Lily Bergamo was turned into Let It Die

Well the fact that the last two Suda x Kozaki games mega bombed might have something to do with it. Really can't blame gungho for wanting a change in direction.

It's fairly obvious which side of 'x' is responsible for the bombas...

Now seriously

If you're talking about Liberation Maiden Sin, the VN is panned for its shitty story, which guess what, suda51 had some hand into the concept (he didn't write it)... most VNs don't sell more than a few thousands anyway.

If you're talking about that Short Peace hybrid disc game, it's a crappy sidescroller. Again the story is grasshopper shit, they didn't make the game though. IIRC the whole short peace thing was bomb anyway (bluray sales).

As for Kozaki's art you get what you ask for, the man has a very diverse output actually, from things like donyatsu to Fire Emblem, from suppressed modern looking designs to wild and messy like the stuff he's done for suda51...

Considering Nintendo went after him for FE, specifically stating his popularity as a reason, this couldn't be any more off the mark.

I think they just couldn't make the game they wanted, Lily Bergamo concepts were actually first teased before Gungho buyout iirc. If you want to blame anyone, Gungho pushing for some f2p shit is probably more reasonable considering that they're an online company and after looking how things like Killer is Dead is megabombing every where they made the move. I doubt this game has anything to do with Lily Bergamo unlike what they say (seriously wtf!!!), they just canned it but have some obligations to Sony and they're just phoning this one in instead! </lots of speculation from everyone>

Sure, only 5 people would've bought Lily Bergamo, but Suda, Grasshopper, you just lost a customer.

At least Lily Bergamo would sell, even if the audience was very small. That's a lot better than a FTP game without players, let alone whales.

Let It Die looks _awful_ (and I'm saying that as someone who has seen both the Lily Bergamo and the LID trailer for the first time today).

I was really looking forward to learning more about Lily Bergamo so bummed about that aspect. But we've seen so little about Let It Die aside from it's obviously violent (I'm cool with that) I won't write it off.

Xenoblade Chronicles X will make it all worth while

Believe

I'm not a fan of Japanese RPG's (or RPG's in general), not everyone grew up with SNES and shitty jrpg's. In my youth when it came to Japanese games it was Beat'em ups, Sidescrolling action that sorta stuff. Plus Xenoblade Chronicle X like all the anime tripe of the last few years. EPIC, MECHAS, DRAMA... When I read or watch Japanese manga or animation, it'll be something be old school 60s to 70s stuff like Eightman/Tabor or Space Adventure Cobra or 80s/90s stuff that made japanese animation boom in the first place in the west, like the ones directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

Between Devi's Third looking like tripe and Lily Bergamo being canned in favor of Let It Die, E3 2014 turned from great to poop.

That really really blows a gargantuan amount of dicks. I know there wasn't a lot to go on, but Lily Bergamo looked like something special based on its trailer. The same can't be said for what has replaced it.

I guess it's normal that games in development get canned and others get made BUT saying that Lily Bergamo morphed into Let It Die seems deflective.
Those games look nothing alike. Not the artstyle, not the atmosphere.
Lily Bergamo looked like a (not cliche/boring) anime artstyle action game, whereas Let It Die looks like a japanese Manhunt. How could those be "essentially the same game" ?

This statement seems really weird.

I need some context for those screens. Looks ultra-generic, way less inspired than Manhunt itself.

When you say he had nothing do to with it, do you mean he's not working on it at all and his only link to the game is marketing?

I find that hard to believe considering how mediocre it looks. It has all the hallmarks of a Suda51 game.

Style over substance, average gameplay, stupid story/characters.

You can troll better than that.

Once again, he's not even directing it. More creative producer crap. Getting really tired of Suda's antics, and that's coming from a huge fan of his. Not really enthused for this game. Looks like their most jank project in years, and pretty boring at that. Free to play just makes it worse. Lily Bergamo looked super cool too; no idea how it turned into this.

Agreed on all points.

From a good looking colorful game to a dark and violent generic looking game, awful. I'm not sure I will even notice this game now with the onslaught of gritty looking games next year. Lily Bergamo at least had a chance simply because of the fact that it had a distinctive art style.

Wait, it's also f2p?

