Lightning Returns Gamescom trailer

Does anyone know if there's any new DEMO playable on the showfloor or behind the curtains with the press? I'm sure I heard something about this.

It's the same demo from E3.

I get the feeling they'll eventually release that demo on PSN too someday.

Anyway I'm dying to play the game and if I continue like this I'll know everything about the game before even playing, so soon will be time for a media black out on this. Oh yeah :P

I hope so. They did it for XIII-2, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Edit: lol Stuart.

Or any other cartoon we have watched in out lives.

But NO cartoon character has existed for hundreds of years in the same clothes. Even if they show them in a skit that takes place in a different setting, they ARE dressed appropriate to that setting(Peter Griffin as a caveman, Homer Simpson as Hamlet's Father or Tom and Jerry dressed like musketeers).

When one of the main character's biggest features in THIS game is a wide assortment of costumes, and a bumpkin like Snow gets a costume change, it makes you wonder why the others aren't treated as kindly. I mean, damn, would it have been THAT hard?

I think ive heard it takes significant resources to get these demos together so it wouldnt make sense to create a new one after E3.

Game just steadily keeps looking better and better every time they show it. Can't wait to play this. The wildlands look like a fun area to run around in. I loved the Fang guest battle bits. That's going to make a lot of people happy. Looks like there's a chocobo raising sidequest too. And I thought the rapier battle style was neat.

I hadn't seen anyone post these either, in case anyone wants to see them. Lots of city areas to explore from the looks of it.

I can't believe anyone is not hyped for this.
Looks like the best parts of FFXIII & FFXIII-2 combined.

With XIV turning as out good as it has, I think I'm content with the delay this game got now. As for the trailer, I don't think it was better then the E3 trailer.

Stop basing it off these threads, there's plenty of people hyped for it. Just take it as anyone who has any genuine interest in the game know to avoid these threads as Lightnings name has become a beacon of some sort.

E3's trailer still the best probably for cutting and editing. Or... maybe I just wanted to say it's better because of Mizuta-san :D

But you love XIII. Don't turn your back on Goddess Lightning now.

I do man, relax. I keep saying in every topic is on my top 3 FFs together with VII and XII :P
LR calls back for different feelings though, I think they're really playing alot with my nostalgic side of love for the series. Throws me back to 7-8-9's days somehow. Don't ask me why, it just does. I'm back in '90.

Not gonna lie, it looks really appealing visually. If I had no prior experience with FFXIII and the huge disappointment stain it left on SE this entire damn gen, I'd be super excited for this. Still, I'm glad this is finally gonna be released and over with so SE can finally move on.

Also, that little throwback dialogue-box prompting you about the buster sword at the very end was just freaking shameless.

Well, even though the graphics look pretty shit, Square Enix still knows its way around Art Direction.

HD Japanese games industry in a nutshell. There's pretty much nobody else at this point, bit sad. I mean at best they could give up the technical side and go for extreme art direction, but they would get lambasted for that because of a 16 year old reputation that sort of holds them in a tough spot as they get judged by it time and time again.

On a side note, I always wonder if JP gamers even give a shit about frame rate. Is most of the traction on the subject thanks to the PC master race?

Shame the event has only has the E3 demo again. I would like to see a new video showing more gameplay and the HUD which seem to be always missing from the trailers.

As rushed as this is, the game doesn't look like shit in any way graphically. It's still one of the better looking JRPGs on PS360, rough edges and all. Stop exaggerating. there's more to quality than either shit or greatest ever.

It's hard to dwell on characters wearing the same clothes 500 years in the future but all RPGs have characters wearing the same clothes for entire 60 hour quests. Also, didn't SE sat that even though 500 years have passed, most people don't realize that since time has 'stopped'.

Is it just me or whenever Lightning speaks it reminds me of Christian Bale trying to use his Batman voice? It really sounds like she tried to make each line gruff, but I dunno, just doesn't seem right. It worked for Femshep in Mass Effect (it probably has a lot to do with the script too) but it just seems off putting here. On the other hand, I'll laugh my ass off if they have Caius doing his best Bane impression.

That's a lame justification for why every character besides Snow look the same.

I wasn't gonna watch the trailer due to spoilers but I did. Ugh.

But otherwise looks quite a bit better than before IMO. The environments showed looked really nice. I hope they haven't spoiled most of them already.

XIII era people not only had low IQ's but also don't need to take showers. And their clothes clean themselves so they never have to be changed.

Not made up at all.

I made it up

They uploaded a bunch of new screenshots (although they look more like bullshots, sadly) on Facebook.

Graphical quality of the screenshots varies from screenshot to screenshot. Some, like that one, look passable. Others:

So I don't know. Maybe Square Enix just majorly sucks at taking screenshots of their own games.

That's not a screenshot. That's concept art.

Also that's not one of the "screenshots" in the article.

Really bro? Really? Are you seriously comparing 500 years to 60 hours? Are you seriously comparing one game not changing attire to multiple games not changing attire?

Okay. Just wanted to make sure we are on the same page.

Yeah. Like execution of concepts and idea's.
Sure, and for execution of those concepts and ideas, there are more to them than something being either the shittiest idea/concept ever or the best idea/concept ever.

Sure, XIII-2 didn't execute things perfectly, but especially on an idea level it was leaps and bounds beyond XIII. Execution wise it did improve over many aspects of XIII while, sure, taking a couple of steps back with others.

Having more freedom to explore those slightly more complex maps (and going back & forth between them as you wanted) in comparison to running through the pipes that XIII mostly had IS an improvement over XIII. It's still no Skyrim, but not everything has to be and, hey, improvement is improvement however small. Leaping in time and experiencing alternative timelines felt like Chrono Trigger, even if the writing let down a lot of it. And while there were some pointless side-quests, there were also some more interesting ones that required a bit more thought (like the whole usage of the weather machine and using that to solve a small puzzle to finish a side quest).

