Lez talk mechanical keyboards

Mechanical keyboards tend to be loud too. You can use O-rings to silence them a bit but it also makes them have a slightly mushier feel and overall doesn't do a huge lot for noise. Any clicky switches like Cherry MX Blues or Greens are going to be the loudest, but at the same time the linear switches like MX Reds can also be loud because they take quite little force to press to the bottom. I'm guessing your current keyboard makes some sort of clicky noise with its weird switch so it's closer to Blues in sound.

Corsair does a keyboard with MX Silent switches but I doubt they are that much quieter in reality and the price is higher than your budget.

For 100 bucks you are quite limited in your options unless you buy used.

My current keyboard sounds a bit like clicks, yeah. I think that they're modified MX Blues after reading through everything.

Do my chances get a bit better with a 200$ budget?

I'm not sure what the terminology is for this, but full size with and/or without a number pad.
A Ducky One w/ PBT caps, comes in both TKL or full size variants

or

Leopold FC750R (tkl/no numpad, also comes in diff colors, just search for fc750r brown)

Leopold FC900R (fullsize, comes in diff colors like the 750, search for fc900r to see them)

Pick whichever you like most, they're all high quality. A bit over $100, but not too much.

My TKL CM Quickfire finally came. First mechanical keyboard I've used in well over a decade, use it mostly for writing. I love it, typing is music.

Are those two keys missing LEDs? Or are they off because the backlight is used as an indicator?

That's interesting. Is there a way to have it on by default? I think it would bother me and look like it's broken haha

There are several presets and all the lights are customizable. Though I pretty much just leave them as-is. Light in my office is usually very low, so clear backlighting was a priority.

I'll take a look, thank you!

Do my chances get a bit better with a 200$ budget?

Absolutely. That puts you into territory where you can get for example used Topre keyboards and those feel and sound fantastic. They come in full and tenkeyless sizes.

About $140 will get you a new Vortex Pok3r if you happen to be interested in getting a smaller keyboard. Which in my book you should as it is more comfortable to use (mouse can be kept closer, less moving your hands required) and doesn't really miss anything but a numpad.

Just got my Topre and must say it feels a lot different from cherry MX, completely different. Will probably take few days to get used to this but already typing pretty fast and it feels like I'm typing on clouds, loving it so far.

I bought last week a realforce 68, my first mech, and I also bought some extra keys for it on taobao using bhiner. Before shipping it was 12€, not extremely bad.

Today they told me they fucking told me it will cost 23 fucking euros to ship four fucking keys to me! Will talk tomorrow morning to them to try changing the shipping company or the price, but I don't think I'll ever use them again.

Still torn on whether I want the YOTM edition or the regular Shine 6.

Not a biggest fan of the design but the Shine 6 isn't great either (that weird fake heatsink thing on the back..) and the anodized aluminum case of the YOTM sounds real nice.

leaning toward just going ahead and preordering the YOTM
The aluminum case is a pretty cool selling point. It's also a limited edition model.

Getting my first Mehanical Keyboard (MX Blue; Full) I'm split between 2 choices:

-K70 LUX ($99 at Amazon.com with Prime Shipping) (Only 8 left in stock for Prime shipping)
-Ducky Shine 5 ($149 w/ free shipping at mechanicalkeyboards.com)

Heard Ducky Keyboards have superior quality compared to Corsair, but is it worth paying the extra $50, or should I just go for the K70?
The Corsair you linked here isn't RGB, it's a single color backlight, so a more comparable option would be a backlit Ducky One. But a Shine 5 is definitely a good pick, especially if the RGB lighting intrigues you.

Ducky is definitely worth the extra money though, whether it be like $5-20 more for the One or the $50 extra for the Shine 5. A steel mounting plate (vs. aluminum in Corsair) and much higher quality stock double-shot ABS keycaps. The keycaps in the Corsair are singleshot paper-thin ABS that shine/wear out very quickly, which you can't even replace because they use a non-standard bottom row (there is one K70-specific keycap set I've seen, but it's pretty low quality). Ducky uses a standard bottom row which means you can use pretty much every keycap set on the market.

Go for Ducky.

Thanks, what Ducky should I go for if I simply want MX blues, full keys, have stage feet in the back, and an led backlight?

Ducky One or Zero looks like the best option for that

Edit: Leaning very towards Ducky Zero with LED
Ducky One is your best bet for that.

The Zero should be fine too but I don't think it's in stock on mechanicalkeyboards

Are das keyboards no longer a thing? That's what I have and love it, but feel like nobody talks about them anymore.

Das Keyboard is still around, they don't get talked about as much anymore as among the enthusiast community they are seen as overpriced and supposedly the quality of their keyboards isn't as good anymore.

I have one (two), and actually just bought a 4 ultimate for a friend earlier in the month.

The keyboard I use is a 4c with the switches replaced with MX blues and and PBT keycaps. Ended up costing more than I expected, lol. I think my older Das Keyboard 2 with MX blues honestly feels like the better keyboard, too.

I've just gotten so used the the tenkeyless size though...

Inherited a Corsair K70 mechanical keyboard when I bought a co-worker's desktop off him. It's great but some of the keys get a bit stiff. What's the best way to clean or deal with these troublesome keys?

