Lightning Returns Gamescom trailer

Personally, when I say LR barely resembles a FF game, that's not an insult. It's a wacky, almost surreal spin-off. It has a pretty short development time behind it, yet it's also highly experimental. It's the third part of a particular series, yet it seems totally disconnected from everything in terms of feel, story, and gameplay. It seems so dark and serious in some ways, but it's also goofy to the core, and has an unusual willingness to pander.

I'm honestly excited to try it out. The trailer was actually pretty good, as well.

This i can agree with an almost perfect statement on how it could be considered not be a FF game

Yeah I was thinking this, too. Just seems odd and it really kind of takes you out of it. Like really, who wears the same clothes every day?

Even more hype! Braver Limited Break @0:30 :D

Actually it seems for every outfit there could be a different battle style. Interesting.

Also, more details in the press release:

“The Wildlands…the last remaining wilderness in a dying world. Canopus Farms is one of the small settlements that dot the Wildlands. The gysahl greens that are grown here are renowned as a local delicacy!

The Wildlands is the fourth continent of Nova Chrysalia, and contains the remnants of the sprawling natural wilderness that once existed on Gran Pulse. Beasts run free here, and the people live a hardy life of self-sufficiency. But behind the lush and bountiful facade seethes Chaos that is especially powerful and dangerous. The Wildlands station is carved into the very face of a mountain. You can look out over sprawling green vistas from the station platform, making it hard to believe that you are still in a world on the brink of destruction.

The Wildlands are covered with swathes of forest like this. You can easily get lost if you don’t check your map when traversing this region.

After being pulled into the expanding vortex of Chaos, Mog wandered the Void Beyond for an age. However, he found out that his moogle comrades had also wound up there, and together they built the Moogle Village; with Mog becoming the headman.
Mog has long been wracked with guilt over his failure to protect Serah. The Moogle Village can be found in the depths of the Wildland’s forests. Mog is finally reunited with Lightning, but he has deep regrets about failing to protect Serah and
tries to escape. However, Lightning speaks to him with words of kindness. Lightning sees Mog unchanged over several hundred years and cannot help but smile.

Sazh currently lives with his son Dajh, in a house converted from the ruins of a crashed airship.
He has been tormented for many hundreds of years by his failure to save his son, who fell into a deep slumber when the world began to collapse, and has not awakened since. Sazh has never give up on the quest to awaken his sleeping son.
However, being unable to save him has cast a dark shadow over his heart… It seems that Dajh cannot awaken because his soul is in another place. Was it Lumina who hid the soul? When he fought together with Lightning, Sazh always cheered everybody up with his easy-going outlook, but now his manner is hard and his expression has become ashen.

A blue chocobo chick appears before Lightning. Follow the chocobo to search for clues that might save Dajh! In the Wildlands, there exists a mysterious white chocobo known as the “angel of Valhalla.” Although saved from certain death, the white chocobo does not appear to want to eat… For some reason it will only respond to Lightning, and so she agrees to look after it and nurse it back to health. Lightning saves this magnificent creature when it is attacked by a monster, an act that leads to further intriguing developments…

Gather information from among the villagers and acquire nutritious items such as gysahl greens to feed the chocobo. If the recovery goes according to plan, then the day it spreads it’s wings once more can’t be far off.

Army of One, Lightning’s ultimate attack from the previous episodes returns for the final game, but this time it has evolved into an exceptionally speedy and dynamic technique. It consumes addition EP (Energy Points). Deal a barrage of lightning-fast slashes, while freely switching between the three costumes that you have equipped! Monsters are powerless before Lightning’s ferocious slashing attacks and unable to defend themselves!

The Heartstealer outfit — a light and agile costume well suited to mobile attacks and evasion. Combine this garb with abilities involving movement for rapid and exciting action! Attacking motions will change depending on the weapon used. Armed with a rapier, Lightning attacks like a fast-moving fencer, with powerful thrusting strikes.”

The gameplay looks kinda interesting? I'm kinda interested in it, which surprises me.

On the other hand the dialogue is so bad, all of it. I don't think i could listen to this for a whole game.

I swear, you guys must have broken some sort of record for consecutive false equivalencies when it comes to defending SE's laziness in developing LR.
And you guys are trying way too hard hating on this game. It is lazy of Square Enix not to redesign Sahz (though, given that they've redesigned Snow might mean there's some stupid "story" reason why they haven't done it to other characters), but that really has no considerable effect on the quality of the game. If this was Atlus developing the exact same game but called it Shin Megami Tensei: Doomsday and had a different protagonist, I'm almost 100% certain this game wouldn't be crapped on nearly as much as it is now. Yeah, we get it, you didn't want another FFXIII game, but apart from some rough edges due to short dev time and Toriyama writing the story, this game seems to be shaping up quite well. I'm pretty certain this will be a really enjoyable game to play if you don't put too much emphasis on bitching about Toriyama's writing (and who knows, maybe it will have some nice twists like Serah's death and generally have stuff that is of the quality of Noel in XIII-2).

Btw, does that "who will you save, who will you sacrifice?" mean we get to decide if we kill people like Snow or not and that it would have effect on the outcome of the story?

Well I'm excited for it. Not counting on too much story wise from Toriyama but it still looks like it will be really fun to play.

