Amazing.

I liked so much at this years E3, its hard to pick just one. Rock Band stands out, but I have to see how they handle the vocals. Some of the demos I've seen mix the singer with the original track and it just sounds goofy. That could be just poor mixing on the part of people recording the demos too. Halo 3's trailer was really poorly edited and just didn't have the impact of a gameplay session. Killzone 2 looks good, but that's all it did. Super Mario Galaxy looks great too, visually the best thing I've seen on Wii, which isn't saying much. But I bought Mario Sunshine, and I'll Galaxy too. Everyone is going on about Little big Planet, but beyond level construction, playing just seems really simple.

That leaves Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4. Call of Duty just messed me up. Never expected it to look so good and have all the viseral COD moments too. But Mass Effect stole it. The conversation system, the galaxy exploration, action elements, and typically EPIC Bioware story.. It's hard to beat.

If you don't agree, then watch this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=V4CsicNuiIE

Runners up:
Metroid Prime 3, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4 and Wii Fit

OK, I took your advice and I'll firmly place Mario behind Ratchet and Clank Future, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Mass Effect, and probably about 10 other games.

I tend to look at Nintendo first-party games like this: replace the main character with character X - is it still a great game, or getting by on nostalgia. It's like Shoe said about Halo Wars - yeah, it looks cool because it's Halo, but if you replace those characters with generic character X, it's really nothing special.

Howbout no? This thread is about listing your personal GOTS, not justifications for it. That will turn ugly quick. Why cant you just accept it? It just so happens SMG is winning by a large margin, and it seems like you're offended by it.

offended, no. i could care less about a mario game having the most on this site.

That would probably make sense if we were dealing with something like Mario Party. Fortunately, that is not the case.

Well, there's your problem right there, you should be PLAYING THEM :P
Anyway, I'm not going to discuss this any further.

Actually, I played Wii for the FIRST time this past weekend and have to say I felt it was a great game to mess around with while drinking, but on a 50" Plasma it made my eyes hurt (and not in a good way).

My vote goes for Super Mario Galaxy. I have never seen such an amazing inventive platformer. Well actually Lil Big Planet. But my vote stands.

EAD. Bring us more games like this!!!!

Mass Effect. Only people that didn't watch the Gamespot Live demo (and idiots :P) could say anything different.

First Runner Up: Super Mario Galaxy
Second Runner Up: COD4
Third Runner Up: Killzone 2

Honorable Mentions: Zack and Wiki, Assassin's Creed

Insanely cute, innovative, and with endless possibilities and a potential huge community.

Isn't that the same thing they said about Viva Pinata? :lol

SMG with Mass Effect v close 2nd for me :)

Totally wrong. That's the kind of logic that would make everybody love Mario Part. People are excited about the game because of how original and awesome it looks.

Can't wait. Most anticipated game since Super Mario 64.

I still remember, My mom took me to Toys R Us every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to play it before launch(I was 6). My first play with it was Super Mario 64 in Snowman's Land, the 2nd snow level, which is embedded in my brain as my biggest gaming moment, playing Mario in 3D.

1. Killzone 2
The more I watch the trailer and the gameplay demo the more I notice the nuanced details that make a game really amazing. Theyve been talked to death, but the lighting and post processing effects have such an effect on me as a gamer and to say the least, I cant wait.

I wish I could say it was MGS4, but the trailer they showed wasnt as earth shaking as other games shown.

so, game of the show based on what we saw on the internet/TV?

if that's the case, it has to be killzone 2.

i'm not in the sci-fi camp, so that rules out a bunch of 360 games (please ignore what you may consider an attempt of trolling).

i really, really liked uncharted and COD4, so they would be my runner ups...

need for speed pro street came out of nowhere and deserves a mention. that the NFS i'm waiting since HP2.

no sports games worht of mention, since my beloved NBA 2K was missing on the show...

i wish i could vote for GT5 in some category, but we just saw the trailer...

worst game of the show: NBA 08 of the PS3. my god, that game has so many things going wrong that i don't know they showed in the conference...

