Leak: Ubisoft presentation on representation (cites Anita Sarkeesian's content agenda)

If any of you men feel this way (the bolded) you need to check yourself. It's probably you! Don't blame women for that. It's just you guys being weidos. And why would a teacher need to close the door to talk to one of his pupils?
It is not me I do not live in America. It is others because these days a women can accuse a men out of nowhere and he would be done for. Even for jokes like Tim Hunt as famous example.

In Silicon Valley, some male investors have declined one-on-one meetings with women, or rescheduled them from restaurants to conference rooms. On Wall Street, certain senior men have tried to avoid closed-door meetings with junior women. And in TV news, some male executives have scrupulously minded their words in conversations with female talent.

In interviews, the men describe a heightened caution because of recent sexual harassment cases, and they worry that one accusation, or misunderstood comment, could end their careers. But their actions affect women's careers, too — potentially depriving them of the kind of relationships that lead to promotions or investments.

And for the teacher part is is a rule to prevent sexual assault since men are stigmatized as sexual predators so pedophilia is in this whole package. There are airlines that do not let men sit near a child who flies alone as well.

And yet you seem eager to rectify the situation.
Gets one thinking.

It also gets one to write an impenetrable nitpicky wall of text apparently.

The default position is that in contemporary free market western societies, which is where these studios are located, the market is working. Companies are hiring, people are looking for jobs. Unless you can show otherwise, the default position is the 74% mark has been reached on an entirely voluntary basis, which is how it should be anyway. I can hardly wait for your evidence that it's not the case.

In a free market society, companies are free to do as they please with their internal policies (if they don't break any laws obviously). Can you guess where I'm going with this?

What a silly remark. These policies have consequences in the content they put out, which is the crux of the matter.

Do tell me, what's the consequence THIS policy has on you? Not these, this one specifically.

Which they are entitled to. They have every right to set internal policies to promote whichever values they choose. I, in turn, have every right to call them out.

True. And I have every right to disagree with you and agree with them. Circular reasoning makes me dizzy.

Who said they are antagonizing me, that their core motivation is pissing a certain demographic off? They have every right to conduct business the way they see fit and I have every right to decide which games to buy. I also have every right to express my opinions on their policies, which is what I'm doing here. Yet all of this seems to escape you. Why would that be?

Again, I have every right to disagree with you and that's what we're doing here. We're debating.

You made the implication. It's the logic corolary. You spoke of not enough female characters as a symptom and said it'd be better to address the root cause, lack of female devs. If so, having more female devs would necessarily lead to more female characters, because, they - female devs - would necessarily write more female characters. Do I really have to spell it out?

I think I expressed myself poorly. What I think should be the goal in the industry isn't to simply have more female characters (though that couldn't hurt), but having consistently better written ones. I think that having more women writing them could help that out. Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds intuitive to entertain that possibility.

I am not asserting that men and women can write interchangeably. But this is an example of the real life consequences of adopting the policies you propose: Diversity is a good thing per se, Diversity in cast is a good thing per se, to write a diverse cast you necessarily must have diverse writers. This is the rationale ready and willing to justify hiring people not for their competence but over arbitrary characteristics such as gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Too bad you cannot see that.

I don't really think this is what this policy is about, I see it more like making women more comfortable in the industry. There are a lot of evidences about it being a shit field to work in.

Intersectionality is an Orwelian world view.

So is prolefeed. Like the black woman in HR or the trans chick in Andromeda.

Says the individual who wouldn't resist inserting the usual vacuous Jordan Peterson reference.

It's not vacuous, your argument about women being statistically less inclined to work in the industry than men is ipsis litteris what Peterson talks about quite a lot.

Your standards on what constitutes a rational case are piss poor then. But that has been established already by a long history of posts .

You know there's a way to defend what you're defending without sounding like a raging incel. You're doing it wrong though.

You are totally wrong on both those. Men can be accused and fired based just on those accusations. No real evidence is needed. If I worked with women I would be following the Pence rules, never alone with a woman period. It is just too easy for a woman's lie to ruin a man in today's culture.

As for the teacher closing the door to talk to a pupil, I would guess to respect the privacy of the pupil. I don't think it would be good to have people walking by know that Jimmy or Jane were failing, or hear them talking about the abuse they are experiencing at home.

Also this only goes for male teachers female teachers can close the door with no problems.

The sad part about all of this is.....wanting to not fall prey to boring tropes should be something that we all at least appreciate a company researching and thinking about it. But if that...yes....even just doing that turns into a huge culture war were you personally view it as "neoliberal" ambitions and reconciling with the so-called "Left".