But I guess I'm in the minority as someone who enjoyed the XIII series as a whole. Here's hoping they can at least give it some semblance of proper closure.

square needs to hire a better voice director, lightning's VA was great in kid icarus as paluetena, but here as lightning, the voice fits but it just seems like one note every scene, doesnt help that the dialogue could be much better aswell

Yeah, I was wondering too what that means. I think it's just a way to underline the freedom in choosing who you will save (/completed quests) and who you will leave alone (/unfinished quests). Having limited time to save the world, you have to choose who to save (/save) and who to forget about (/sacrifice).

Did you notice Fang plays along Lightning? This is sort of news even if rather small because it'll be AI controlled, but still makes up for the lack of a proper party.

Most of the times the voices you hear in these trailers are not taken from the game but dubbed over it. XIII and XIII-2's eng VA wasn't bad at all, quite good for the standards of jRPGs acting. What was wrong is balacing of audio vs music... there's a particular scene in XIII-2 where Caius and Serah face each other and the music is so loud you barely hear the characters. Now that's bad.

edit.

speaking of which: japanese trailer for LR just published: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAaJmhlLboI

Most of the CGI seen till now is coming straight from the opening hour, I wonder how massive and long it's going to be considering every footage is always new and taking place at different moments (the tower clock, the party, the battle with snow). Though I'm sure the game will not have more than an opening, mid and ending CGI. The story is shaping out to be very nostalgic and sad which I like.

edit.

is there a different demo in the showfloor this time?

I really enjoyed seeing that yellow outfit Lightning wore during a small part of the video. It really reminded me of some of Yoshitaka Amano's designs.

I never had too much of a problem with XIII and XIII-2 so I'm looking forward to this game. At first I was kind of turned off from it's seeming lack of polish, but the more they show, the better it seems to look. I'm also really interested in trying that battle system.

Also.

Blasted fuck-ball!

Ha ha.

Looks like it might be an enjoyable game, but I feel it lacks the FF charm. On a side note, it is concerning we still have no mention if ffx hd

We know FFX | X-2 is at Gamescom. We'll definitely get some new information, might just be that they are giving Lightning Returns all the attention today.

Not gunna lie, but that trailer was actually decent looking. Shaping up to be the best FF XIII; now if only the story holds up...

Me: Am I actually the only one???
3vk1kp
Nope. It's just that for every Lightning Returns thread (or FF thread in general), a very vocal portion of GAF has to chime in how horrible Lightning is and contribute nothing else. Because they're edgy like that.

So, educate the ignorant....

It looked like a world more FFXII like. IE, more open. If it's anything like FFXII (in world setting...almost like a single player MMO imo), I'll be all over this game.

Open world, real-time clock, and a ticking time limit to the end of the world. The battle system is a modified version of FFXIII's ATB2 meant to work with Lightning as the only party member.

FFXIII turned me off the universe hard enough that I have no real interest in this game, but they're definitely taking a few risks, so that's worth something.

How many people bashing XIII-2 played it all the way through I wonder? LIke X-2 its a superficially campy and lightweight story with some unexpectedly dark moments.

I honestly thought it showed a lot of improvement over XIII, even though I thought the difficulty reduction over XIII's combat went a step too fare, on the whole I found it consistently engaging to play.

I really don't understand why its so maligned (apart from those people specifically on an anti-Toriyama trip) when its a far from terrible game.

Still quite looking forward to XIII-III myself. If its at least as good as its predecessor, I'll be happy with my purchase.

not to highjack the thread, but this is what ive been waiting for all day...

ill watch the trailer once i get home, was planning to preorder this one of these days anyway. the cloud costume comes with the Limited edition right? yeah, im a sucker for things like that

The new trailer almost makes LR seem decent. Watching the Japanese version just reminds me how much Ali Hillis doesn't fit Lightning...

Ah yes, these threads always go the same way. Even now...

Anyway, good trailer however I do agree with some others comments about spoilers, seems SE has a habit of making trailers that have spoilers in them but oh well.

Fang and Light fighting side by side is awesome. Wonder if anyone else will join in the fight besides Fang.

Moogle village is cool. Also lol @ the Chocobo bit with Sazh.

I'm much more excited for this game than when it was first revealed (reveal trailer was just absolutely horrible) but I wonder if we'll get a demo for this like with XIII-2. Kinda hope we do but not counting on it.

You guys have been saying this since last year and it hasn't changed. Development is wrapping up now. They don't have time to "fix" it. This game isn't ready for release. It's being rushed and pushed by the Kitase/Toriyama tag team.

Saying that the framerate hasn't changed at all since the first trailer is a complete lie.

There's nothing to hate on this trailer, really. Looks really good.

Uh... Lightning's VA seems kinda... weird. There's that. Also, is that a Locke outfit?

Have they explained the time limit thing yet? You start with 7 days left to save the world and can extend that to up to 13 days. Right, I get that. But that means you can keep extending it (13 is the maximum number of days you can have left, but as it lowers you can keep extending it to 13)? Or once you hit 13 days you just stop getting Eradia/you lose the ability to give Eradia to Hope?

If it's the first (which makes more sense) there's nothing really to worry about. You'll never run out of time unless you want.

So is this suppose to be a 3rd person action game with DMC/GoW style combat?
It's not that level of action and combos-type combat. Still tied to a resource bar (time as a resource, technically) with 4 moves per 'style', and 3 styles for use in battle.
