do you realize how few people in the US play rhythm games with their controllers? Now make them use a guitar, and become skilled at it! I realize the guitar is probably the coolest instrument to play, but these are video games. Ask him if he'd like the idea of playing a guitar first.

anyway, Demi. i have a DS and 9 games for it.

so Shadow is maybe a rental or used purchase?
look for a double pack (red and blue memory)
the swap magic disk sounds amazingly to good to be true. but will bookmark for later use maybe.

oh and what compares to Mario for the PS2 (i have an 8 year old who LOVES Mario more then any other charecter).

i do play Bass Guitar but never been much into those types of games, well Donkey Kong jungle beat was fun.
 
Strange: I have a fliptop + swapmagic on my old-style PS2 and it works fine. :D

Yeah. 1+2 are pretty fun platformers with some gunplay (albeit a fun gunplay)...

Sly series is pretty good too, but AVOID JAK.

Tak is a solid series...
 
Sony publishes the Ratchet, Jak, and Sly games.

Think of Ratchet as a gadget-based shooter.
Jak as a shooting/vehicle-based platformer, though the first one is more just platforming.
Sly I've never played, but I read it's very fun and more like a platformer.

Try Klonoa 2. I really liked that one.

Buy them all, they're worth it. Just skip ICO, that game sux. You'll grow a hate towards white chicks and black creatures and you don't want that now do you?

Other games you need are Devil May Cry 3, a Ratchet and Clank game, and maybe throw in some Final Fantasy and a Nippon Icho game.

i hear devil may cry is a good series, but which one is the one that will get me addicted to it forever?

sly sounds like something for my son, i assume kingdom hearts will be another for him as well.

with a cube, 360, xbox, N64, DS,PS1, Gameboy, and PS2 i think it might be time to hit up gamefly.net finally. lol
 
The Jak games are some of the best games I have ever played.
However, (And this is VERY important) only Jak 1 is suitable for children. The rest get mature, sexually and violently. Jak 2 is also really difficult.

DMC3, its the one with a complete combo system (close to fighting game levels) so that one would be the one to go with.

everyone says this! I'm starting to think it's a fluke I breezed through Jak II with absolutely no difficulty issues whatsoever :|

Also, ICO owns, SotC owns, f the haters.

All of the series is worth it, but I thought you just wanted the best out of all of them. If you wait until MGS3:S you'll get MGS3, Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake all in 1 package.
 
About Metal Gear, since I didn't notice it--Get Metal Gear Solid 2. It's cheap nowadays, and if you weren't enthralled with the GC version, MGS2 will help you to further know where the series is. Get it to make sure if you'd like to go further or not.

As for MGS3, I'd wait for MGS3:S, as it corrects a rather poor camera.
 
Strange: There are tons of exclusives. But you asked with smaller criteria.

Widening it out, get...

1. Dark Cloud 2 - Seriously! It is one of the best RPGs this gen. Over 100 hours of gameplay, great visuals, harmless storyline, ActRaiser-esque town building and brilliant invention system. And if you don't mind LOTS of dungeon romping to collect items/destroy beasties (random dungeons, no less!), then it'll be your love. It is so, so good.

2. Frequency/Amplitude - Find either one, love yourself.

3. Katamari/<3 Katamari - Find either one, love yourself.

4. Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant - A non-traditional RPG that rocks the hizzouse. Characters can be a bit silly, but so awesome.

5. Sly Cooper 1 - 19.99, great game. Also has really nice level commentary after you beat every level for 100%, awesome feature.

I can list a billion more of course, but... you know...there's a lot.

If you're recommending that one, why not the original?
 
If you're at all into RPGs, buy Final Fantasy X, which can be found for $20.

Solid battle system, interesting (subjective) story, amazing music and one of the best video game endings ever.

After that, pick up ICO, which if you can find, will probabaly be for $20.

Interesting puzzles, well done atmosphere and just a beautiful game.

...and then after that, pick up Metal Gear Solid 3: S. Which will probabaly be $40.

