Which is a theme that makes Final Fantasy what it is yet Square does not see that as what makes Final Fantasy which means the old concept of friendship overcomes any obstacle is dwindling.

And with this game I fear Liberator of Souls will mean Lightning will kill off her old allies.

Power of friendship is a very hard concept to do right, and it's extremely easy to slip into deus ex machina territory due to writing yourself into a corner.

Well when you have Toriyama writing it's best to not delve into that territory when you rely on bad anime to get you through something.

I found the initial marketing campaign for this game interesting though. "The Last Game You Will Ever Play".

It's like they know it's bad.

Is that first Trinity one actually good? I like basically every other game in your list a lot, though a bit underwhelmed by Resonance of Fate, but Trinity always looked super meh and got pretty bad reviews.

If you were underwhelmed by RoF then Trinity will seem like the worst game in the world to you. It's completely below average in every single way. I had to stop playing it since it came to a point where I was just forcing myself to play and for me that's pretty rare. I'd avoid at all costs.

So bad it'll make you want to kill yourself.

That might taking it too far.

The 16 bit sprite looked better.

Always wondered why Square never got indepth with Pixel Art.

Site doesn't seem to have much animations. Limiting.

Didn't even realize that was supposed to be Lightning. Not enough flowing hair.

His artstyle is distinct enough to spot. Another game that will never be released, Card Saga Wars. That game looks totes dinosaurs.

Still following it. Last update was in 2011. Video with Lenneth Valkyrie and that other Valkyrie from Namco.

The artist did make this recently though. Dunno what's going on with it though.

I'm sure it has been noticed already. But I just found that it seems the costume will change according to the roles.

Combined with the information released from the interview, I don't think the system is taken straightly from FFX-2. My guess is player can set costume for each role....

No, you got it reversed. The "role" title is assigned based on equipment combinations, just like how Paradigms get their titles when you put different role combinations together for the party in FFXIII and FFXIII-2. In this case, Lightning is the only playable character, so her equipment is the "party".

Valkyrie Lightning At The Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Special Stage Event

Square Enix and Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong hosted a Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event at Asia Game Show. Shinji Hashimoto, Yoshinori Kitase, and Lightning showed up to the celebrate.

After cutting the cake, Kitase talked about Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and announced the Asian version which has Chinese/English text plus Japanese voices.

Pretty much. Somehow the clothing design for these games has regressed backward since.

I half agree here. Her first design is in my opinion her best and my favorite character design ever (more or less); I did find the second's one one of the ugliest instead... while the last one, while not totally digging it, I can look at her.

Great piece of art. Love me some X and Cloud.

Haven't heard anything about this in a long time, but at least a new piece of art is awesome.

I put it in my "not as bad as you may think" pile (and I suggested it because its atmosphere and general designs were the opposite of what he wanted). If you like Omega-Force developed games (ie: Musou) you'll probably get something out of this.

I've never played the demo so I have no idea what that's like, but in terms of gameplay, it plays like Musou (so... if button-mashing ain't for you, don't bother). You might not appreciate the lack of lock-on because you might find yourself swinging at nothing, or how the animations' physics are weird (ie: you swing too fast sometimes or too slow sometimes). For the full game, the narrative might be a little lacking, but it's mostly about this half-elf who's trying to get revenge against his grandfather for instigating his father's death and almost killed his mother (because of some prophecy that the main character would kill him when he reaches adulthood). The narrative was more mature than I thought it was going to be, and I don't like the manner in which it's presented at times.

Um. In terms of battling, you have three characters at your disposal (and they all come from different races, so that kind of plays a little bit into the atmosphere of the game since racial tensions can be high). You can switch characters at will. Each of these characters have elemental properties (so the MC has fire, the girl has ice, the muscular dude has lightning; they also gain access to attacks like shoot attacks or whatever). Obviously because of this, most enemies are going to have a weakness against certain attacks so if you want to keep having a combat advantage you need to fight more, get more orbs post-fighting to level up your skills, switch between characters. You can also get different skillsets for each character as you progress through the game, which give them better passives and actives depending on what kind of fighting style you like.