A company can't even do this in private without looking like villains to 50% of gamers. This whole thing freaking sucks. Guys like me want to honestly play games with people that look like me, sound like me, and I can relate to them. I haven't gotten as much as I'd like but things have gotten better over the last decade. Then I started to realize that after playing games as a lesbian (Gone Home) and as a young girl (The Walking Dead and Life is Strange) what I REALLY wanted was to play games that told different stories than the 3,000 that I played as a straight/white/male. And the response that many on GAF and other places is "SCREW THIS SJW BULLCRAP" and it's just so frustrating that the world has to be like this.
What is with this "woe is me" nonsense. You got to play as a lesbian, you got to play as young girl. No one took anything away from you, so what exactly are you crying about? That other people aren't as excited about that as you are.

People are always going to have opinions.

Those sound like paranoid men. Grab your balls and stop being scared to death because other dudes couldn't handle themselves around women.

You'd also be considered a small-minded paranoid man too then. You are assuming that a bunch of men are losing their jobs to women that are just lying nationally. Why don't you give criminals in jail this same benefit of the doubt that you give to the average guy that's fired due to a sexual assault case?

Also this only goes for male teachers female teachers can close the door with no problems.

What school is this? "IF" this is true then that's a stupid rule. It has to go both ways. But are you being honest? Or are you telling partial truths?

I was going to buy the game and DLC anyway, just like I did with Origins. Now I'm just telling Ubisoft that they're doing a great job and should keep it up by increasing their preorder numbers.

You should probably also have a look at how many anti-SJW threads there were on this game in the last few weeks. It seems all Gaf can talk about is SJWs and the alleged SJW apocalypse. Meanwhile, I haven't run across an actual SJW in months, on forums or in social media. Just anti-SJWs whining and gnashing their teeth. But hey, anti-SJWs aren't obsessed.
I wonder whatever happened to that GamerGate thing where they said "can't we just play games?"

ya 'rly

Putting aside your hyperbolic nonsense about "anti-sjw are everywhere" which is just laughable, considering all i have to do to see you wrong is click on the back button, that doesn't change my critique. You spend extra money on a game to piss off people on the internet who don't know you exist. You act like your above it all, but you are clearly either invested in the "fight", or very easy to manipulate.

As a final consumer just really care about getting a good product not who made it , the same way I buy a new car or a box of corn flakes......if UBI is doing this hope works to delivier better games , specially on the Far Cry franchise since its been going down since FC3. Every company is free to develop its work culture unless it breaks the law.

Why should I lie? I am not frm the progressive left or feminist that needs to lie
Example:

Speaking of which, our relationships with girls is also a point of contention. People still have a perception about male teachers who may be somehow tempted by our female students. I do have to make sure that, when I speak to my girls, it's in an open-door setting or amongst a larger group of students. I get that there's a long history of issues stemming from before I was born. Sometimes, however, it feels like the burden of proof leans harder on male teachers in those situations than female teachers.

And no these man are not paranoid they just do not want to end their career.

This is and has been common wisdom going on multiple years.
A "common wisdom" you say? I'd expect there to be some research to back it up, but the words you have used described it rather well.

Basically an opinion, disagreeing with which can lead you being labeled all sorts of things, from nazi, to, nowadays popular, incel.

The "I'm perfect, there is no valid criticism of me, whoever does, is <insert label>" is rather troubling approach to discourse. Heck, let alone literal dehumanization of opponents, they aren't even human beings, they are "human garbage".

Most of what I see is just sex negative projection onto gaming, with nonstop cherry picking (#batmansarse anyone?), and even plagiarism, as, oh my goodness, the expert doesn't even play games for fun, ouch.

Last, but not least, I believe it's good to have diverse games, with various protagonist and all, and in most of them, when story allows, having fully customizable protagonist (including gender slider, why, the hell, not), what I'm cool with is having people who give no fucks about games effectively censoring them to push agendas.

Merely my opinion, but the types we talk about, hate you too, despite your black skin, it's just that they hate you a bit less than those with white (as those with white is simply the larger group).

Oh so this is just a guy's perception. I mean he's okay to have that feeling and opinion, but it doesn't mean it was a school rule.

Luckily for me I don't like women who say "why can't we hate men". They are narrow-minded idiots that are mad at their lot in life and spew out equal or more hate than the people they dislike in the first place.

When these characters exist in games, people find reasons to whine. OP here recently cried crocodile tears because Tomb Raider has a character that is brown. Most of the characters in the reboot trilogy are poorly written, but apparently because this particular one is brown, it's forced diversity.