Probably already addressed a billion times over, but are Logitechs mechanicals any good?
Plenty of reviews out there. My impression is they're probably decent quality, but the price is high for what you get. If you like the lighting etc. features, not a bad buy, but even then I'd look at brands like Ducky first. One thing that's nice about the Logitech boards is that it's such a large volume manufacturer that you can probably find much steeper and more frequent discounts on them. If I saw one at, say, 50% off, I'd pick it up instantly for work.

Same as above, I'm sure there are better ones for the price but if you like the extra features then they're worth it. For example I didn't like how in other keyboards usually the lighting is too bright (even on the lowest brightness) and lights the gaps too (an extreme example), in my G710+ it's much more subtle and lights only the characters (example). I also like the macro and media buttons, volume wheel and extra usb port very much on my G710+. A word of warning though, the Logitech gaming software can be a bit unstable (althought most problems I've had have been with my mouse).

I bought a burrito so heavy last night that its weight caused my to-go sauce to fly and spill all over my apple keyboard

So I'll probably be getting a keyboard pretty soon...

membrane keyboards you mean the "gummy" ones?

Yes, those are membrane keyboards.

But happy hacking keyboards are special, because of their super minimized layouts. I can see the appeal, but it would be too much of a hassle for me to constantly use an fn key for special characters and numbers. Hell, I don't think I could even go tenkeyless.

It's all a matter of preference.

Kinda crazy......never had any experience with mechanical's. Bought two on a whim. One for myself and one for my son (Corsair Strafe, standard and RGB). Within a week, bought two more. Another Strafe for my wife and a K70, both for our work. None of us will go back to standard KB's. Phenomenal products.

Can I ask you guys a curiosity? What's so good in the happy hacking keyboards to justify the price?
Topre switches, novelty layout, branding, legacy (it's old).

imo a non-programmable 60% (ish) in 2016 is a pretty hard sell, at any price really, but especially at HHKB prices. There's replacement controllers but that adds even more to the already hefty pricetag. I think it's all plastic too, as opposed to stock Realforces that have steel mounting plates.
Thanks for the help :)
glad it wasn't broken out of the box, I would've helped more but I don't have a Zero :c

Look what I found on my "workplace"! http://imgur.com/a/qqjTS
Must be 30 years old, and the keycaps fit into my Magicforce! Shame the profile is not the same. I think I'll use the arrow keys.

Also, has someone used the Anne pro?
A 60% with wireless, rgb and gateron looks great.

Finally have my ergodox, and so far I love it! But, it will DEFINITELY take some getting used to. It being ortholinear is really messing up my accuracy on the bottom row of keys. But, other than that it's very comfy to type on.

I would say it's not really ortholinear, with the column staggering (Matrix, Plancks, Atomics, Preonics... are real OL to me)

I agree that the bottom row need some time (and I'm still not fond of the thumb cluster position/default keycaps).

Which Ergodox?

I recently bought a WASD with blue switches for typing and it's been a dream but I don't like it much for gaming. Thought I'd try out a Logitech G410 with red switches and I love it for gaming cause it's just so smooth and solid but I can't stand it for typing. I'm actually considering keeping both and using the WASD for 90% of the time and using the Logitech for those rare instances where I want to play a game with KB/M. I probably won't though cause it's just too expensive to keep both so I'll just stick with my cherry blues.

Btw I'm very impressed with the Logitech G410. It has great features, genuine cherry red switches, non gaming keyboard look (this is actually very important for me) and was only $90.

I just got a Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum. I had my eyes on the Orion Spark for a while but held off because of the bizarre keycaps. So far I'm really liking the Romer-G switches, FAR more than I ever liked the MX Reds on my old Corsair K60, which were alright for gaming but a nightmare for me to type on. These switches definitely aren't for everyone, but I think Logitech has a good thing going and I hope they stick with them.

The RGB LEDs in Logitech's new keyboards are fantastic, especially once you install Aurora or a similar application.

Only reason I got the G910 over the G810 is for the extra macro keys, which I use a ton in WoW.

Thought I replied to this lol.

I guess I see your point about it not actually being ortholinear, but damn it's weird having them lined up vertically. Comfy, but weird.

I'm getting a little bit better, starting to float my fingers off the keyboard again, but it'll be another little bit before I can stop thinking as I type.

I definitely want an SA keycap set with this though. As it stands, I've got the DSA, and while it feels nice, I had to kidnap some generic Backspace keys for my four 2.0 sized thumb keys, so they are raised up while everything else is too low. I've ordered the correct DSA thumbkeys but I think I wanna push the other keys up too.

Other than that, I'm loving the customizability of the keyboard, and the fact that I built it by hand is really nice too. :D

It sounds like you need Browns. My Ducky brown is so smooth that it's almost like reds, but with just a slight feel. Also more non gaming look than the logitech

This is one of the few times I wish retail were bigger (or have a rental service or something) I want a mechanical keyboard but dont 'want to drop 100+ dollars on something I don't like

You don't need to drop 100 dollars on something you don't like. There is a very good mechanical keyboard with knock-off Cherry switches that costs at most 40$ on Amazon. It's called the Qisan Magicforce 68. There are also switch testers available on Massdrop for under 20$.