I'm a huge Ratchet fan (Going Commando > Mario Sunshine), but get real. SMG > R&C:F. Look at the videos, the game looks remarkable.

I don't know what my game of the show is, though. My most anticipated game is Halo 3, followed by SMG. But game of the show? Mass Effect suddenly jumped on my radar after months of not giving a shit, that monochrome PSP/PSN game looked cool... I think I ultimately have to go for Mario Galaxy. It's not only a return to form, but a reinvention of the platformer.

Killzone 2, this blew our minds as much as the circa 2005 trailer. I won't explain too much but this one just stole everyones thunder.

I think the fact that it actually came close to the trailer is grounds for major props. I can't think of any other game at E3 that had this gigantic stigma attached, and came through.

I'll throw in a vote for Metroid Prime 3. I wasn't really hyped for this game until I watched some gameplay footage.

After that, I'll have to go with Galaxy.

That's a valid way to look at a mario game, but even then I think Mario Galaxy looks very original and has amazing design. I say this only having played half of Mario 64 (never owned it until now on VC), and never having played Sunshine. Difference of opinion though, of course.

I'm assuming the game you played was Wii Sports, and not just Wii? :)

I saw it and other than the graphics in the interaction sequences, I can say with all honesty that Mass Effect wasn't anything worth touching myself over. Impressive? Yes. KZ2, SMG even HS impressive? No.

That's why I gave it to Killzone 2 also. I know the game has a lot of game play potential and all, plus what we so was amazing but compared to what we saw of Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy and Little Big Planet, Killzone 2 was more about delivering the target rendering than actually showing off the game itself.

If it weren't for that "stigma attached" Killzone I would've objectively voted for Little Big Planet or even Mass Effect. I gave Mass Effect GOTS last E3 as well so I am sort of not giving it its due now but then again same thing for Super Mario Galaxy. So yea, Lost Planet #2 with Killzone 2 #1 for me.

To the guy counting, DON'T COUNT THIS POST AS I HAVE ALREADY SAID KILLZONE.

You didn't think the scope of the galaxy, smoothness and effectiveness of the conversation system, seamless animation, great vehicular segment, and interesting integration of real time RPG combat, squad mechanics, and shooting looked better than the same old linear shooting path offered by Killzone 2, (albeit with EXCELLENT graphics and sound design) same old platforming offered by Super Mario Galaxy, (albeit with great art design and interesting level design) and same old action gameplay offered by Heavenly Sword? (Albeit with nice..um..facial animation?)

Now, maybe I was bit extreme with my reduction of the aforementioned three nominees of yours, but the point I'm trying to make is this: while all of those games look to offer the best of their respective genres, they didn't bring to the table (at E3 at least) the innovation and depth of content I saw in Mass Effect.

(Super Mario Galaxy, IMO, did change up the level design. It's just the foundation of gameplay seems to remain largely untouched. Not that that is necessarily bad, it just means it didn't have the potential to impress me with something new like Mass Effect did. I would give it first runner up, easily.)

LBP and Viva Pinata are on two totally different levels. LBP really does have endless potential in the creativity department, and with it the potential for a great community behind it. My only concern is how old it will get and how quickly. There's only so much platforming one can take. It lacks that driving competitive element that keeps online game communities around. We'll see though. I'd put stock in it.

Did I vote yet?

If I didn't Mass Effect far and away for me.

LBP was mine, I wasn't convinced of the game at first but seeing how easy it is to create unique things in the game. Then hearing about Time trials and enemies in the game sold me completely on it.

Runner Up: Killzone 2

Not much else at the show was a surprise at all.

Oh, and I should probably throw this out there as well: sleeper hit of the show was Turok. Didn't expect much from yet another franchise reboot (Especially considering I wasn't even a Turok fan back in the day.) but it truly impresses. Glad to see it delayed till next year so it gets the room it needs. Well done, bishop and co.