I do actually give accused criminals the same benefit of the doubt. Innocent until proven guilty. As I mentioned, men have been fired just based on accusations, with no evidence. If evidence is presented to prove sexual harassment happened, sure fire the guy. A guy isn't going to jail because his neighbor accused him of selling drugs, there has to be evidence.

If paragraphs are present, which they are, it can't possibly qualify as a wall, certainly not impenetrable, though that judgement has more to do with the reader than what's being read.

That's not what circular reasoning entails. But, yes, you do have every right to side up with Ubisoft, on this or any other matter. Not providing good reasons or providing the shoddiest reasons for doing so strengthens my case.

I think I expressed myself poorly. I am not disputing you in this regard.

I don't really think this is what this policy is about, I see it more like making women more comfortable in the industry. There are a lot of evidences about it being a shit field to work in.

The BBC, for example, has been revealed to have a policy of explicitly not hiring white males for certain positions, all in the name of holly diversity. That necessarily means that if a Caucasian man were to be the most qualified person for the job, he would nonetheless be excluded under the aforementioned policies. Imagine that, if you will, applied to videogames.

It's not vacuous, your argument about women being statistically less inclined to work in the industry than men is ipsis litteris what Peterson talks about quite a lot.

It's debatable whether my argument coincides with his or not. What's more important, though, is that it doesn't matter. Being ipsis verbis Peterson's argument has no bearing on whether it is a valid one or not. It takes a certain mindset to even think that it has.

You know there's a way to defend what you're defending without sounding like a raging incel. You're doing it wrong though

This is where I draw the line.
If I were surprised, I'd say this kind of personal attack reflects poorly on you. So this pearl of a remark of yours stays here, for everyone to read and see for themselves the level to which you have decided to stoop.

Oh no people complained in a steam forum. What a tragedy

Again, the game still exists last I checked, and from what I saw it recieved nothing but glowing praise from the media, which has a far greater reach than a steam forum most people have never gone to.

You're not entitled to everyone praising the games you like. People can, and will criticize things, sometimes for silly reasons.

I've read hundreds of articles attacking games for being to "toxic"/"violent"/"sexist" whatever so good luck getting me to cry tears over Gone Home or The Walking Dead

people freaked out because it handled as GOTY when it came out and the only REASON for this was the characters is gay "twist". These people giving it 9 and 10 even defendedthe high price for 90 minutes. Something they even critize for 15 hour 60$ games.... The backlash was never against the game but because of what it was made by these people (not the developer)

Oh so this is just a guy's perception. I mean he's okay to have that feeling and opinion, but it doesn't mean it was a school rule.
I googled 30 seconds for this If I would put more effort into it I would get what you want but then you would probably question the source or the reasoning like you do in the New York Times article I just posted

For any man this has happened to, of course, it's BS and terrible. And that guy or guys should get lawyers and sue the heck out of these companies. But lets not act like men haven't been sexually harassing women in the work place for decades.

Except it was a very good game and deserved the praise it got. It's okay that you didn't like it. The $15 I paid for it was well worth it.

No it was not. You want a good gmae like this? Try something like Nancy Drew. Or Grim Tales. These are the same kind of games but much much better and smarter. Than anything in Gone Home. It is like people like Abby from GB tries to argue how Dream daddy is a good visual novel which does something new. No it does not you just do not have ANY clue about this genre.

It's been repeated countless times, but for some obscure reason it doesn't seem to register with you. Indeed, companies are free to set internal policies and I am free to comment on them. Is that, at long last, finally clear?

And I am free to applaud their decision and you're free to disagree with me and I'm free to stick to what I said in the first place. It feels like you think that writing a summary of what's happening here is somehow an argument.

That's not what circular reasoning entails. But, yes, you do have every right to side up with Ubisoft, on this or any other matter, but not providing good reasons or providing the shoddiest reasons for doing so strengthens my case.

I feel like I provided good reasons. I want stronger creative works and I believe that a more heterogeneous crowd of creators could provide that.

The BBC, for example, has been revealed to have policy of explicitly not hiring white males, in the name of holly diversity. That necessarily means if a Caucasian man were to be the most qualified person for the job, he would be excluded under the aforementioned policies. Imagine that, if you will, applied to videogames.

The Ubisoft policy is not like the BBC one. I don't know the BBC one, but if it's like you say it is then it's not something I agree with either. I don't want men to lose their jobs, I want women to be comfortable doing theirs.