The Pokemon aspect was also very well done if you are open to those kinds of things (I had more fun with XIII-2's Pokeymans than I've ever had with the real Pokeymans, fusing them/their abilities together and all), even if you feel like complaining about the lack of controllable story-characters. And while XIII-2's writing can not be said to be much good, it did present a more interesting villain than anyone ended up being in XIII (though they had potential, they were left severely underdeveloped) and Noel is the best character in the XIII universe, + I think killing the main character and unleasing chaos on to the world in the meantime was a ballsy end twist for the game that not that many games seem willing to pull off.

It might've been easier to overpower yourself, but that is a somewhat of a result of the more open nature of the whole game (i.e. they couldn't make all timelines challenging no matter when you visited them) and its character development system. They did make some undeniable improvements over XIII with the combat system (selectable party leader, no death if one of the main characters dies, wounding is a neat feature), even if overpowering was a bit too easy.

But then again, FF games have ALWAYS been easily exploitable (grind even for a bit and the Attack command is all you need for the rest of the game), so making XIII-2 seem like the shittiest game ever because of some lack of difficulty (when it does kind of give you tools to control the difficulty level yourself, to a degree, by letting you level up/assign points or not level up/assign points as you want and you could easily skip battles by not confronting enemies) seems like hypocricy when ye olde FFs were no better in that regards.

I personally don't have any qualms about XIII-2's difficulty level because I kind of controlled my character development and often held on to the CP I had earned. I didn't appoint every point I had straight away when I got enough for the next node in the Crystarium, so I had a lot of fun fights against enemies that easily kicked my ass if I wasn't careful. This does require some discipline of the player and maybe some see it as gimping your characters, but I had a lot of fun with it that way. Sure, at some point I got to a point that visiting certain timelines meant confronting much lower level enemies and they were a cakewalk to beat, but that kind of thing happens in most RPGs, and whenever I advanced in story I often had to fight enemies that were beyond my level. I even got stuck on the last boss for forever.

The only thing that is purely a downgrade are the visuals, but knowing the limitations of the Crystal Tools & the short development time, I can appreciate them still trying to offer something with a bit more freedom and less straight lines (although, yes, Skyrim it was still not).

I'm surprised that people look back and say they hated the core battle system from XIII in the first place. I thought it was really good. It was the rest of the game that fell short.

True story i fully clocked the whole game with Autobattle including the last 3 boss stages. The strategy only comes from Paradigm shifts.

Really long thing

Execution of gameplay mechanics is much improved. However overall storytelling and well written characters and the setting following pre-set rules(that are broken with little consequence) takes a nosedive each time.

There is no defending that. Or I'm living in a paradox. Or Etro did it.

I look at all these woods and forests and things to discover.. and remember it's timed.

No thanks. I like taking my time. :/
I'll just view a let's play of it instead to get closure.

Snow looks like an 80's musician. Fits right in with Caius, who looked like a Glam Rock star.

We'll see how it goes with the time limit. I vaguely remember them saying something about spending GP to freeze time in an area. I never heard them explain it in detail yet, so it's not clear what they mean.

And though they haven't said anything about cheats, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see new game + have a lot of time manipulation powers like XIII-2 did.

The battle system looks like something you couldn't enjoy in a let's play. With blocks, dodges and hard mode, looks pretty fun to really get in there and battle it out.

Seriously? Is all you do whine about this game? I've been lurking for a long time now and you're vehemently against this game. Guess what, so am I for the most part, and so are Kagari and other members. I don't see them making a concerted effort to bash the game like you do...they usually just let it go or give noncommittal remarks.

I get this is a public forum and all...but there are threads for different games and different interests. If you dislike this game so much just don't pay a lot of attention to it. It's as if you're only focusing on the negatives and not the positives about this game.

I probably won't be buying this game as it's a cluster of plot twists and plot holes that don't make sense, but I have to applaud SE for making this much progress in such a short development time. Sort of promising that they're doing this on short resources.

square needs to hire a better voice director, lightning's VA was great in kid icarus as paluetena, but here as lightning, the voice fits but it just seems like one note every scene, doesnt help that the dialogue could be much better aswell

The VO director is Jack Fletcher, who's been doing their stuff since FFX as far as I know. FFX has good voice acting in my opinion (great, considering the circumstances) and Ali Hillis is a good actress. She's excellent as Liara in Mass Effect; I regularly forget it's even her. You can only work with what you have though, which is not much at all in this case.

LTTP here, but is this series any good? I have never played a FF game, so I have no idea what it's about or anything. Is the story good? Gameplay? Would I have to play XIII and XIII-2 to play this one?

Kitase: No.

They have to say that to encourage more sales. And I'm sure they put in some effort to make it a little accommodating to new players.

But yeah, it's clear that if you play the first two games you'll have a MUCH better idea of what's going on. You can jump right in without playing the others, but you'll basically just know that she's trying to save the world, and that's all you're going to understand. All the character reunions, the mythology, going to sail safely over your head.

My advice is to pick up the first one if you're interested because it's super cheap. If you like it, pick up the 2nd one, as it's also super cheap. I loved both games.

If you just want the new one though, you can probably get by just reading the stories on wikipedia, and watching a few cutscenes on youtube.

Jesus Christ you're obnoxious. Why are you in these threads? You're always the person giving LR the most hate and taking it off-topic. You should be banned from these threads, you contribute nothing at all.

On topic:

The more of LR I see the more interested I am. I won't be buying it day one but I'll more than likely pick it up when it's much cheaper.
