Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword E3 trailer

Pols Voice are supposed to be bunnies?
Well, when you give the Bunny Hood to the Running Man, he says something to the effect of, "I bet with those long ears you can hear the voices", and he also says that Hyrule Field used to be the home to many bunnies, but they went extinct. Some fans have theorized that these quotes connect the Bunny Hood and Pols Voices.

Exact quote: "In old times, I heard there were many wild rabbits in the land of Hyrule. Not anymore, though, because of excessive hunting. I want to become a rabbit... Listen to the wind with those ears, hop across the ground with those legs... Even if I can only pretend."

And then when you give him the mask: "I bet with those long ears you can hear the voices... Oh, these are genuine rabbit ears from the animal of legend!"

I think some people are reading too much into this, though...

Here's an interview with Koji Kondo. It's mostly about OoT but he does make mention of Skyward Sword

OSV: While we’re reminiscing about your work on Ocarina of Time, would you like to take the time to share with us what we can expect from Nintendo’s next Zelda title, Skyward Sword? Are you once again responsible for the music, and if so, who will be working with you, and what tools are being use to compose the music? You mentioned at E3 last year that since the Super Mario Galaxy team got to work with a live orchestra for large portions of that score that you were hoping to do the same with Skyward Sword. Can we expect more live orchestral music for Skyward Sword?

Kondo: Our next title, Skyward Sword, also has a wide variety of impressive songs, and it has new musical gameplay elements. Hajime Wakai is in charge of the music, but I also participated in making songs. My composition tools are an electronic piano and a Mac. We use orchestras for a few different songs where we feel that doing so is appropriate.

What do you think they mean from different musical game play elements? I assume it is different that JUST playing a song and having your horse come riding to you.

I think he was just talking about a new musical instrument. The music in the zelda games have always done more than just call your horse. We pretty much know the musical instrument is a Lyre I can't wait to hear the music you can play with it.

Should the line:

be worrying? I'm assuming he means like the mario galaxy games where most of the soundtrack is orchestrated but some tracks and music sound effects aren't. I'd be really let down if there were only "a few different songs" that were full orchestra.

Haha, I'm aware that it does more. The only real importance of music in any zelda game that I recall was raising/lowering the water in OOT. What else was there?

Some songs can be used to warp you from place to place, There's the sun song which lets you change from night to day or vice versa, and there's the song of storms which does exactly what you'd expect.

What else has he done? Right now I'm excited for the music based on the fact that all the music we've heard so far is amazing.

I guess those didn't really stand out because we have been doing that in what seems to be almost every zelda. I guess I'm up for some new musical game play elements, but we'll see. I assume what he meant was more than a new instrument but that is just me.

He did Starfox 64 (with Koji Kondo), Phantom Hourglass, New Super Mario Bros. DS and some others. The dude isn't bad, but he's really hit or miss.

I do like what we've heard so far in SS, so I'll try to be positive...

You can find much of what he's worked on here and here.

So you can include:
-The Wind Waker
-Star Fox 64
-F-Zero X Soundtrack
-Pikmin
-Pikmin 2
-NSMB DS
-Nintendogs

Oh, and the lovely little hit musical flourishes from The Wind Waker seem to be making a return, so that's nice.

So we have: Hajime Wakai, Mahito Yokota, and Koji Kondo doing stuff on this album. I wonder if Toru Minegishi is making a return?

I see five games with good soundtracks in that list so I'm no worried at all. Can't wait to hear more music.

This game is a dream come true for ZeldaxLink shippers huh.

Banking on Nintendo creating a bitter/sad ending though (although hopefully they create a happy ending instead)

So is there actually a Link/Zelda mini dating sim in SS? I haven't watched the full demoes to avoid spoilers, but I did see something about
winning the race to spend a night with her or something.

I doubt that. You probably have to
win
to forward the story or something.

The zelda universe guys said they were told by the Nintendo rep at the demo that the winner of the race gets to spend a romantic night with Zelda. I'm pretty sure the part in the trailer where zelda and link are flying together is part of that.

And then when Zelda gets kidnapped, Link looks into the camera Austin Powers style:

"Wait a second, that means I'm single again, oh behave ^^" Cue music and childish dick and balls innuendos.

I think he's referring to the fact that Hylian's long ears are said to allow them to hear the voices of the gods.

It's only that race.

If the game is done, when the hell is the release date? I didn't see it in the OP and Amazon doesn't have it listed. Also, can you pre-order that gold wiimote anywhere yet?

The music is definitely going to be a great part of this game, just by listening to the trailer theme. I mean cmon, Epic! Every time I see something about Skyward Sword I feel more and more that its going to be the best game of the franchise.

Bring it on Nintendo!

This.

I'd imagine they want to get it out before the holidays.

Yes, that's what I think as well (with regards to the bunny ears, anyway)--though he's referring to the bunny ears when you give him the Bunny Hood, rather than Link's/all Hylians' ears.

That said, I think people are reading into it too much.

Some US retailers have it listed for september, one of the Nintendo of Europe press sites had a vague 'august' release listed. I guess Nintendo is still working out their planning.

Well at E3 they said holiday 2011 so I'm guessing they want to release it around then. Makes sense that this would be their big november game. Despite that though I want the game to get a surprise release next sunday.

Surely the SMG route is the way to go?

You do realise that you don't compose music with a full orchestra present.

When writing the music and trying out ideas, you would normally sit with a piano or a guitar or some other instrument and toy with it. Then you would bring all the various musical parts together in a sequencer/midi program and see if it sounds right with the various instruments together.

Then with the composition all working, only then would you gather the orchestra and rehearse - adjusting and tweaking based on what you heard in rehearsals. Finally performing the final piece in various takes.

Orchestras or live performers are expensive!

I think what the problem is though, is that Kondo states it in such a way that implies most of the finished tracks that made it into the game are MIDI, while only a select few of them got the orchestrated treatment.

I thought it would have been the other way around, honestly.

It would be really embarrassing if only a "few" tracks are orchestrated, after Nintendo made such a big deal of the orchestra at their E3 conference.

Methinks they're going the Galaxy 1 and 2 way. A third fully orchestrated, a third fully MIDI, and a third mixing the two.

MIDI compositions can sound absolutely amazing with good software instruments. MIDI is just a bunch of digital instructions (what note to play when, etc.); it doesn't say a thing about how good anything is going to sound. Just listen to some of the samples on this page: http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/vst/halionorchestra_product.html

That's 100% MIDI, just with a really good set of software instruments. Obviously the Wii couldn't use samples of that quality in realtime, but if the music was prerecorded it could sound great without actually having been recorded with a live orchestra.

Another pretty amazing software instrument (piano) is The Grand: http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/vst/thegrand3/start.html

True. On the other hand, even in Super Mario Galaxy 2 you can tell when it switches over to MIDI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHk9W9FQfL0

Wouldn't it be mind blowing if Nintendo revealed that everything we heard in the E3 demo was midi?

no, it's obvious the difference between midi and orchestra - even with the high quality stuff - if your ears are even a little trained.

It wouldn't be mind blowing because I'd just say it was a lie.