The game is kinda loot driven (so half of your rewards from battle are either going to be cash or armours/weapons). A lot of the time, you're going to be doing guild quests, which as you may know from other games, comes in several different varieties (ie: kill X of these, get this thing from this section of the dungeon (which might come with a miniboss), kill this miniboss, escort me to this area (and it's not as shit as AC because the AI doesn't go and get themselves killed), rescue this dude, etc.). You get money, items, and XP from the guild quests. Towns also have different things. Like, the first town you start in has an arena (so you can participate in battles for items for a fee), a casino (that you have to work towards to unlock), and the usual shops. So... there's a lot to do, but whether or not that stuff is fun or boring to you depends entirely on your tastes.

If you can take the game not looking that awesome, being Musou in a fantasy world, or handling that well, maybe you might think it's neat? I mean, it's ok. It's not going to be spectacular, and if you can stand a little jank, I guess you can try it out when it's on the cheap. Problem is that it lacks depth, the story isn't super strong for those who like cutscenes and exposition at every turn, and it's rather average. I don't think it's terrible because I've played much worse.

I've never played the demo so I have no idea whether or not the final product differs from it. And as you know, RPG demos are never that great.

I really wish people would see how manipulative mobage is and how utterly stupid "playing" them is. All you do is literally press one button and watch glorified dice rolls, where's the fun in that? How can they not see it's robbing them blind? SE (and most game companies in Japan) won't stop expanding into the mobile space because it's easy money, but I don't really blame them. I blame the people who "play" these games.

there arent really that many people who play them, they just count on a couple of lunatics who'll spend thousands to make them a profit because of how little they spend on the game.

It still shifts SE's focus because it's easy money.

Im baffled this company still exists. How do you have such a large studio when you release two games a decade?

They're being propped up by social games and Eidos.

KOS-MOS doesn't look robotic enough for me, but I like the other 3!

And Lightning's FFXIII design is easily her best

Because they release a lot more games than just two. They released a lot of handheld and mobile games and they published a few RPGs on consoles besides their FF stuff. Also, the games Eidos has release keeps some income for them.

Didn't you get the memo? Handhelds don't count mang!

Which is unfortunate, because the best Final Fantasy games this gen came out on handhelds: Type-0 and 4HoL.

Echoes of Time was considerably better than expected, but it could just have appealed to my fancies.

EDIT: All there best games this gen were hand held. Birth By Sleep, Duodecim, The World Ends With You . . .

Kinda random, but reading a LR article on Silconera and I'm starting to think there's maybe a small chance XIII and VersusXIII may be linked.

Why you ask:

-Bhunevielze (sp) is the ultimate power in XIII's mythology and has apparently been in a long sleep for thousands of years

-Etro is of importance in both titles

-This is stated in the article
To put it simply, the world is going to end in 13 days, and a new world will be born after that. The Liberator’s job is to help Bhunivelze, a Fabula Nova Crystallis god, in helping souls transfer to the new world. Lightning’s new outfit was also given to her by Bhunivelze, as Liberator attire.

-VersusXIII's previous trailers have displayed the following quotes:

" "The true figure is still hidden in the sleep." + "The figure that still lies asleep in the fantasy."

-So maybe this new world mentioned in LR will be the base of the world we see in Versus, and maybe the figure in the sleep is still Bhuniveilze.

Personally I would hate for this to happen and its why I would like Versus to be renamed, as it would destroy the chances of this happening. I can imagine something ridiculous like, that thing in the sky that Noctis and Stella can see/talk to, will end up being Lightning or something ridiculous like that.

The horror!

Lightning in Versus XIII would be the ultimate fuck-you. The sum of all Square Enix's insanity come home to roost. I almost want it to happen for the pure "holy fuck no" nature of it and the tidal wave of piss that would swallow SE whole as a result.