Past interviews were already pointing in the direction of Lily Bergamo being an online-focused action game with RPG mechanics. Free2play even made sense given GungHo's core business. I'm also not sure why the visual style has changed so much, but I do think that the gameplay concept stayed the same.

Lol

How can you even be mad. None of you. Not a single person in this thread knew what Lily Bergamo even was beyond some super vague teaser from last year. Give me a break

Oh wow. I must have missed those.
I seriously was thinking Lily Bergamo was a singleplayer game.

Things make a little bit more sense now.

Between Lily Bergamo and Xenoblade Chronicle X, neither is looking anything like Space Adventure Cobra. Of course, I wouldn't call either game tripe but then...the idea of giant robots and RPGs aren't a turn off to me, so maybe it's just me. -_-

It always had online elements but they talked a lot about the story of the game, so I'm thinking that they just chucked the story in favor of going full online with this game.

There was even talk of a smartphone app for levelling up your character.

Anyway, really, when I was watching the Let It Die trailer yesterday, the thought immediately popped up in my head: "This must be some small online RPG testing ground game of which they got the idea during Lily Bergamo's development."

Funny how close to the truth I got.

WTF

I am mad. I don't think E3 news has left me so mad in a long time.

I hated everything about Let It Die's direction. This is a fucking shame.

LOL. No, give me a break. We went from what was described as an action RPG title with colorful anime style graphics and a female main character to an overly violent, "gritty", gray action game with the main character being a faceless cipher because the main character "is the player". I'm not saying Lily Bergamo would've been a great game. But what we DO know is that they literally took something that looked interesting, killed it, and turned it's corpse into a mainstream title. And not even your typical dudebro-y AAA mainstream title. A fucking free to play game. If it had downgraded from PS4 to iOS/Android it would literally be a microcosm of what's been happening to the gaming industry for the past four or five years. :P

I just saw this thread. I am sad now :(

Was looking forward to see more of the Suda title, and was surprised to see another new one from him. This one looks........ strange and weird. Didn't like it one bit =/

But even the interviews and GungHo itself were already implying this. I don't think it was a shocking surprise at all.

And FWIW, I personally kinda dig the dark Manhunt-style a bit more than the cel-shading, in the sense that we've already got that kind of look and style with the previous NMH/LC/KiD games.

Just based on the artstyle alone, they made an utterly terrible decision. Going from Kozaki Yuusuke to anything else is guaranteed to be a downgrade.

Possibly the worst art direction change since FUSE. Really disappointing, I was looking forward to Lily Bergamo even just off the back of a super vague trailer because of the aesthetic style.

What I remember reading implied online that they hadn't quite figured out, but not F2P.

In addition to FFXV being a no-show, this is pretty much the most disappointing news from E3. Lily Bergamo looked so good, why would they fuck it up with this kind of shit?

Suda I respect you and can get over the fact that your games aren't as great as they once were since you're not in the director chair full time.

But fuck this decision. I am mad.

Either way the end result is the same. A Suda game, all style and no substance. Also sales poison.

This goes to show why publishers/developers don't like to show early products and concepts. Things change and the public reacts to concepts with no basis of how they would play out.

I hope you all learned your lesson.

Well, shoot. I was really looking forward to that. It seemed to be right up my alley, which this Let It Die thing seems to be diametrically opposed to. I'm so depressed I think I'm gonna go ly dow.

I'm very bummed that Lily Bergamo was turned into Let It Die, and while what I've seen of Let It Die I found to look terrible, I'll still wait for the jury on that one.
I still wish Suda would make another game using the artstyle, mechanics, and the characters that have been developed for Lily Bergamo.
The weird thing is, we literally only had a short concept trailer and a few artworks and I'm wishing for this to come back to life. That's very irrational but knowing Suda's games, the way I envisioned how this game would have been is too awesome.

I agree with Pyccko, I think we need to ly dow.

On one hand, I always thought Lily would have sales even below the traditional niche Japanese games. On the other, if I were to choose, I much preferred it than this 'Let it die'

Welp. We hardly ever saw anything about Lily Bergamo but I think the character and artstyle was way more compelling. Can't say I really care about Let it Die at all from what we've seen.