It's debatable whether my argument coincides with his or not. What's more important, though, is that it doesn't matter that it is his argument ipsis verbis. Being Peterson's argument has no bearing onw whether it is a valid one or not. It takes a certain mindset to think that it has.

I mentioned it because I don't think it applies to the video game industry because it's a relatively young field, so any statistical thinking one can provide is hampered by the small sample size.

This is where I draw the line.
If I were surprised, I'd say this kind of personal attack reflects poorly on you. So this pearl of a remark of yours stays here, for everyone to read and see for themselves the level to which you have decided to stoop.

Poor you, all you did was question my ability to provide a rational case based on my history of posts. So you can imply I'm stupid, but when I say that you might have sexist reasons for arguing against an internal policy that by all accounts you shouldn't even be aware of and one that has absolutely no effects on your life then it's an outrage? Being disingenuous only works if it's not so on the nose.

For any man this has happened to, of course, it's BS and terrible. And that guy or guys should get lawyers and sue the heck out of these companies. But lets not act like men haven't been sexually harassing women in the work place for decades.

They can't sue. Usually because there is no evidence either way. Since all the woman has to say is that it happened when they were alone. When someone sues over these types of things they have to prove they didn't do the thing that got them fired, or that the workplace has no rules regarding the issue. Its quite hard to prove you didn't do something without witnesses or cameras to back up that the thing never happened. That's why I said its best to follow the Pence Rule, but hey I'm just paranoid.

Oh so this is just a guy's perception. I mean he's okay to have that feeling and opinion, but it doesn't mean it was a school rule.

When you repeated what you've said in the past, that you don't need evidence, have no need for scrupulous methodology because, after all, you have your own experience to guide you, you live in America, and how on Earth could you be wrong about what goes on in this country, didn't it occur to you you'd be well advised to apply the same cautionary logic?

Oh, that changes EVERYTHING. So a game they didn't like got high praise, so it's justified to freak out about it. God forbid anyone has a positive, subjective reaction about a game about Ess-Jay-Dubba stuff. God forbid a game that you don't have to buy costs a certain amount of money. Meanwhile, if you have any negative criticisms about something like say, Spiderman, then keep it to yourself because the same reactionaries will figuratively rip your head off on these forums. Criticism of highly rated games is only allowed when the conservative hivemind wills it.

And I was there. I saw the Steam forums (and Twitter, for that matter). People were freaking out about the content. Those discussions abour gay agendas and God knows what else are all still there, in the Steam forums.

I didn't think it was any good, but it indeed has a right to exist.
Some people got very bothered by the politically motivated gushing reviews, but I can see where they come from.

They can sue for wrongful termination. If what you said was that clear, then women all across the country would be getting dudes fired left and right over complete lies. In most cases there needs to be some level or type of proof that something happened. In the rare case that a terrible company decides not to use evidence on any level, then they need to be called out.

But again if what you say is true, then hiding from women in the workplace can't save you either. You could be lied on there too. M Moneal don't live your life in fear dude. It's okay lol.

didn't say hide. just never be alone. again its hard to prove wrongful termination if you can't disprove the harassment claims because there are no witnesses except the accuser and the accused.

If any company were to fire a guy based off of an allegation with literally "zero" proof then yeah that's a terrible company and I'd hope the people running it all lose their jobs in the future. Rule of law and fairness matters to all sides. Now if this same guy has like 8 people accusing him of the same sexual allegations.......then well.........sorry guy but you gotta go lol.

That was in response to my post. I didn't take it as "woe is me" or crying. Nobody is saying anyone is being deprived of anything.

We both, in fact, agree that "diversity training" in companies doesn't necessarily promote diversity in creative output.

You don't have be an "SJW" to want diverse games, and you don't have to be a "Gam3r" to be suspicious of the political agenda of these progressive ideas and practices.

"Woe is us" who can't find our bearing in this new politicized space.

There is a difference here. You can like a game for sure but to be it GOTY it has to do something more even gameplay related. This game got high praise jsut because of the LGBT topic and that is not even new in games. And when people saw this they of course went upset.

You know what really funny? Go to the resetera thread of the recent gone home part and see how less people it still like because it was not a good game. They only thought it was GOTY because of the topic and nothing else. And Gone Home is the perfect example when so called games "journalism" went wrong and how qality of a game does not matter much anymore as long it fullfills their political agenda.

Nothing about Sarkeesian makes any sense, it's obvious gamers as a whole just don't like her, so why do they still want to shove her bullshit down our throats? Why can't they just move on already?