This game is Metal Gear Solid. Refined. Some of the best gaming you'll experience.

With that, you will have experienced the best PS2 has to offer, then you can enjoy the biggest libary of games on any console.

oh i have never been a huge fan of turn based RPG's they are hard for me to get into.
that and sportsgames for some reason just don't do it for me.

as far as single player games go i prefer good stories with great to ok gameplay.

what about the Resident evil outbreak games?
 
Avoid the Outbreak games. Get the real deal instead, RE4 (unless you have played it already). Buy MGS3, God of War and Shadow of The Colossus. MGS3 was voted game of the year last year at this forum and Shadow of The Colossus was #2 this year and GoW #4 (3 if you count consoles). GET THEM! :D

IF you're smart though you'll wait for MGS3: Subsistence. I think it's coming out in March.

Edit: Fuck it! All I want is for you to buy GOD OF WAR! I promise you you'll love it. Plus you gotta support a Gaffer, our own davidjaffe.
 
ok, off to get God of war and see what insane sales toys are us is having.

so the outbreak series is not worth my time,

ahh i can finally get silent hill 3. is it better or worse then 4? 2 was enjoyable.

any other horror games not on other systems worth getting ( i played RE4 on cube 3 times through)

what about 1st person games?
 
Better than 4, better than 2, don't bother with 4, 4 sucks

First person games? Most of which is on Xbox (ie superior)
 
I bought a PS2 on launch and recently bought a slimline PS2 because, uh, I wanted one....for...college. Yes.

Games I've enjoyed:

God of War
Guitar Hero
Final Fantasy X (and X-2, to be honest with you, but I didn't get "FF" pleasure from it)
ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Devil May Cry 1 and 3, but 3 I didn't get far. It's very difficult. Fun while it lasted.
DQ8
MGS3
Jak 1 or 3, 2 is good but eh.
 
Good. God of War must be experienced by all PS2 owners :D

Silent Hill 3 is very good. Not as memorable as 2 but still very good. If you liked the cult scenario in RE4 you'll appreciate SH3 even more. I say GET :) Plus it's very creepy. Lot's of cool effects in the game.

DMC series - 1 was great, heard 3 is good too
God of War - another one of my favorite game of all time...
Katamari - fun little game
Ace Combat 4/5 - another great series...fun arcade style flight sim with great storyline
Fighting games: Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, VF4 Evo - all great
RPGs: I'm no expert on this but there are a shit load of them on ps2

Get DMC1, it's great and it nicely prepares you for DMC3, cause quite frankly DMC1 is nice and challenging, DMC3 would just tear you a new one right away. DMC2 is actually a decent game in it's own right, pretty easy game, but being after the great DMC1, it didn't compare.

Aw thanks, you too.

I forgot about the Silent Hills. 2 was awesome, I never played 3, and 4 I got on Xbox. I liked the room motif even if the execution was flawed.

I never cared for Ratchet. I like Katamari. I have the first ZOE but never the second, even though people rave about it.

I guess he could get the first too, as the story is directly connected. I just mentioned sequel 'cause it's more refined and you really don't need the first to understand everything (although it helps).

But yeah, if he can find the first that's a decent game too.

OK, back and snagged 2 games to get me started and a memory chip, i am bummed cuz Gamestop had buy 3 used get one free but it Ended yesterday.

there was some horror game i almost grabbed used that seemed like a cross between silent hill and fatal frame but i can not recall the title.

was dark cover with lots of grainy reds.

What about the Tomb Raider series. i saw a used one there of the darker one that was done last i think and it looked so-so. ?


Toys R Us had Giest and Transformers on sale for 9 dollars so i grabbed both of those. i Almost picked up phychonuts for the win but after seeing the memory card was going to run me close to 30 bucks i had to pass on it for today.

As for as camera work is concerned it has some of the best though, but yeah I would love to check out the lovely game more with a controllable camera.
 
well, i played through the 1st level and what do ya know Animated boobies.

guess that M is there for more then just blood and gore. lol
