i think "author of popular brain teasers" is what suggests a brain training cash-in of debatable gameness
Yes, much like Miyamoto's schooling in industrial design suggests that all his games are about designing building layouts and building skyscrapers. :D

news for N-fans

Nintendo conference has just started in Japan
Miyamoto has just announced "Health Pack" (code name) for Wii
and a new cooking guide (similar to cooking Navi) for DS also announced

Start a thread please. :D

Yeah, what's the online portion?
So far it looks like you can download quests, but I haven't seen anything else.

Oh I have no clue. I just assumed it would be playable online due to the icons.

Can you make a new thread related to the conference please ? I fear that the informations you will give us will be drowned by the debate on this thread.

neo love is neo

It's not an RPG, and they brought in some brain teasing guy to direct. That's already two strikes! It may be good, but it's not so interesting yet... maybe more details will make it better.

we know the platform too , is that a strike for some? (serious question)

Yeah, the icons are the type of quest, I believe. It's from a list of quests and each one has an icon on the right... I assume that's the shot you're talking about. Could be an online-playable quest, I guess. We know nothing right now.

Well based on DS ability to ruin everything good, I would almost say yes...but...somehow Megaman and castlevania make it out alive, so who knows!

One of the best developers now on DS! The DS saved gaming so this isn't really a surprise.

More like "Level 5 now a shitty developer! The DS ruined Level 5 so this isn't a surprise."

When is Iga going to do the right thing and release a 2.5d Castlevania on PSP?

*squint*
I'm trying to take that in, but i think my brain has just been sick.

other than the PSP, what has the DS ruined?

is that so far from the truth? level 5 is a good developer on this side of the looking glass, but that doesn't begin to tell us what they'll do on ds. kojipro goes from mgs to the nikkei. snk goes from kof to rape rape preschool. nintendo goes from zelda to all kinds of noxious bullshit. etc.

From my perspective, a lot! But this is a Level 5 thread, so let's just hope something good comes from this... more details will make this better, I hope.

Do you really believe this?

Every week in Japan, PSP is either 2nd or 3rd depending on what PS2 is doing.

"Selling like Shit"? :lol
Hardware is one thing, but the current attach rate for the PSP is less than one. That speaks volumes.

i mean nobody is gonna buy PSP games, so no reason to make anything elaborate. Be glad level 5 is making an SRPG at all, in fact sugarhigh :P

Should I have made this a DS thread instead? I was toying with "Brand new DS game from famous Brain Teaser author" too! :D

Haahhaha, no your thread title is better. It lures in believers!

Well obviously.

Level 5 has never made an AVG before: "I'm cautious, it'll probably be shit like every other DS game."
Level 5 has never made an SRPG before: "Wow, it'll be awesome like every other PSP game."

They're making Jeanne d'Arc for SCE, so obviously the financial backing is in place. They're publishing this DS title by themselves, so it makes sense to make a smart platform decision, does it not? :P

Oh, absolutely DS is the right platform for money. Also "SRPG" is still an "RPG", and Level 5 always makes awesome RPGs. Level 5 has never made anything related to an adventure game from what I know, and bringing in a brain teasing guy to direct seems a little...I dunno, I guess I need more details like I said. This could go either way, conceivably. If it's a string of brain teasing puzzles or something, that'd be lame. If it's a neat sort of Myst-esque thing, but with Level 5 at the helm that may be cool.

Well, Jonny certainly nailed it.

Look, they never made an SRPG for -- but when Jeanne was announced, that was one of the things I found most interesting about it. "Okay, Level 5's never done an SRPG, and they're a creative group, so it'll be nice to see them apply their ideas to that genre."

Why is adventure any different? I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do.

It's an adventure game. That's been stated quite clearly. Adventure game != Brain Teaser game. He's also not "brain teasing guy," he's someone who designs puzzles -- which, again, are rather central to adventure games... no? Wouldn't solid puzzle design be considered a plus, since they typically make or break the games?

Akihiro Hino is still producing and doing the planning on the game. The reaction is expected, but still disappointing.

I dunno, it seems to me bringing in a guy who doesn't really make videogames to direct one (at least, I don't think this guy has made one before) seems odd to me. We'll know with the details, I guess.

Kinda like how your favorite game series ever is made by an author who never made games before.

oh ho ho ho. Touche. Although, that's been 15 years hence since the original Mother and it sticks to some really conventional game design outside of the story and characters, so we'll see.

huh? i'm a little lost here - he's directing the puzzles, what with his primary skill area being puzzle design. Artists , musicians, directors, writers, scripters etc.... these are all used in games to enhance the experience - i really can't see how this is a bad thing.

I'd like to see video games get more help from the outside - especially for storytelling/scripts/voice acting....

It says he's the directing supervisor, doesn't say he's JUST overlooking the puzzles. The entire game design, presumably, is directed by him. We'll see, though! It's true I'm always cautious when approaching DS games these days because of the systems history, so when some game is announced - from a developer I love, no less - directed by a guy who typically has nothing to do with videogames, I pause.

what does a directing supervisor do ? And what did the original link say (japanese)?

and you've hated almost everything DS (and Wii related i might add) based on the efforts of established video games creators, so how can this really be ANY worse?!

i dunno what the original link said, this is what duckroll said of the game

have a look - Hino is planner/producer - so i'm guessing he's taking the important videogames related decissions not Mr Puzzle.

But those that are by people who aren't established - like the Brain Training games - are even worse. :lol

Like I said, I guess we'll know with more details! It's Level 5, I've loved everything they made... I'm just being cautious here.
