No, I don't think the Academy Awards are the only barometer for what good films are, but among their nominations there are always good and great films that fit their usual criteria and preference.

This year, even most of the BP noms are mediocre at best.

But thank you for the completely unnecessary snarky comment.
Did you account for them expanding to 10 nominations, which leads to them picking even shittier choices than they would've?

I don't think Cars 2 not getting nominated is a "Snub", any more than Gary Oldman not getting nominated for The Fifth Element.

Speaking more towards the fact that Cars 2 has been getting some awards recognition this season. I was worried the Oscar's would follow suit. Glad they didn't. I'm sure some of the folks at Disney expected they would.

God no. I don't fucking understand that RT score. All of Yates' HP movies are woefully mediocre as far as I'm concerned. This is one "snub" I can get behind.

Sorry Jett, but your opinion's void because it's popular. Didn't you get the memo?

Also, to the person below me..fuck. I forgot about Fassbender =(. Thought he was a shoe in as well.

Prost fan?

No doubt the movie was one-sided but it was still a great watch and easily one of the best documentaries of the year.
Actually was a Senna fan during that era of F1, but as fond as I was of him ( and still am); the eulogising is all too much and it's far too evident in the film. I won't deny the production values though, but that doesn't save it for me.

Yeah the last Potter was incredibly mediocre. Nothing in it whatsoever to separate it from any other CGI action adventure melee. THe 2nd to last Potter was at least a bit different, successful or not, so I don't know why the last one got all the goodwill (actually I know - it's because it's the last one).

The thing about RT is that anything above 60% is considered a fresh score. So, 96% of critics could give Harry Potter a 3/5 and it would get that score.

Reznor and Ross not getting a nomination feels good. Karma agrees that they shouldn't have robbed Hans last year.

Did you account for them expanding to 10 nominations, which leads to them picking even shittier choices than they would've?

They've been picking 10 nominations since 2009. So, yeah.

The only bad film among the 2010 noms was The Kids Are All Right.

Michael Fassbender got royally screwed.

Not too many surprises, other than that. I thought he was a shoe-in for a nomination.

Must be jealousy at his 'package'

But seriously 'Shame' was never going to be a film the academy would get behind.

Despite it being absolutely fantastic.

I consider Parts 1 and 2 to be one film. Wasn't that the intention?

Together I consider them to be a pretty great package..but I'm by no means over the moon about them either. I just would have liked to see the last one get some high profile Noms as a recognition to the series overall, which I mostly enjoyed from start to finish.

Also, yah. I saw the Drive snub coming =(.

But they didn't. Its average score was an 8.4..That's ridiculously high. Either way, critical reception isn't the be all end all. The snub's just disappointing for me on a personal level.

No Fast Five V. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy V. Rango showdown for Best Picture?

The Oscars continue to be far more boring than my imagination.

Guys, I really liked Drive and even I knew there was no way in hell it was going to get any serious recognition.

No Fast Five V. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy V. Rango showdown for Best Picture?

The Oscars continue to be far more boring than my imagination.

Fast Five is, assuredly, better than at least a third of their nominees for Best Picture.

Vin Diesel was right.

so, money ball got two acting nominations... does everyone here agree with that?

i thought the performances, like the film itself, were quite unremarkable.

a nomination for his role in tree of life would've made more sense to me.

I enjoyed the film, but I can't really think of anything memorable about it.

Happy to see Hugo get a ton of noms in other areas. Really hoping Scorsese can bring it home in directing.

They've been picking 10 nominations since 2009. So, yeah.

The only bad film among the 2010 noms was The Kids Are All Right.

I liked that movie.

Definitely liked it more than 127 Hours and The Fighter.

I hate that they went to 10 noms, as well.

The 2010 (2009 Films) Nominees included:
The Blind Side
Avatar
Disctrict 9

Just sayin'.

The Help has more nominations than Drive.

I can't believe how much obvious Oscar bait got nominated. Poor Drive. You won an award in my heart though Drive.

Someone mentioned it in the Tangled thread, but it's kind of a shame that Tangled didn't get released in 2011 instead of 2010.

I think it would have easily won the Oscar this year, whereas it wasn't even nominated last year (which was total bullshit, by the way).

Actor in a Leading Role

Demián Bichir in "A Better Life"
George Clooney in "The Descendants"
Jean Dujardin in "The Artist"
Gary Oldman in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"
Brad Pitt in "Moneyball"
- I wouldn't mind either Gary Oldman or Jean Dujardin winning though as both were equally fantastic to Pitt. But Billy Beane has to win something somehow.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Kenneth Branagh in "My Week with Marilyn"
Jonah Hill in "Moneyball"
Nick Nolte in "Warrior"
Christopher Plummer in "Beginners"
Max von Sydow in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"
- I felt Albert Brooks (Drive) and Uggie the Dog (The Artist) were both snubbed, those two were the only ones I thought were deserving. So I'll just continue my Moneyball run instead.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Bérénice Bejo in "The Artist"
Jessica Chastain in "The Help"
Melissa McCarthy in "Bridesmaids"
Janet McTeer in "Albert Nobbs"
Octavia Spencer in "The Help"

Animated Feature Film

"A Cat in Paris" Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli
"Chico & Rita" Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal
"Kung Fu Panda 2" Jennifer Yuh Nelson
"Puss in Boots" Chris Miller
"Rango" Gore Verbinski
- Rango was too good, no others can compare for the year really.

