Lets revive a childhood argument: Pokemon vs Digimon

Pokemon produced the very best games out of the three. The videogames are fantastic RPGs and are still going strong (playing Fire Red on my PSP Go right now). The card game was also absolutely fantastic even if nobody in the school yard stuck to the 'official rules'.

On the other hand, the Digimon cartoon destroyed Pokemon because it wasn't so overly corny - it was all edgy and digital and shit, and it was awesome when they started combining all of the different series' characters together in the movies. They were great from what I remember (I was burned by the terrible Pokemon movie featuring Mew vs Mewtwo - it stunk about as bad as The Simpsons movie).

In terms of programming, I'd have to say:

Digimon Tamers > Medabots > Pokémon (whenever Ash reaches the Pokémon league) > everything else.

Tamers is legitimately good programming, rather than being "good for a merchandise show". Medabots didn't take itself too seriously and the dub was pretty funny, and still had its cool moments. They're also the only Japanese merchandise shows I could actually recommend to someone with no interest in the products.

Pokemon league and certain Gym episodes are about the only rewatchable Pokemon eps, although the PCi dub kind of ruined the Sinnoh league by changing the music.

Digimon S1 > all of those

I really loved the digimon anime, but I never liked the cards, games, or anything like that.
The pokemon show was okay, but the games were (and still are) amazingly addictive.

Medabots and Monster Rancher were awesome shows. I still feel bad I never finished seeing them. Luckily, medabots is on amazon, so I plan on eventually picking that up. I need to find out about monster rancher...

Anyone remember fighting foodons? I never really watched it, but I remember thinking it looked like a really bad knock off of the above.

machinedramon was pretty boss but even i know season 3 was the tops.

even with all the renamon fanfiction and furry porn in hindsight, season 3 is still better.

Heartcatch Precure! is better at infomercialising than Pokeymanz.

The new My Little Pony show is better at being subtle about selling toys than freaking Pokeymanz. Pokeymanz animu has no shame about its true nature.

People always praise season3, but I just couldn't get into it when it originally aired.
I stuck with it for some time, but I eventually just sort of forgot to watch. I've been wanting to go back and watch it as time has passed. Season 1 was just a really spot-on show for me when it aired, but I would probably really enjoy 3 now. 2 never quite made me love it enough, though. Davis was probably responsible for that...

I've wanted to rewatch all 1-3, but they don't sell them anymore. : |
I'm praying that digital distribution will save them from the grave, and they'll wind up on amazon some time soon.

this is a bit of a spoiler, but it gets alot better when the bad guys successfully commit digimon genocide while the kids are forced to watch.

Season 5 is tops for me, followed very closely by Season 3. The twist around the mid-point seals the deal.

DO NOT WATCH THE DUBBED VERSION OF S5. I had the good luck of watching the subbed version with a friend, and decided to give the dubbed version a shot when it came out. It was...ugh, with a side of ugh.

Wait, how exactly is the Pokemon cartoon about selling toys? Are you talking about the fact that new series of the show coincide with new games? Because it is a show based on a video game, so when a game with a new region and Pokemon comes out of course they are going to cover it in the show instead of staying in Kanto with that region of Pokemon forever.
It's not like the series explicitly says "This episode is about Snivy which you can only get in Pokemon Black and White, available now."

S5 was all about the power of hotblooded manfist.

In terms of games I'm going with Pokemon but I love the Digimon anime.

Season 3 for me had the best story premise and main cast. Season 5 was fun and I don't really mind the dub. Marcus was sort of a lame and tamer Kamina. I at least liked his and Agumon's enthusiasm.

I don't really like the other seasons that much. Season 2 was so lame and Season 4 was sort of off for me. I don't remember much about Season 1 so I don't have an opinion on it.

Sometimes I wonder if you live in the same world as the rest of us. :P

Non-game/TCG Pokémon merchandise is HUGE. It's lucrative enough that there are shops in Japan dedicated to selling Pokemon plushes, toys and clothing. Nintendo World Store was once one of these too, and according to Bulbapedia there a few smaller place scattered around the US.

I totally rocked a digimon virtual pet in elementary school

I was the only motherfucker with a Teddymon. Dude was broken as fuck. Won like, every versus battle.