6 years of her bullshit, why do we have to kiss her ass? she's already fucked off to talking about Star Trek anyway, just let it go.

And this specific story really bugs me because otherwise I really like Ubisoft's games for the most part.

If any of you men feel this way (the bolded) you need to check yourself. It's probably you! Don't blame women for that. It's just you guys being weidos. And why would a teacher need to close the door to talk to one of his pupils?
Maybe some men feel the same way about women as Sarkeesian feels about men.....

Interesting CNN report that is related to topic at hand. Wonder if anybody here has first hand experience?

i just went to her Twitter to see that "Trust No Man" picture and it's not there. there is instead a picture of blueberry pie or something.

even for radical feminists, a phrase like that can mainly be used for posturing & hyperbole. one feminist i follow on insta is super woke complaining about cis men all the time, of course she only has ever exclusively dated men. guess if you can stand her bitching about men enough she will fuck you.

imo she is a basic culture critic, on the level of RLM or someone. she makes some good points, she makes some bullshit points. like anybody you have to take it with a grain of salt. you have to think critically. she talks about very basic 101 feminism but mainstream culture has long feared any kind of feminism so there is an instinctual assumption of the most extreme type. fwiw i've watched like a dozen or so of her videos and she has never said anything like "Trust no man".

there are for real radical feminists out there and she is not that. the ironic thing is when people go out of their way to paint her as some horrible all powerful person, it only promotes her, it makes her sympathetic, it elevates her status. a bit like Trump in a funny way...

WHAT!? RLM? Red Letter Media? Anita is nowhere near them, or any actual videogame critic. RLM understands about movie making, Anita knows nothing about game making. RLM criticizes movies on technical merits, Anita uses ideology.

Like what? She says nothing of value. She doesn't understand game design, why gamers play games, fun, etc. She is a Marxist ideology dispenser and nothing more.

It's baffling that you even consider this to be the case. Please watch any video from matthewmathosis or mandaloregaming on YouTube, and tell us Anita if is even remotely comparable.

If all you care about is feminism, then Liana Kerzner is far better than Anita. At least Liana is a gamer and understand how games work.

She was using it for months, then she changed it when she made a tweet criticising the Twitch streamer, Ninja, who said he won't play games on Twitch with women in case false rumours about him are spread around. She clearly didn't want to be criticising a man for not trusting women when she was sporting a "trust no man" banner herself.

While I'm completely on board with Sarkeesian being a joke who says nothing of value, RLM is more comedy than criticism. They're honestly not very intelligent or insightful. Their focus is really on comedy. They're basically a white trash Mystery Science Theater 3000. Mike Stoklasa liked and defended Jurassic World. Give me a break dude.

White trash really? Trash was not enough? You had to include race?^^

People like her forget that they needed "male juice" to be born in the first place. Sorry to be harsh, but that's reality, all of us come from a man and a woman. I wonder what happened to her to make her so hateful.

You think this is toxic?

This was tweeted a few hours after a school shooting In the end it had nothing to do with masculinity. She never apologized for it as well.
What was her hot take on the two recent female-perpetrated mass shootings?

Yeah well I'm out.. This SJW stuff is just too nauseating for me. Until I get this video out of my head I'm not touching an Ubisoft game again. Anyway, I'm a human being and I treat other people as individuals, that's the only formula that works in the long run.

Why do you think she is so toxic? It is from the testosterone that allowed her birth! /s

Ultimately, she became who she was through events in her life. It is sad and I hope she learns how to treat other people with a modicum of respect instead of denigrating large swaths simply for being a different sex. Sadly, I rarely see these misandrists and "activists" change.

uhm privacy? i for one wouldn't feel comfortable opening up to my teacher if there are open doors with the off chance of people passing by hearing the conversation
Also this only goes for male teachers female teachers can close the door with no problems.
wow only in america i guess

I'm pro-sterotypes too in certain contexts and it has to done right. So to some degree, I agree with you. But you have to understand that not every dev gets it "right" and lots of times they are done because writers are lazy or just bad at creating characters. Those are the times when myself and people even like yourself need to roll our eyes and ask for better from those Developers.

And I also think some devs are lazy when it comes to writing scripts with German villians. The industry can be better than it is and it's not terrible to ask for better.

You are not asking for better, you are just asking to make videogames in a certain political way that makes you happy.

It's not political to want games that feature leads that aren't all white/straight/males. And you don't have to make it political either.

Amusingly, this was happening before the Anita types showed up. Steam and indie development increased the variety of game genres, characters and themes. There was market research on how women played games that the market was using.