Art Direction

"The Artist"
Production Design: Laurence Bennett; Set Decoration: Robert Gould

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2"
Production Design: Stuart Craig; Set Decoration: Stephenie McMillan
"Hugo"
Production Design: Dante Ferretti; Set Decoration: Francesca Lo Schiavo
"Midnight in Paris"
Production Design: Anne Seibel; Set Decoration: Hélène Dubreuil
"War Horse"
Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales

Cinematography

"The Artist" Guillaume Schiffman
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Jeff Cronenweth
"Hugo" Robert Richardson
"The Tree of Life" Emmanuel Lubezki
"War Horse" Janusz Kaminski

Costume Design

"Anonymous" Lisy Christl
"The Artist" Mark Bridges
"Hugo" Sandy Powell
"Jane Eyre" Michael O'Connor
"W.E." Arianne Phillips

Film Editing

"The Artist" Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius
"The Descendants" Kevin Tent
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
"Hugo" Thelma Schoonmaker
"Moneyball" Christopher Tellefsen
- This could go any way for Moneyball, TGWTDT and The Artist really.

Music (Original Score)

"The Adventures of Tintin" John Williams
"The Artist" Ludovic Bource
"Hugo" Howard Shore
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" Alberto Iglesias
"War Horse" John Williams
- While I loved the score for The Artist as a love letter to film, I was really engrossed and pulled in with TTSS' OST. Again it can go either way, I wouldn't mind if either won.

Music (Original Song)

"Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" Music and Lyric by Bret McKenzie
"Real in Rio" from "Rio" Music by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown Lyric by Siedah Garrett
- I haven't heard either (I missed out on the Muppets :'( ), but I like Muppets so Muppet vote.

Best Picture

"The Artist" Thomas Langmann, Producer
"The Descendants" Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, Producers
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" Scott Rudin, Producer
"The Help" Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, Producers
"Hugo" Graham King and Martin Scorsese, Producers
"Midnight in Paris" Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, Producers
"Moneyball" Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, Producers
"The Tree of Life" Nominees to be determined
"War Horse" Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, Producers
- Billy Beane argument again, but I could see The Artist taking this. I think TTSS should have gotten a nomination at the very least.

Sound Editing

"Drive" Lon Bender and Victor Ray Ennis
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Ren Klyce
"Hugo" Philip Stockton and Eugene Gearty
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl
"War Horse" Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom
- Drive easily for Sound Editing.

"The Ides of March" Screenplay by George Clooney & Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon
"Moneyball" Screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin Story by Stan Chervin
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" Screenplay by Bridget O'Connor & Peter Straughan
- I could also give this to TTSS.

"The Artist" Written by Michel Hazanavicius
"Bridesmaids" Written by Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wiig
"Margin Call" Written by J.C. Chandor
"Midnight in Paris" Written by Woody Allen
"A Separation" Written by Asghar Farhadi

Those are my picks, still not feeling the Albert Brooks and Uggie the Dog snubs, although if both were nominated they would be going head to head.

Of the nominated films (and admittedly, I've only seen a few of them), I'd give best picture to either The Three of Life or Hugo.

I'll be seeing The Artist this weekend, so perhaps it will change.

I liked that movie.

Definitely liked it more than 127 Hours and The Fighter.

I meant the 2011 (2010 films) list, actually.

Stephen Daldry directed the Reader (62% on RT) and 'Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close' which is at 48%

Both were nominated.

I think Mr. Stephen's accounts should be looked at or he has best friends in the academy

I'd be mad about the Albert Brooks snub if it wasn't already kind of telegraphed by the SAG nominations.

Drive just never had the money for an actual campaign, which sucks. Doesn't mean it's not still my favorite movie this year.

God no. I don't fucking understand that RT score. All of Yates' HP movies are woefully mediocre as far as I'm concerned. This is one "snub" I can get behind.

I wasn't expecting a best picture nomination or anything, but I thought the movie was fucking incredible and the soundtrack DEFINITELY deserved a nomination.

And a lot of people loved it as well as the critics. Go look at the top critic's category on the RT page. It speaks for itself. I know people love to Cuaron-wank but contrary to popular belief his was not the only good one. The movie had excellent cinematography, music, effects, acting, art direction-- the whole nine yards. The evidence is on the screen.

Again, wasn't expecting a BP nomination, but it deserved original score and sound editing for sure.

Here's the real question: Is it better than Speed Racer?

plz.

Speed Racer is movie of the year every year. Retroactively.

Well what can I say besides that I disagree with all of that. :P

I just don't see how anyone could watch the film and not be blown away by the cinematography and score at the very least. If you're not into the plot, whatever, each man for himself but literally all the technical aspects were mindblowing.

Not upset that it didn't get a BP nomination, wasn't expecting it or even dreaming of it because it's "just Harry Potter" but I was seriously hoping for music and cinematography.
